Subject: Bart, you're so wrong on cultural issues

Just have to say, I still read you most every day, trying to catch each new piece.
You're almost always right on with politics - that is, I agree with your politics most of the time.

But - on culture?  Man.  You infuriate me sometimes!
Saying this in all respect to your right to print your thoughts but - hey - why alienate people
with opinions about stuff that generally doesn't matter a whole hell of a lot?

You could reverse that - why get so upset about things that don't matter a hell of a lot?

I like Letterman - yes, still.  I've watched him since his first morning show.  And it's obvious he
doesn't like Bush so you really oughta be cheering him on.  He rags on Clinton, yeah, so what?
Blowjobs are a lot more fun to talk about, to JOKE about, on a Comedy show than dead and maimed soldiers.

My problem with Dave is his laziness.
Sure, I'll laugh at a a good blowjob joke, but it has to be funny. On New Year's Eve, when Dave hears
Dick Clark say, "The ball is going down," Dave thinks of Monica and even though it's six years past funny,
he connects the two and forces a joke the next night when there isn't really a joke to be made.

Frasier had a few rough years after their main creative director died in a plane on 9/11 and it took some time
to find their way again.  But they did.... and, yes they are leaving, but they are leaving on a high note.

Because Frasier was once TV's funniest show, I think his fall was greater than most.

Courtney Love is a lot more interesting than Shirley Manson - and her "Live Through This" is one of the best
CD's of all time.  Her bit on Letterman was funny.  Some of it bombed but for Courtney lovers - it was fun.
Garbage put out some good singles but they were good mainly due to Butch Vig's production.  Most any girl
could have sung those songs.

Now those are fighting words!
Actually, it's a good example of why we shouldn't be fighting about this.

If you like Courtney Love - more power to you.
That doesn't make me angry, that doesn't infuriate me.
It just means we have different tastes in a world with millions of options.

Tom Cruise is a fine actor.

Oh please...

Not as good as Tom Hanks, but still, he makes good movies and he's good in them.  Got to give him
props for "Born on the 4th of July" - oh, but, yeah, you didn't see it - one of the best anti war movies ever.
And it would probably never have been made without Cruise's involvement.  See Vanilla Sky?  Minority Report?
Good stuff.

I wear my decision to avoid as many Tom Cruise movies as possible as a badge of honor.
I think he's easily the most over-rated 1/2 talent in a town of talentless whores.
They say he's a hard worker - first guy on the set everyday and all that - but act?
If you enjoy his work, that's a bonus I'll never be able to appreciate.

Tiger Woods will go down in history as the Jackie Robinson of the golf world.

Ya think?

Jackie Robinson risked his life - literally - to break down racial barriers.
Tiger prefers to play things whitey's way, don't rock the boat, make that bank deposit,
and if women want to get thru the doors of Augusta well, frankly, Tiger has no opinion
on the subject,     ...but you see him as another Jackie Robinson?    Amazing...

I'm not a fan of golf but Woods has at least made it interesting - in that he's not just
another fat old white guy out there on the greens.

I guess he could be fat if he tried, but Tiger has no choice about being young and black.
I'm surprised you'd count his age and race as positives.

Brittney marrying and divorcing in Vegas?  Makes her human.  It doesn't make her a bad person.
It shows that she can make mistakes just like any of us.  It's endearing.

You might have misread that one. I said it was sad that she has no true friends, only highly paid flunkies
who would stand by idly and allow her to make a worldwide fool of herself by getting married when she
was too drunk to stand and had to be carried to the limo.  I feel sorry for her.  If I was Britney, I would
fire everyone who was with me on that Vegas trip as a signal to my new, more attentive staff.

I point all this out simply because politics is important - but people's taste in culture (music, movies, etc.)
cuts a lot deeper.  I think you are risking losing audience when you go off topic ranting about people
in the enterainment industry that a lot of people LIKE - otherwise they wouldn't be celebrities.
Maybe you should write a column on the Entertainment page with a different nic?

Or, ...we could all admit we have our favorites and that's OK - even if you say Tom Cruise can act.

Not that you need my advice - but in your anti Frasier rant you say you wish someone
would tell them when they're not being funny.  So, smile! I'm telling you!

Peace.

M23, it's with a smile that I say, "Thank you for the advice."
