Subject: Susan McDougal says hi

Bart!

I went to see Susan McDougal here in Houston this afternoon (April 12), thanks to the note you had on your webpage.
There were about 20 seats set up for her talk at Border Books, and at least 50 people showed up.  It was wonderful.
There was not a dry eye in the room.

After her talk, I asked her, "you know, this country gives such lip service to 'liberty and justice for all' ... what kind
of 'justice' do you think should be meted out to Kenneth Starr?"  She didn't hesitate and said, with a smile,
"He will get his 'justice.'" Which I took, not incorrectly, I believe, to mean, "at Judgement Day."
My instant reply was, "that's not good enough for me."

(side note)  I want some justice NOW.   The anger directed at Ken Starr in that room was palpable.

Instead, I asked her when the movie would be out. She said she has in fact been talking to a "Hollywood Producer"
but nothing firm has developed, yet.  (Susan Sarandon will HAVE to play Susan's part, we decided.)

I also, of course, told her that you said "Howdy" and she just lit up with a huge smile. I asked her to drop in
to the Forum now and then. She said that, "you know, I've been meaning to...but I AM going to be writing a
(regular?) column for Bartcop."  Her tour has been keeping her so busy, it's delayed her. Plus, the publisher
has extended the book tour by two additional months.   So she asked me to relay to you that she is so sorry,
but she has just been so busy with the book tour, and now the publisher has extended it by two more months
because it's been going so well, but she will get to it!

I decided not to even bring up Bush.

Other highlights:

No Freepers in the crowd!  Only simpaticos.  One woman, from Cuba, spoke up and said,
"I come from Cuba and I just cannot believe that something like this can happen in America!!"

Susan said that Bill Clinton called her about two weeks ago - the first time they have spoken in years
(since before he pardoned her) - and said he said he had just finished reading her book and
just said, "I'm so sorry, Susan ... (long pause) ... I just had no idea."   She teared up again, as did the crowd.

I had a friend of mine with me named Linda. We were on the front row and therefore got our books signed first,
and Linda was in tears when she told Susan that Susan was the strongest women she had ever heard known,
and she was such a hero to her. Susan said thank you so much and they hugged for about 10 seconds.
I couldn't help but tear up yet again.

Thanks for the note about her tour.  Keep it up.

Steve S
