Subject: Wankers?

Bart

I write as a regular reader and firm supporter, but I can't let you get away with this :

> 'Your wankers couldn't even handle Germany, so you begged us for help.
>  Ask your grandparents what language they'd be speaking if not for America's finest wankers. '

Well, I asked my grandparents, and they said 'bullshit, the US didn't beat the Nazis - that was the Russians.
Out of every ten German casualties (killed/wounded/captured/mia) in WW2, nine were on the Eastern front.
From the invasion of Russia until the end of the war, there were always more German troops fighting in the
East than the West.

First of all, this gives me an opportunity to remind readers I am not a historian.
I'm really old, and I've seen a lot with my own eyes, so if I report on something I saw
I can generally be trusted, ...mostly, ...sort of.  But real history should be left to scholars.

Having said that, I am going to argue with you - some...

It's my opinion that Russia didn't save England from German bombers.  As far as I know, there were no
Russians in England. Granted, they kept Hitler's right hand busy while his left hand screwed Western Europe,
but it was America that came to your aid, not Russia.

The Russians lost 13.7 million soldiers killed - all fighting on the Eastern Front - and 6 million civilians, against
total US military deaths of 292,000, which includes the war in the Pacific. Who does it look like did most of
the fighting now ? The Yanks just want the credit - like always.

ha ha
Yeah, we lost 300,000 men in WWII, so forgive us if we want a little credit.

'As for '...couldn't even handle Germany', Germany was the greatest military power in the world in 1939.
US forces had very mixed fortunes (i.e they generally lost) when they came up against the Germans, from
Kasserine Pass to Hurtgen Forest, unless the US had both substantial air and manpower superiority.

'Though the war would have lasted longer if there had been no 'second front', the Russians would have won
in the end, just on numbers and industrial production. In contrast, the UK and its former colonies wouldn't have
had a prayer of defeating the Germans on their own - we only made progress in the West because the Russians
were occupying the larger part of the Nazi forces in the East.

Not much to argue with there, except for America being "a former colony."
That's true on it's face, but you can't deny that we saved your bacon.

'And 'begging' ? It took Pearl Harbour to bring the US into the war, otherwise they'd have stayed out until it
was nearly all over, like they did in WW1, then joined in on the winning side to ensure their place at the armistice
talks and post-war carve-up. And did you know that the US didn't declare war on Germany in WW2 -
Germany declared war on the US ? So much for coming to save us.'

Pearl Harbor didn't pull us into the war in Europe.
In the old days, we attacked the attackers, (Novel idea, eh?) which was Japan.
We had a full war going in the Pacific starting Dec 7, 1941.
I'm unclear on the "declare war" thing.

Hard-hearted old buzzards, eh ?

I didn't say Great Britain wasn't grateful, I said that Monkey mailer was.

By all means, beat down real Monkey Mail with all the firepower at your disposal, but if you don't want to
offend your growing number of UK readers, I urge you to avoid 'well we saved your ass from the Nazis so
shut up' line in future. It really is the cheapest of  cheap shots.

regards
Phil

You're saying you could've defeated Hitler without us?
Fine, but why didn't you?
As I recall, your offense consisted of surviving the nightly bombings.

If it's a cheap shot to say "a former colony" saved you from Hitler,
I guess I will have to live with your disappointment.

Either way, we're on the same side now.
Any ideas how to stop the B.F.E.E. from taking over the world?
