The Golden Globes
Warning: Chances are I am going
to contradict myself many times in the following rant….
So what. I’m a girl. I am biologically
designed to do that.
I have a love/hate thing with the Golden Globe
awards. A very small group of Foreign Press folk
take it upon themselves to presume to know talent,
and quality in filmmaking and television.
These are journalists. Not Actors, not
Directors, not Screenwriters. Journalists.
(So very smug and arrogant… so republican.)
In such contrast to The Oscars by AMPAS (Academy
of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences)
or the Emmy awards, both of which are nominated
and voted on my peers in the industry.
Take this year’s current nominations:
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE - MUSICAL OR COMEDY
JIM CARREY The Grinch
GEORGE CLOONEY O Brother, Where Art Thou?
JOHN CUSACK High Fidelity
ROBERT DE NIRO Meet The Parents
MEL GIBSON What Women Want
Jim Carrey??????? Why?
What the hell is that about?
The Grinch?????
What about Christopher Guest in BEST IN SHOW?
Please.
Not one mention for Finding Forrester.
Booooooo!
Well, TITUS was the best film of 1998, and only
three people saw that (two people other than me),
even though Anthony Hopkins and Jessica Lange
were in it. Oh well.
Ok, there are some good ones:
CSI!!! YEAH! CSI – nomination
for BEST TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA!!!!
WoooHOOOO! Along with THE WEST WING &
THE SOPRANOS!
OK, THE PRACTICE & ER also…. Nice!
Great choices for:
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA
JESSICA ALBA Dark Angel (YEAH!)
LORRAINE BRACCO The Sopranos (natch)
AMY BRENNEMAN Judging Amy
EDIE FALCO The Sopranos (also natch)
SELA WARD Once and Again (brilliant!)
But…… then there’s: SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR
Buffy The Vampire Slayer
What???????
What about Gillian Anderson from THE X-FILES??????
UFFY???? (Oh, I guess X-Files is just old
hat now…. Not fashionable anymore. Whatever.)
Ok, moving on to:
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA
ANDRE BRAUGHER Gideon’s Crossing (nice choice!)
JAMES GANDOLFINI The Sopranos (also also natch)
ROB LOWE The West Wing (impressive – but why is he in this category?)
DYLAN McDERMOTT The Practice
MARTIN SHEEN The West Wing (wooHOOOO!)
And...............
WILL & GRACE GETS FIVE NOMINATIONS!
YEAAAAAAAAAH!
Best Comedy & all FOUR of them too!
Yeah!
Allison Janney & Bradley Whitford (CJ &
Josh from WEST WING)
also nominated in Supporting Actor categories.
(If Rob Lowe is in a Leading Actor category,
these two should be as well.)
So, in my typical female biased fashion, I will
raise a frosted flute full of bubbles
to those I love, and not give a fig about those
I don’t, after all ~ It’s only the Golden Globes.
The real Super Bowl is the Academy Awards - for
outstanding film achievements of 2000.
They will be presented on March 25, 2001, at
the Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium.
Sunday at the Oscars® will be televised live
by the ABC Television Network beginning at 5 p.m.
(PST), with a half-hour arrivals segment preceding
the presentation ceremony.
The 58th Annual Golden Globe Awards will take
place Sunday, January 21, 2001,
with a live telecast airing on NBC at 8 PM (EST)
and produced by dick clark productions
in association with the Hollywood Foreign Press
Association.
Of course….. I’d LOVE to receive any of the above, who am I kidding!
