Tonight's vice presidential debate, which
we presumed would be a sideshow,
has assumed critical importance, as Cheney tries
to halt the ticket's slide in momentum.
After Bush's faltering performance with
Kerry, GOP strategists said Cheney's aim is to return
public attention to 9-11 (Again?) and
the administration's broader handling of terrorism and away
from what they called a "second-guessing" debate
over the bungled decision to invade Iraq.

"Bush failed to explain his wrong choices. Here
are four mistakes Bush made:
First, he failed to defend his go-it-alone
foreign policy that has alienated our allies.
Second, he chose not to level with the American
people and our troops about the
deteriorating situation in Iraq:
Third, instead of owning up to his mistakes,
he smirked and scowled and refused
to directly answer the hard questions.
Fourth, when John Kerry outlined his plan,
Bush said he wasn't sure we could afford it,
even as he continues to promise more tax cuts
for the wealthiest Americans."

At the very least, the timing of the release
shows that the White House deliberately withheld
a genuine document which contained the characteristics
of the memos which are said to have
been forged. From the beginning, Bush's supporters
have claimed that typewriters of the
period could not produce the documents.
It's also the fourth time the White

had released all of Bush's non-medical documents.
White House liar Dan Bartlett told the WaHoPo
that he had put out "absolutely everything" he
had of Bush's nonmedical military records in February.
The document in question was released to
an independent researcher as part of a FOI Act request
in 2000, but was not made available to the general
media until the White House released it - under
a federal court order after a lawsuit by the Associated

It's a good thing CBS hired partisan Republicans to look into
this.

Kerry's use of the Bush 41 quote about not invading

There's something weird going on with Bush and his daddy.
I used to think he wanted to impress Ol' Dad, but now I think he
wants to one-up him.
In 2000, he never said he wanted to be like his Dad, it was always "Reagan
this" and "Reagan
that."
I think Bush hates his daddy, and wants to finish what he
started NOT to compliment him,
but to show him how a REAL man would've handleds Saddam - the "right" way
- back in 1991.
Further proof: How Bush 41 and Scowcroft and and Stormin' Norman
and all of dad's old team
said before the war that it would be a grave mistake to (A) try to take
Baghdad and (B) get into this
war without a healthy alliance (including Arabs) behind him the way 41
did for his fake war.
I think the drunken Smirk still wants to go "mano-a-mano" with his old
man.

actions
Bart,
MW said it first. I was thinking that all the
so-called pundits either got it wrong or were just
too chicken to state the obvious. GW Bush is a
pampered little bully, a privileged frat-boy who,
when among his friends, is never told he is wrong
about ANYTHING.
Remember that one interview he did where he said "I
don't feel I have to explain myself to anyone"?
He really believes that.
He is the leader of the free world, and he doesn't
have to explain himself to anyone?!?!
Thanks, MW. You, and you alone, decsribed exactly
what was going on in the debate.
Dubya was ANNOYED that someone was pointing out
that he was WRONG!

Also, since Bush can't explain anything to anyone,
being an arrogant prick helps him
keep the facade in place by pretending he could explain, but feeling
like he doesn't have to.

Kerry's attempts to avoid military service

Subject: Looking forward to VP
debate
I think the Vice Presidential debate Tuesday evening
will be even more of an interesting contest
than the Bush - Kerry debate. The incumbent, Vice
President Cheney, is a seasoned politician
who has had a lifelong career in government and
as CEO of Haliburton. In the 2000 VP debate
Cheney stomped Senator Joe Lieberman into the ground.
His opponent, John Edwards, has less political
experience. But he has come from nowhere to national
contender in record time. Edwards is considered
a legendary trial lawyer. He has won cases for victims
where no lawyer has won before. To be a lawyer
of that caliber, you have to be very sharp - think fast
- and be able to get the jury to vote your way.
This is a match up of a reigning champion against
a highly talented hotshot newcomer and I think it will be
a much more exciting event to watch than the presidential
debate was where one party was clearly smarter
than the other. The presidential debate might be
more important - but I think the VP debate will be more
interesting. I'm looking forward to watching it.

echoes Mussolini

Excerpt:
Having taken part in the killing of as many as
37,000 Iraqi civilians, Blair's distractions, not his victims,
are news: from his arcane "struggle" with his Tweedledee,
Gordon Brown, to his damascene conversion
to the perils of global warming. On the atrocity
at Beslan, Blair is allowed to say, without irony or challenge,
that "this international terrorism will not prevail".
These are the same words spoken by Mussolini soon after
he had bombed civilians in Abyssinia.
The Iraqi occupation is a systematic, murderous
assault on a civilian population by a corrupt American officer class,
given licence by its superiors in Washington. In
May, the US marines used battle tanks and helicopter gunships to
attack the slums of Fallujah. They admitted killing
600 people, a figure far greater than the total number of civilians
killed by the "insurgents" during the past year.
The generals were candid; this futile slaughter was an act of revenge
for the killing of three US mercenaries. Sixty
years earlier, the SS Das Reich division killed 600 French civilians at
Oradour-sur-Glane as revenge for the kidnapping
of a German officer by the resistance. Is there a difference?
