"Right now it's pretty clear the Bushes (Prez
and Guv) and Congresses (fed and FL),
and all the courts, are closing their doors
to the Schindlers. The GOP has been bitten hard
by this little gambit, and they must realize
there's no advantage to them if the tube is reinserted.
They'd just have to go through the same farce
again sometime in the future. But did anyone
notice how the Prez skipped out and let the
Guv take the heat? And has the Prez made any
statements about the Red Lake, Minnesota, tragedy?
I hadn't heard. And does anyone else
think the Guv has his fingers crossed that Ms.
Schiavo doesn't die on Good Friday? If she does,
the Fetus People will go ballistic. I can already
see the faded T-shirts showing a crucified Terri
Schiavo being welcomed into heaven by Buddy
Jesus."

Bush agreed to sell F-16 fighter jets to
Pakistan in a major policy shift
rewarding a key war ally, angering its nuclear
neighbor, India.
Though no final decision has been made "at
this point" on similar F-16 sales to India,
the BFEE hinted they'd be happy to make multi-millions
from that sale, too
So, it's a win-win all around for Bush.
He gets to reward the only nation that
has sold nuke secrets and materials to terrorists,
and picks up a super-profitable counter-sale to
their hated nuclear enemy in India.

Debunking
myths about the Schiavo case
Excerpt:
Myth: Theresa Schiavo could get better.
Yes, theoretically, in a parallel universe,
two hundred years in the future where Star Trek is actually real,
Dr. McCoy could travel back in time and stumble
across Mrs. Schiavo and give her a pill (which she
couldn't swallow, since swallowing is a conscious
action) and she would regrow her cerebral cortex.
Mr. Spock would then find the keeper of her katra
and restore her personality via a Vulcan Mind Meld™.
But, short of that, no, she won't get better.

I was indoctinated into the Catholic Church
run by Jesuits in the early '60's.
The only thing that saved me from losing my mind
was the skills I learned in public
high school dealing with critical thinking, and
classes studying the "Great Ideas"
authors (Plato, Locke, Rousseau, etc.).
What these studies encouraged was an enjoyable
and relentless search for the truth
- wherever it may lead. People with this
type of attitude do not make good "pliable"
citizens that can be swayed by rhetoric. Is
it any wonder that the GOP constantly
attacks public education and supports the growth
of religion?

Recently, the D. C. pundits started baying
about George W. Bush’s brilliant success
bringing "democracy" to the Middle East. "Lately
even the harshest critics of Bush have
been forced to admit: Maybe he’s right about
freedom’s march around the globe,"
Brian Williams announced on NBC Nightly News. "What
if we are watching an example
ofpresidential leadership that will be taught in
America’s schools for generations to come?
It’s an idea gaining more currency."
Next came Andrea (Mrs. Alan Greenspan) Mitchell,
who spoke of "a historic turning
point, like the fall of the Berlin Wall." The analogy
first appeared in David Ignatius’
Washington Post column. It was attributed to Walid
Jumblatt, a Lebanese Druze leader
who’d had his U.S. visa revoked in 2003 after
regretting that Paul Wolfowitz, whom he
called a "microbe," had survived a Baghdad rocket
attack. Dick Cheney echoed him on
right-wing radio. It’s an officially approved
White House theme.

Bart,
During all of this discussion I keep thinking
of the comment of Christopher Reeves' mother

Compare that to the wish of the Schindlers

Who is actually running the country?

At whose request? Why, at the request of

A man was arrested after trying to steal

Michael W. Mitchell, of Rockford, Ill., entered

ass pulled out the box cutter and broke the glass on a couple of display

"He told me if I wasn't on Terri's side then I wasn't
on God's side, either," McKenzie told The Associated Press.
McKenzie said he then pointed his own gun
at Mitchell and ordered him to lie on the ground.
But Mitchell fled out the store's back door before
police arrived, he said.
You don't ever want

What's
the Score?
by Slacktavist

Excerpt:
The Schiavo case demonstrates the problem of
partisan epistemology.
We now have "red facts" and "blue facts."
Newspapers -- hoping not to upset either faction
of their potential circulation -- have no intention
in taking sides in such disputes. Thus two competing
sets of claims, two very different sets of facts,
two opposing narratives, are treated as equally
valid. News reporters, unlike sports reporters,
feel no responsibility to check the scoreboard,
or even to acknowledge that there is a scoreboard.
They tend to deny the possibility that a scoreboard
might even exist.
In the case of Terry Schiavo there is such a scoreboard,
and what it tells us is nowhere near as murky
and ambiguous as the AP's Q&Q or CNN's vapid,
incurious coverage would suggest. The facts of the
matter have been hashed out, again and again and
again, in court.

Right-Wingers Exploiting Terri Schiavo
by Joe Conason

Excerpt:
Never underestimate the Republican leaders in
Washington. Whenever they appear
to have exhausted the possibilities for cynical
abuse of their authority, they can still
inflict fresh outrages upon the nation.
By intervening in the sad dispute over Terri Schiavo
between her husband and parents,
the President and his Congressional allies have
again revealed how little respect they have
for any conservative or constitutional principle
that doesn’t enhance their partisan power.
In the name of defending human life, they have
swept aside their own party’s traditional
commitment to federalist respect for state law
and to the separation of powers between
the legislature and the judiciary. In the name
of equal protection under the law, they have
departed from all traditional notions of legality.
Under civilized rules of debate—particularly
over a matter as emotionally disturbing as
this one—it is wise as well as polite to
assume that everyone is arguing from a position of
sincerity. The Schiavo case shows why those rules
have become increasingly difficult to
observe with a straight face.
