It would be easier to believe if he hadn't hidden it from the FBI

during Rove's first interview with the FBI. The

been sissies.
So terrified that they'd wet themselves if Bush

But I think the strangle hold of fear has
been broken. Look at all the poll numbers.

the administration because they didn't think it would sell.
They, and hopefully the Democrats, are learning
that it DOES sell. And the better it sells, the less Bush
and Co. can fight back and try to intimidate them. The
BFEE is in a death spiral, and I can't stop grinning.

on Arabiya,
translating his speech to Arabic. He was recycling
bits and pieces of various speeches he used over two years.
E., a younger cousin, and I were sitting
around in the living room, sprawled on the relatively cool tiled floor.
The electricity had been out for 3 hours and we
couldn't turn on the air conditioner with the generator electricity we
were getting. E. and I had made a bet earlier about what the theme of tonight's
speech would be. E. guessed Bush would dig up
the tired, old WMD theme from somewhere under the debris of idiocy and lies
coming out of the White House. I told him he'd
dredge up 9/11 yet again· tens of thousands of lives later, we would
have to bear the burden of 9/11· again.
I won the bet. The theme was, naturally, terrorism - the only mention of 'weapon' or 'weapons' was in reference to Libya. He actually used the word 'terrorist' in the speech 23 times.
He was trying to paint a rosy picture of the situation. According to him, Iraq was flourishing under the occupation. In Bush's Iraq, there is reconstruction, there is freedom (in spite of an occupation) and there is democracy.
"He's describing a different country·" I commented to E. and the cousin.
"Yes," E. replied.
"He's
talking about the *other* Iraq· the one with the WMD."

senators call for Halliburton inquiry

Twenty eight Democratic Senators, led by
Byron Dorgan (D-Votes with Bush), are calling for
a formal Department of Defense investigation into
what they described as "alarming" reports of
fraudulent, wasteful and abusive practices by Halliburton

auditors about billing practices, the firm received a

million bonus for its work in

Lots of chatter about a classified State
Department memo that was distributed and read aboard
Air Force One the day after Joseph Wilson outed
the White House and its bogus Niger claim.
The memo, dated June 10, 2003, included the name
of Wilson's wife Valerie Plame, noting she
worked for the CIA and that that information should
not be shared. The memo stands as a
possible source for White House officials such
as Karl Rove and Scooter Libby, both of whom
were dishing to Matt Cooper about Wilson and Plame
during the summer of 2003.
As the Wall Street Journal notes today, "The
memo's details are significant because they will
make it harder for officials who saw the
document to claim that they didn't realize the identity
of the CIA officer was a sensitive matter."
But there may be an easier explanation for
how Libby, chief of staff to Cheney, found out
Plame worked at the CIA÷he simply visited
her workplace.
I'm so old, I remember when thre WaHoPo uncovered crimes
instead of helping to hide them.

sheep in George Orwell's "Animal Farm,"
chanting mindless slogans to drown out challenges
to the party line. Expletives deleted,
here's a typical example: "You are calling

Joe Wilson is a proven liar.... His wife arranged
for him to go to Niger to drink sweet tea.
Chenny [sic] did not authorize the trip. Neither
did George Tenet. Mr. Wilson lied about those facts."
The rest of the party line goes like this:
Rove and Libby were warning reporters against
false stories. Anyhow, Wilson's wife, Valerie
Plame, wasn't really a covert agent working
on WMD, but a nobody bureaucrat. Or if she was
a spy, Rove didn't actually say her name.
Besides, the Brits say Wilson was wrong, that there
was plenty of evidence that Iraq tried to
buy African uranium, and anybody who says different
is pro-terrorist. President Bush rules!
Under Communist rule, Moscow had two newspapers.
The standard joke was that
"There is no Pravda in Izvestia, and there is no Izvestia
in Pravda"

No, Americans aren't there yet, but the Wilson/Plame
affair is pushing them in that direction.

Miller Crusade Diminishes the Press

Judith Miller leaves much to be desired
as a martyr for the First Amendment. Based on both
past performance and present circumstance, she
actually symbolizes a terrible betrayal of the
public trust by the national media. And whatever
she and her employers think they're achieving
in defiance of the special counsel investigating
the Valerie Wilson case, her conduct will inevitably
diminish the reputation and power of the press.
Her coverage of Iraq and those still-missing
weapons of mass destruction was marked by arrogance,
incompetence and eagerness to advance the agenda
of the Bush White House. Those seem to be the
hallmarks of her current misadventure as well.
Having written very bad stories that helped drive the
country into war against a nonexistent threat,
she is now creating very bad law for press freedom.

I think Osama is living in one of the guest
houses at Bush's fake "ranch" in Crawford.
He's clean-shaven now, and likes to wear jeans,
t-shirts and a straw cowboy hat.
