Military
Worship & the Republic
by Ivan Eland as seen on consortiumnews.com
Link
Excerpt:
During key moments of the Iraq conflict, Bush's
supporters have silenced war skeptics by
charging that any dissent would hurt the troops.
War critics were accused of undermining
morale of American soldiersor demeaning their
sacrifice.
Satirists have summarized this debate-stopping
question as "why do you hate the troops?"
Yet beyond the question of whether you're "supporting
the troops" by keeping quiet as
they are dispatched to an unwise war, there is
the additional question of whether venerating
the military is healthy for any democratic Republic.
In this guest essay, the Independent
Institute's Ivan Eland addresses that issue:

Can Bush
get much Lower?
as seen in the Tahlequah, OK Daily Press
Link
Excerpt:
The president has sunk so far down in the polls
it's hard to imagine he could get any lower.
And it's no wonder: Even staunch loyalists are
at pains to name one positive thing Bush has
accomplished during his five years in office,
except perhaps the seating of two new justices
(presumed to be conservative by ardent Bush supporters,
who could be sorely disappointed
if they merely turn out to be fair).
The usual response from Bush fans, when asked
such impertinent questions about their fearless leader,
is to fire another accusatory salvo at his predecessor,
whose peccadilloes are not only irrelevant to the
situation at hand, but pale by comparison.
Bush's "political missteps," on the other hand,
would fill several pages, even with small type.
When the Oklahoma knuckledraggers turn on Bush, he's in serious trouble.
If we could only get the Democrats to wake up.

All the
President's Leaks
Link
Excerpt:
The president's defenders want you to think that
when it comes to leaking, every president does it.
Why should Bush be held to a different standard?
Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Nazi.) told CNN that Bush was
innocently asking itself, "How do we get the
full story out there?" Besides, since the president can authorize
the declassification of anything he chooses to
declassify, he can't be involved in anything untoward.
"This was not a leak," Joseph diGenova, a GOP
spin doctor said.
"This was an authorized disclosure."
Ah, yes, it depends on what the meaning of the
word "leak" is.
That sounds familiar, doesn't it?"
Yeah, but Clinton didn't send 2500 men to their deaths when he "lied"
about sex
so there are some slight, minor differences if you look close enough.

Yes, He
Would
by Paul Krugman
Link
Excerpt:
"But he wouldn't do that."
That sentiment is what made it possible for Bush
to stampede America into the Iraq war and to fend off
hard questions about the reasons for that war
until after the 2004 election. Many people just didn't want to
believe that an American president would deliberately
mislead the nation on matters of war and peace.
Now the military warns that Bush may be planning
another war. The most alarming of the warnings come
from Seymour Hersh, the veteran journalist who
broke the Abu Ghraib scandal. Hersh suggests that Bush
believes that a bombing campaign could lead to
regime change in Iran - and that they refuse to rule out
the use of tactical nuclear weapons.
"But he wouldn't do that," say people who think
they're being sensible."

Loser Nation
by Greg Palast
Link
Excerpt:
Looking out at today's temptest-tossed masses
of protesting immigrants, the wretched refuse just
looking for a break, I finally figured out what's
wrong with George W. Bush. He's so far away from
his refugee loser roots that he just doesn't
get what it is to be American. So he steals the one thing that
every American is handed off the boat: a chance.
It's not just the immigrants denied a green card.
When Bush threatens to take away your Social
Security; when Bush's oil wars hike the price of crude
and threaten your union job at the airline; when
Bush tells you sleeper cells are sleeping under your
staircase, you don't take chances anymore --
you lose your chance -- and the land of opportunity
becomes a landscape of fear, an armed madhouse.
You want to say that George W. Bush is an evil
sonovabitch?
I'd go further: he's un-American.

on Democrats
I simply don't get it. I don't see
it.
Pelosi has been out front.
Reid has been out front.
Kerry, Kennedy, Feingold, Clinton, Biden.
What more do people expect from them while they
still have no power?
They still have the power to speak, but they usually
save that to trash McKinney and Dean.
At this point, I'd almost be happy with lip[
service, but we can't even get that.
Or, if we do, it's a message with 40-word sentences
that nobody can understand..
I think they have used the little power they have
to keep the Bush agenda derailed
and to have put the GOP in a horrible position
going into November.
You mean when they voted to coinfirm Bush's Nazis
on the high court?
That's hardly derailing his agenda.
Those gross mistakes will haunt us for decades.
And the GOP got themselves into their own mess.
This isn't a Demo trap they fell into..
I'd would like to see a little more rah rah, root
for the home team as we really gear up for the midterms.
Is showing dems in a pee puddle your idea of
motivating people to vote?
Besides wet themselves in fear, what have they
done?
I'm just calling them as I see them.
Maybe if they weren't all Bush apologists they
could get on Russert or Face the Whore
or This Whore with Judas Maximus, but
if all they're going to do is agree with Bush and
trash McKinney, Murtha and Dean, Russert would
rather have newsmakers on.
I'll give you the Nancy Grace guarantee
that if a high ranking Democrat called Russert and said,
"I'd like to come on call Bush a liar, a thief,
a fraud and an incompetent war president,"
he'd let them come on the show and he'd give
them all the time they wanted..
C'mon Bart. We need every bit of help we
can muster.

Subject: Bush's leaks
Bart, I've been thinking about the Plame leak
and Bush's explanation.
I just don't buy it.
The timing is all wrong. Not just the timeline
of events, but the timing of releasing the information.
Libby has been squirming like a hooked worm for
months now and Fitzgerald's investigation is
getting closer and closer to the inner circle.
If the President legally and ethically released the
information to the public, then disclosing that
fact up front would have saved them investigative scrutiny.
No, I suspect that this was all dreamt up by their
lawyers recently and the real truth is that Cheney
gave the information to Libby on his own and
now Bush is covering up for him.
Am I just another conspiracy nut? Have I
been pushed over the edge from
one-too-many lies (everything from "I choked
on a pretzel" to "war is a last resort")?

Once Bush invades, that's 5M barrels a day

Subject: Why do you hate Tom
Cruise?
What has he done to you?

Faisal
Faisal, I don't hate him, he's just such
an inviting target.
He's the most overrated star in all of Hollywood,
and that's saying a lot.
He's the poster boy for "Life isn't fair."
Do you know Philip Seymore Hoffman?
He's probably 100 times a better actor
than Cruise,
but Cruise will make 100 times more money
than Hoffman.
Tom Cruise is Britney Spears 25 years from now.
I'll say two good things about the man:
He's got a good eye for what
will make money.
He's not afraid to work with
the best actors in the world,
which makes me wonder if he understands how bad
he can't act.

...the involved vendors were very successful
in the media with deflecting the blame from

However, when you listen to people who

problems you get a very different picture...
As these primaries were being conducted Summit
County Ohio announced that over 70%
of the memory cards for their precinct based
optical-scan machines would not work.
The vendor, ES&S, announced that their memory
card contractor had made mistakes
on some cards and they would be replaced. Memory
cards for electronic voting machines
store vote tabulations amongst other things.

Subject: using Bart logic
Using your logic, don't you have to argue that
Congress _must_ support a strike against Iran?
They can't be _absolutely sure_ that there is
no danger from WMD in Iran, and the stakes are impossibly high.
So there will be no choice but to back military
intervention when, as it seems he will, Bush asks for backing
in a few weeks or months. Isn't that right?
Or, how do you get around the "absolutely sure" hurdle?
Because we need to be able to get around it.
Tacky
Tack, if Iran gets their finger on the trigger, we'll have to take action
to stop them.
But they weren't a problem under Clinton because he didn't threaten
them.
Bush knew by threatening North Korea, Iran and Iraq, then invading
Iraq, that North Korea and Iran
would have to nuke up which would start wars which his friends could
use to steal more billions of dollars.
Bush created both problems..
