The Hariri
Mirage: Lessons Unlearned
by Robert Parry at consortiumnews.com
Link
Excerpt:
In October 2005, a drumbeat began about Syria's
presumed guilt for the assassination of former
Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri. From President
Bush to the New York Times editorial page,
almost everyone agreed that Syrian security forces
must have been responsible, though there was
some debate about whether "regime change" was
called for. However, with little notice in the past
half year, the initial Hariri investigation has
crumbled. Still, the American people have heard almost
nothing about this changed situation.

Conflicting
Stories on Haditha
Link
Excerpt:
Investigators and townspeople have said that
marines overreacted to a fatal roadside bombing and shot
the civilians, only one of whom was armed, in
cold blood.
Marines and their lawyers contend that they believed
they were under a concerted attack, and entitled
under their rules of engagement to use lethal
force against those who they believed were responsible.
The 24 Iraqis killed include 19 civilians in several
houses, where, marines say their use of grenades and
blind fire was permitted under their combat guidelines
when they believed their lives were threatened.
Blind fire?
In a city of five million people?
Where children are playing?
Doesn't sound like good "guidelines" to me...

Subject: military raping their

Bart, you wrote:
> I think they rape their fellow soldiers as
a political statement: "You don't belong here."
> The blame liberals for allowing women to
serve, so they rape them to get even..
I have to ask: do you really think that soldiers
with conservative views are so thuggish,
that they rape women to pay back liberals for
making them serve with women?
I think men are beasts.
I think once you allow the beast out of the cage
to kill, kill, kill, what's a little rape?
Do you really think these rapes (even one) are
politically motivated?
The Pickles Bushes of the world aren't in Iraq, asserting their rights,
so it's a good bet
that a women in uniform is "one of them" and thus "fair game" for what
happens to her.
Do you really think the Army is that poorly disciplined?
Can you spell Haditha?
Do you still buy the popular myth that we recruit
out of jails?
Do you think there are that many rapists in uniform?
War brings out the worst in men, and that can get super-ugly.
I highly doubt this "friend of a friend" anecdote
you put so much evidence in, as well.
Do you believe everything some schmuck puts in
an e-mail and fires off to you?
No.
OK, then here's a doozy you ought to put up on
your website:
"Bloggers with serious political views undercut
the credibility of others who share
their beliefs when they print sensationalist
bullshit on their website."
I look forward to seeing it on bartcop.com
soon.
SPC Bob

No telling what you meant to say.
I believe those rapes occur and I believe most aren't reported.
Why report a rape if your CO is just going to tell you to "shake it
off?"
For years we've heard stories that women don't drink fluids after 4
PM because they
have to leave the tent/barracks to use the bathroom and that's when
many rapes happen.
Why would so many women volunteer to join the military to fabricate
rape stories?
Wouldn't it be easier to not volunteer?

Subject: Carlin and Coulter
What do you expect a near 70 year old man to do?
Carlin's act the last decade or so has been outrage
at the stupidity that surrounds him.
He had a chance to confront one of the most outrageous
sluts ever, but he went to sleep, instead.
If I remember correctly, they were supposed to be on different nights,
but they were put on
the same night hoping that fireworks would happen, but again,
the liberal chose not to engage.
The audience is obviously packed with modern day
brown shirts.
How strange that in a city of as many millions
as New York, probably the twenty WORST people out of
all of them showed up to cheer for Coulter, And
no-one, not any of the talk show hosts from Leno to Lauer
have had the guts to call Coulter a liar. They
just play nice, pretend she represents a legitimate "other" view point,
and allow her to keep lying about anything and
everything.
Can't argue with that...
But we should expect Carlin to risk assault form
the neo-nazi fans of Coulter?
It's not his fight.
*I* didn't draft him for this fight - he volunteered.
I have no control over Carlin's act - he writes
it, not me.
If he's tired and wants to rest, that's OK -
next time my expectations won't be as high.
The high point of that whole show was the musical
guest, who I'm unfamiliar with (K. T.
Tunstall)
that had the old "this machine kills fascists"
splashed across her guitar.
Wanna bet that was put on there special for the
Coulter crowd?

Excerpt:
Shortly after Valerie Plame was outed, Joe Wilson
received a long handwritten letter from Poppy Bush
expressing his "outrage at what had happened
and his understanding of the seriousness of it," according to Wilson.
The elder Bush once said that "those who betray

insidious of traitors." How must he feel now
that his son is the leader of a gang of the "most insidious of traitors?"
The American taxpayers who paid for the investigation
to determine the identities of the insidious traitors deserve
to know what happened to Fitzgerald between
October 28, 2005 and June 13, 2006.

U.S. troops searched Sunday for two missing soldiers
south of Baghdad as witnesses claimed
the Americans were led away by masked gunmen
after the attack that left one of their comrades dead.
A farmer who said he witnessed the attack Friday,
said three Humvees were manning a checkpoint when
they came under fire from many directions. Two
of the vehicles went after the assailants, but the third was
ambushed before it could move, he told the can't-be-trusted
Associated Press.
Seven masked gunmen, one with a heavy machine
gun, killed the driver of the third vehicle,
then took the two other U.S. soldiers captive,
the witness said. The account could not be verified.

Why it's tough for Blacks to vote in the US - by Greg
Palast
Link
Excerpt:
Here's how the scheme worked: The RNC mailed
these voters letters in envelopes marked,
"Do not forward", to be returned to the sender.
These letters were mailed to servicemen and women,
some stationed overseas, to their US home addresses.
The letters then returned to the Bush-Cheney
campaign as "undeliverable."
The lists of soldiers of "undeliverable" letters
were transmitted from state headquarters, in this case Florida,
to the RNC in Washington. The party could then
challenge the voters' registration and thereby prevent
their absentee ballot being counted.
They can't win without cheating, so why do the Democrats let them?

Not everyone can read and understand simple statements.

You want to bet on Secretariat/Affirmed (pick
the year or the horse).
You always bet on the best horse in the field.
That's the only logical thing to do, but logic
has no place when her name is mentioned.
It doesn't mean you want to own it, or mate with
it, eat with it, etc. You want to bet on a winner.
Right now, Hillary is ahead of the pack.
Since it is fashionable for the beltway Democrats to dislike
Clinton (both of them) they want to cut them
down.
It is time for them to pay attention to the world
outside the Beltway.
Then maybe the party (and the American people)
would win.
Keep hammering.

Bush is
sinking fast
That's what historians say
Link
Excerpt:
Earlier studies used categories which had been
accepted for many years: excellent, above average, average,
below average and failure. At least two of the
recent articles rank Bush only in relationship to presidents who
have been judged to have been poor presidents.
In
other words this study is judging the worst of the worst.
Examples of low-ranking presidents are Buchanan,
Andrew Johnson, Grant, Harding and Nixon. A 2004 study
conducted by George Mason University in a survey
of 415 presidential historians concludes that George Bush
should now be included in this list - or worse,
designated as "the worst."
80% considered Bush's first term a failure, half
call it the worst since the Great Depression,
more than a third said it was the worst in
100 years and 11 percent ranked his first term the "worst ever."
He appears to be a little man in a
very big job.

me some fancy butter.
It was the Land 'o Lakes Ultra Creamy Sweet and Salted Butter

We rushed right over, and they had two kinds of fresh Bixby corn for
sale.
One was Temptation, which we've had before. It's a great mixture
of white and yellow corn.
They also had a brand new strain called Pearl, which you might
guess was white.
They were teeny, tiny ears, some only four inches long, but
I'm a gambler so we grabbed
a dozen of each and drove back to Casa de Bart like we'd just robbed
a bank.
I built a fire on the Bart Grill and threw a few ears of each on with
the burgers.
When it was time to chomp, I was Pavlov-ing all over the place.
From the very first taste, I knew I was in Heaven.
I've waited 11 months for this - and the taste was perfect.
It was so good, I never even tasted the Temptation.
I enjoyed three of them with my burger and red potatoes*
Oklahoma - it's corn country, and Bixby is the Capitol.

WaHoPo Teams
up with Rove
Link
Excerpt:
In today's Washington Post, there's a front page
story about Rove and the 2006 elections. The story says:
Karl Rove emerges from the CIA leak case with
his reputation scuffed, his power slightly diminished...
Most people say Rove's stature has been diminished
only slightly, and perhaps only temporarily,
by Bush's political problems and the leak
probe.
What do you suppose is the reason Rove's rep is
only "scuffed" and "only slightly" diminished?
Here's a thought: Maybe it has a little something
to do with the editorial choices that are made day in and day out
by editors at the Post and other news orgs. Incredibly,
this Post story on Rove's post-Plame rep doesn't contain
a single word about the very Plame-related things
that should have damaged his reputation: The fact that he played
a role in outing her and the fact that the White
House repeatedly lied about it. That's a glaring omission.
You'd think Post editors might have seen fit
to include such crucial context.
The job of the whore press is to tell lies that make the fascists look
good.
And if there's room, tell lies that make the Democrats look bad.

Excerpt:
People with money ...sit on the sidelines, either
because they feel they can't accomplish much
or because they hope that the U.S. mainstream
news media will magically start doing its job again.
Ironically, many of the people who could make
the biggest difference in solving the media crisis have
amassed their fortunes in the media. They have
names like Turner, Spielberg, Streisand, Reiner, Lear, Clooney.
Some have even bemoaned the state of American
journalism. There's no reason that Ted Turner couldn't put
his billions of dollars to use creating a new
version of CNN. Steven Spielberg has created moving cinematic
tributes to the brave generation of Americans
who turned back fascist totalitarianism across the globe.
He could invest some of his money in news outlets
that would stand up for the Constitutional freedoms.
George Clooney produced a compelling film about
Edward R. Murrow and other newsmen of the 1950s
standing up to the bullying of Sen. Joe McCarthy.
But Clooney could help create ways for honest journalists
of this generation to do their work and uphold
the principles that Murrow embodied.
In the meantime, we are trying to raise $5,000
in the next five days.
Will we lose consortiumnews.com due to lack of funds?
Speaking for all Democratic sites who aren't on top, 2005 has been a
dismal
year for fund-raising..
Surprisingly, it's been much worse than 2005, a dead year when
we were severely depressed.

How many Demo sites will be here five days from now?
