The '06
Stakes Just Got Raised
by Robert Parry as seen on consortiumnews.com

Excerpt:
The narrow margin of the Court's rebuke to Bush
on military tribunals highlights the stakes on the
table for the November 2006 congressional elections
- nothing short of the survival of a meaningful
constitutional system in the United States.
The majority opinion, which stopped Bush from
proceeding with a kangaroo court that stripped Gitmo detainees
of basic legal protections and mocked the Geneva
Conventions, carried a profound secondary message - that the
Court was not prepared to endorse
Bush's vision of his "war powers" as limitless and beyond challenge.
But it was equally noteworthy that only five of
the nine justices believed that the rule of law and constitutional limits
on Bush's powers should prevail. Four justices
- Scalia, Thomas, Alito and Roberts - have made clear that
they are prepared to rubber-stamp any judgment
that Bush makes.
So, we're one judge short of losing democracy in America.
It's enough to make you want to vote in November.

Israel's
Big Gamble
Link
Excerpt:
Israel last night threatened to assassinate Palestinian
Prime Minister Ismael Haniyeh
if Hamas militants did not release a captured
Israeli soldier unharmed.
The unprecedented warning was delivered to Palestinian
President Mahmoud Abbas
in a letter as Israel debated a deal offered
by Hamas to free Corporal Gilad Shalit.
It came as Israeli military officials readied
a second invasion force for a huge offensive into Gaza.
Hamas's Gaza-based political leaders, including
Mr Haniyeh, had already gone into hiding.
But last night's direct threat to kill Mr Haniyeh,
a democratically elected head of state, sharply raised the stakes.
You know me - I don't get into this mess, but as one who plays poker,
that's the kind of bet that could easily backfire.
It's a hueueueuge gamble because if that soldier dies, Israel
has
already committed to killing the PM.
If they don't, they look weak when they can't afford to look weak.
And the assassination of the Palastinian PM wouldn't be a good thing
for Der Monkey's quagmire.
I understand the value of getting your man back, but Israel's bet is
hueueueueueueuge.
In the near future, when someone asks, "How
did things get so out of control?"
they might look at this incident the opposite way of how we look at
the Bay of Pigs.
The world could use a little good luck.

American
gullibility
Link
Excerpt:
Many Americans have turned a blind eye to the
administration's illegal and unconstitutional spying
on the grounds that, as they themselves are doing
nothing wrong, they have nothing to fear.
If this is the case, why did our Founding Fathers
bother to write the Constitution? If the executive branch
can be trusted not to abuse power, why did Congress
pass legislation establishing a panel of federal judges
(ignored by the Bush administration) to oversee
surveillance? If President Bush can decide that he can ignore
statutory law, how does he differ from a dictator?
If Bush can determine law, what is the role of Congress
and the courts? If "national security" is a justification
for elevating the power of the executive, where is his
incentive to find peaceful solutions?
The bigger and badder the boogeyman is, the more Bush's arms dealer
allies get paid to "protect" us.
When the Soviet Union fell, they lost their reason for spending $400
billion a year on war toys.
Now we're in a never-ending war not with Iraq, but with an idea that
can't be killed.

Subject: religious insanity
Bart, I get your point.
I believe "organized religion" was necessary
during the millennia before the industrial revolution.
It explained all of the whys & hows
of the unexplainable for people.
Sure - they can't explain why the sun came up,
so they said, "The sun god lifted it with
his damn hands."
On the other side of the coin, there are
still many things that science cannot explain.
And who's to say God isn't responsible for science
by the way?
That's a tough one - who's to say Ol' Bart didn't
create the world?
Maybe being a bartcop.com
subscriber is the key to eternal salvation?
The fact that I don't claim that proves I'm
better then them.
People who come to Vegas the weekend of Sept 16
will have a good time.
What we're offering is real, like
Perkel's Church, it's not 72 Virgins or an eternity in the clouds.
You/we are up against thousands of years of organized
religion. I think organized religion
has lost it's usefulness for many people in
modern times including myself.
"God" is a tool that separates the scared, the
sick and the old from their money.
Personally, I am spiritual but don't subscribe
to an organized religion.
Basically, my view of God isn't as a separate
thing but that God is in all of us and everything.
But bottom line, we must stop the religiously
insane from running the world.

The Democrats have to be much more aggressive.
But 'more aggressive' doesn't mean
a quicker withdrawal. It means making your point
forcefully, on your own terms, repeatedly.
But they're not doing that.
What I see is Republicans on TV repeating their
'cut and run' charges.
Democrats deny the charge. No, we're not
for cutting and running.
He's right, that is sooo lame, but it's typical
for the gelding tutus who speak for the majority.
When they say, "The Democrats stand for this,"
you
reply with, "No, we stand for that."
In this case, this is "fewer
dead soldiers."
Who's going to stand up for more
dead soldiers?
The president wants to stay in Iraq for at least
three more years. It's not that he won't set a date to withdraw.
He doesn't even have a plan that gets to the
point where the US could end the occupation. In practice he wants
to stay in Iraq forever. What Repubicans are
voting for is More of the Same, More of the Same failed policy.

Bart:
I've read the Warren Commission report and Maria
Oswald says that she did indeed take that photo.
She never recanted. Personally I think that Oswald
did participate in a conspiracy shooting of Kennedy,
that he was in fact a patsy, and didn't realize
that the rest had set him up as a patsy until after he was arrested.
The best explanation of that photo is that his
handlers told him to have his wife take it and he was just too
stupid to realize why at the time. And yes, some
members of the conspiracy could have planted the photo later.
But I've never bought that Oswald acted alone.
Assassinations all have one thing in common: the nutty assassin
does the deed in public and grandstands for the
crowd and says something like "thus for all tyrants" like Booth did,
while risking capture, in fact almost demanding
capture. Oswald may indeed have had that personality, but he hid
and intended to get away. One of the last things
he said was that he was the patsy.
E.L.
Before he turned Nazi whore, Dennis Miller said, "If
the Dallas cops allowed the owner of
a local titty bar inside the station when
they had Oswald, who were they keeping out?"
It's a good question.
I don't believe it was a coincidence that Ruby was dying.

Not enough
Rape Opportunities
Link
Excerpt:
Atrocities are the norm during wartime. So are
civilian casualties. In the twentieth century, women and
kids comprised 80% of all wartime deaths. I just
wonder, why all the fuss over a mere 24 more, in Iraq?
It's hot over there, and these boys are wandering
around a country that looks more like wasted scrubland
than Amarillo. These Marines are toting over
a hundred pounds of gear. They're bored. They're irritable.
They need something to kill.
Another problem is not enough rape opportunities
in Iraq—that's probably making the soldiers really edgy.
Apparently, the Iraqi women are kept sequestered,
and swaddled in all these clothes—they look like they're
wrapped in yards of big sheets. Without even
a seductive ankle peeking out. Not easy to strip, and get at,
for rape purposes. Vietnam was a lot easier.
All those flimsy little pajama outfits—guys could just rip them off
with one gesture, and mount. And the girls were
so tiny, didn't even need to break a sweat while holding them down.
