Who's Helping
the Terrorists?
by Robert Parry
consortiumnews.com
Excerpt:
To Liz Cheney, who surely qualified on merit
for her former job as principal deputy assistant
secretary of state for Near Eastern affairs,
(ha ha
) there's only one option – to stay the course in Iraq
and to remain firmly in line behind President
Bush.
"We are at war," she wrote in bold type. "America
faces an existential threat. …
Quitting [Iraq] helps the terrorists. …" she
wrote.
Following the Bush/Liz Cheney logic, one would
have to conclude that the advocates of Bush's "surge"
or the neoconservatives who want an even bigger
escalation are doing exactly what Zawahiri wants.
Conversely, those who call for a phased withdrawal
are actually the ones thwarting al-Qaeda's desires.
Of course, the "logic" behind Bush's insistence
that Americans must do the opposite of what al-Qaeda
wants was never meant to be logical.
It was a rhetorical device to intimidate Americans
into falling in line behind Bush – or they would face
the intimidating question, as expressed in Liz
Cheney's words: Why are you trying to "help the terrorists"?
Bush is a terrorist's best friend and recruiter.
After 9-11, the whole world was with us, minus the terrorists.
Then Bush went on his "try to stop me" crime spree and now the whole
world hates us
and terrorism has a poster boy in America's failed (but oil-rich) president.

Sick, Literally,
of Fighting in Iraq

Excerpt:
Susan Tileston hasn't seen her son, Levi Moddrelle,
in more than two years. Levi served in Afghanistan & Iraq,
where he was stationed for almost a year. He
came home for Christmas in 2003, but wasn't the same.
Tileston said she doesn't know where her son
is, but she has an idea about why he's gone.
"He was providing protection to a contractor's
convoy," Tileston said. "An eight-year-old kid with an machine gun
was shooting at his convoy and he shot back and
had to kill an eight-year-old kid and that's when he lost it."
Tileston suspects her son has developed Post-Traumatic
Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Pentagon doctors estimate that 12 percent of the
1.5 million veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan suffer from PTSD.
Wow, that's 180,000
wounded-on-the-edge that nobody talks about.
3065
dead, 23,000
officially wounded, some say that's really 70,000
Now we have to add the 180,000
the Pentagon says has PSTD?
If Bush resigned today, he'll still be hurting America in 40 years.

America
Gone Wild
thestar.com
Excerpt:
The U.S. has chosen to subordinate the principles
of individual freedom to what it sees as its security needs.
It jails people indefinitely without charge,
utilizes interrogation methods that the United Nations describes as
torture, wages illegal wars and commits the very
crimes against humanity it once helped to prosecute.
For America's friends, this is heartbreaking to
watch.
At first, the Canadian government tried to skate
by this new troubling reality. It refused to give unqualified
support to the U.S. war on Iraq, but participated
eagerly in its invasion of Afghanistan.
It passed draconian anti-terror laws but was loath
to use them, preferring to hand over Canadian suspects
(Mohamed Jabarah being the most notable example)
to U.S. authorities to do with as they saw fit.
It didn't raise a peep when the U.S. imprisoned
Canadian teenager Omar Khadr in its notorious Gitmo.
What can the world do when Bush, backed by the
world's only superpower, instructs his soldiers
to rape, murder, kidnap and torture SUSPECTS
who later turn out to be innocent?
If another country took and abused the Bush twins
because
they could, Bush would be rightfully outraged.
But since Bush only does this to "darkies, ...animals
who have already lost their souls," it's OK?
Where would the Republican party be without racism?
And shame on America for almost electing these
racist bastards.
Excuse me, I'm going to be sick.

New Oleans: Drop Dead
usawhoretoday.com
Excerpt:
How dare Bush talk of the State of the Union
without mentioning the Gulf Coast, and especially New Orleans.
Has our president decided that one of our nation's
greatest devastations does not merit a mention? To be sure,
the federal government has set aside billions
of dollars for the region's recovery. But 15 months after Katrina,
tens of thousands of people still are displaced.
Some people are desperately trying to get home,
but just a fraction of the thousands who have applied for relief
have received it. Habitable housing is being
torn down to make way for "mixed-use" housing, and no provisions
have been made for the poor who used to live
in those projects. Children are being turned away from schools
because there are too few to accommodate them.
Citizens want to "stop the violence," but the social
infrastructure to deter crime is essentially
non-existent.

Subject: Iranian influence in
the region...?
Bart,
Been reading about US military forces having
"authorization" to kill Iranian agents
operating in Iraq, with the pretense of diminishing
"Iranian influence in the region".
2 things come to mind...
1. Who has the jurisdiction to give this "authorization"?
I'm assuming, the decider in chief.
2. Based on that logic, wouldn't Ahmadinejad also
have the moral authority to "authorize" Iranian agents
to kill American agents operating in Iraq, with
the stated goal of diminishing American influence in the region?
For that matter, why don't they also state
they have authorization to kill American agents in Mexico,
the UK or wherever else they may be in
order to decrease their influence in that region?
What the fuck?
Mandrazo
Bush wants Godlike powers to kidnap, rape, torture and murder anyone
he wants,
but if another country tries what he's doing, they are "terrorist nations."
Everybody sees this but the BFEE,

I'm so old, I remember when those heinous actions were illegal in America.

Subject: Kerry in 2004
Dear Bart,
You're right about Kerry not wanting to fight.
If he would have come out of the box like Jim
Webb...
Supposedly George (Macacca) Allen had gone to
bed so that the rest of the votes could be counted.
Instead of the Webb campaign saying, "Yeah
let's wait for the votes to be counted," he came out
and said "It's over - we won."
McCaskill (sp?) did the same thing, so did Jon
Tester each of them put the responsibility on the Repuke
to prove that they didn't win.
Taking a page out of the monkey's playbook in
2000 when he started picking his cabinet even though
all the votes weren't yet counted.
These people were aggressive and took it to the Repukes, never giving
them the chance to say fix the required votes.
Don't get me wrong I loved Gore (Kerry I voted
for because he was the nominee no other reason).
But imagine if Gore would have come out of the
box and said, "I'm picking my cabinet - It's over, we won,"
today would be a different world and we would
not have lost 3000 plus lives and I don't know how many maimed.
If only we would have wanted it more if only.....
Keep up the good work,
Olga
In poker, the aggressive player wins more than the sheep.
It's strange to watch two players on TV with the same hand.
Player 1 has A-10, so he bets.
Player 2 "only" has A-10, so he folds.
They had the same hand, but the aggressive guy wanted it more.
If only we could teach the Democrats how to play poker.

Ghosts of
dirty tricks past
by Joe Conason
salon.com
Excerpt:
Yet on the far right, poisonous propaganda can
be concocted from the most innocent ingredients.
That is precisely what the Unification Church's
Insight magazine proceeded to do on Jan. 19,
with the eager assistance of Fox News and right-wing
Web sites such as Lucianne.com.
Insight portrayed the Indonesian school as a "madrassa,"
suggesting the Saudi-financed institutions that
allegedly train Wahhabi terrorists in Pakistan,
indicated, to incite religious prejudice, that Obama had been
"raised Muslim" -- and then attributed these
fabrications to political operatives in the Clinton camp.
These false claims lacked any sourcing, but that
didn't prevent the usual media miscreants from
broadcasting them, from John Gibson on Fox's
"The Big Story" and Rush Limbaugh down to
Melanie Morgan and her sidekick at San Francisco's
KSFO radio station. Just the usual modus operandi
of the noise machine -- except for that telltale
twist of smearing Clinton with responsibility for the attack.

"Tens of thousands" storm Washington DC
msnbc.msn.com
Excerpt:
Protesters energized by fresh congressional skepticism
about the Iraq war and Cheney's coming indictment
for treason, demanded a withdrawal of U.S. troops
in a demonstration Saturday that drew tens of thousands.
A sampling of celebrities, a half-dozen members
of Congress and busloads of demonstrators from distant states
joined in a spirited rally, seeing opportunity
to press their cause in a country that has turned against the war.
Rep. John Conyers, (D-Hero) threatened to use
congressional spending power to try to stop the war.
"George Bush has a habit of firing military leaders
who tell him the Iraq war is failing," he said to the masses.
"He can't fire you." Referring to Congress, the
Michigan Democrat added: "He can't fire us!"

The number of convictions overturned by DNA evidence
makes me wonder about all those convictions
where there isn't any DNA to be tested, either
because there was none at the scene or because the for
the type of crime DNA's not relevant.
The sheer number of convictions overturned makes
me wonder if there isn't a problem with the way we
determine guilt in most criminal cases.
Isn't someone wrongly convicted of armed robbery on the testimony
of a jailhouse snitch as innocent as one wrongly
convicted of rape and/or murder who is later cleared by DNA?
But there is no evidence to be examined scientifically
in the former case.
I don't have an answer. I'm just thinking
something's broken.

Don, what's broken is that we live in a getting-better-but-still racist

Subject: Troop level lies
Bart, the casualty levels and troop levels
are just another lie.
We have around 120,000 active duty troops in Iraq,
surging to 140,000. We have an unknown number
of private military contractors (PMCs)
that bump that double or even triple that number. A military census
estimates the current number of contractors in
iraq is around 100,000. By contrast, around 9200 contractors
served in Bush Oil War #1.
Now, if they admit to 100,000 ... does that mean there are really 200,000?
My father's Vietnam tour was in the Navy, he worked
in the bowels of a ship's water desalination plant.
Equivalent jobs today are often filled
by PMCs. This means that of that 120,000 there are very few
shipping dock clerks, cooks and civil engineers.
Those 120,000 are all getting shot at in the streets.
A true count of the number of troops, by
historical standards, would be at least 220,000.
We have 3,064 soldiers dead. But we have many,
many more with severe injuries -- an estimated 23,000.
This doesn't include complex and difficult to
diagnose injuries like Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and
Gulf War Syndrome (which I can assure you is
extremely fucking real).
This is 23,000 kids with arms and legs ripped
away, or parts of their skull missing.
Erik S
Eric, I think you're right.
Another horrible injury has been swept under the
rug and gets no publicity:
When these guys roll over an IED, the explosion
generally comes from below,
which means these guys who lose one or both legs
possibly lose their genitalia, as well.
That means no children, limited sex life, if at all, colostomy bags
in their wheelchairs, etc.
But Bush's mainstream whore media will wait until hundreds or thosands
more lose theirs
because the job of the media is to prop-up Bush and his failed, bloody
quagmire.

The State
of Poker
pokerplayersalliance.org
Excerpt:
Poker has come under vicious attack over the
past year. We see home and tavern poker games being
raided and charitable poker tournaments are being
shut down. We have seen the federal government's
full force efforts to curb this American tradition
from the Internet. Legislation aimed at prohibiting you
from funding your online poker accounts passed
the U.S. House this summer, then was quietly
slipped into a port security bill, literally
in the dark of night on October 13.
There are stats that show we took the Senate due
to poker.
The races in Montana and Virginia we decided
by fewer votes that, statistically,
there are poker players in those states.
There never was any reason for the "smaller government"
Republicans to get involved in this issue other
than religious insanity.
Their motto?
"If it's fun, it MUST be immoral."
And don't tell me about "Gambling disorders,"
or whatever.
As long as it's legal to buy stock or open your
own business, you're gambling.
Poker has been a tradition in America longer than
any senator has been alive.
And hell, I'll go so far as to say poker promotes
peace.
Some of the top twenty poker players are from
Israel, Lebanon, Iran, etc.
When they sit down to play - it's all fun and
everybody is accepted as an equal,
except for Phil Hellmuth - he's the greatest
player who ever lived :)
So I'm calling on the Democratic House and Senate
to right this wrong.

And I was thinking, what's really sad
is most girls out there don't know who Patty Smith is,
or Chrissie Hynde, or even Debbie Harry.
But every girl knows who Jessica Simpson is."

music history

Rumor: Zeppelin
to tour
thesun.co.uk
Excerpt:
Legendary rockers Led Zeppelin are set to re-group
after 22 years for a stadium tour.
The three surviving members, Robert Plant, Jimmy
Page and John Paul Jones,
plan to hit the road next summer with Jason Bonham
on drums.
The band are second only to the Beatles in worldwide
album sales.
They still hold records for crowds at their 1970s
concerts.
Think this will happen?
And what is "next summer?"
Is that 2007 or 2008?
- They don't need the money. I guess only McCartney has more.
- They've always refused to play under the Zep name, but with the Bonham
boy on drums...
- I may have to do some blogging from the road.

Peace Mandate
by Nat Parry January 25, 2007
consortiumnews.com
Excerpt:
While the umbrella group United for Peace &
Justice announced the call for the march just after the election,
hoping to build on the antiwar sentiment expressed
at the polls, at that time few had foreseen that George W. Bush
would dismiss out of hand the Iraq Study Group's
recommendations for withdrawal from Iraq and instead decide
to escalate the war by sending a "surge" of 21,500
troops in a last-ditch attempt to pacify Baghdad.
Since his announcement, Bush has suffered an unprecedented
backlash from members of his own party,
who until now have granted him carte blanche
to conduct the war however he chooses.
Many Republicans in Congress have joined their
Democratic counterparts in opposing the plan,
even if they have had difficulty agreeing on
the precise language of the congressional anti-surge resolution.
