New Yorker
Mag Slurs Obamas
Notice the Osama poster on the wall
Link
Excerpt:
Who knows if they'll get this in Dubuque, but
they sure aren't going to like it in Chicago:
This week's New Yorker cover features an image
of Michelle and Barack Obama that
combines every smeary right-wing stereotype imaginable:
An image of Obama in a turban
and robes fist-bumping his be-afro'd wife, dressed
in the military fatigues of a revolutionary
and packing a machine gun and some serious ammo.
Oh yes, this quaint little scene takes
place in the Oval Office, under a picture of
Osama bin Laden above a roaring fireplace,
in which burns an American flag. All that's missing
is a token sprig of arugula.
The slur toon is called "The Politics of Fear"
and, according to the NYer press release,
"satirizes the use of scare tactics and misinformation
in the Obama campaign." Uh-huh.
What's that they say about repeating a rumor?
.
They knew such an unfair and inflammatory toon
would get them publicity.
I used to think the New Yorker was above shit
like that - shame on me.

Subject: angry with Obama
Bart,
I was going to do as you suggested and hold my
nose and vote Obama.
But I just can't get past this latest sell-out.
Here's what I sent his campaign:
Senator Obama speaks repeatedly of "change",
but he votes along Republican Party lines to pass
the FISA Amendments Act, which continues to
trample and violate our 4th Amendment rights?
If I can't trust him to protect Americans'
most fundamental (Constitutional) rights, why should I
trust him to do anything else? His vote to
grant retroactive immunity to the telecom giants who
caved to pressure from the current administration
gives me the choice of Bush, Jr. or Bush Lite.
Perhaps the good Senator should choose Joe
Lieberman as his running mate; they seem cut from
the same proverbial cloth. I notice, by the
way, that Hillary voted AGAINST the FISA Act.
Please thank the Senator for saving me the
gas of driving to vote on November 4.
Keep swinging the hammer.
Jay
Jay, your logic is peccable.
That FISA vote might be the last super-stupid thing Obama does for a
while
but Bush-puppet McCain has stupid decisions lined up from here till
2013.
Failing to vote for Obama is a vote for for more years of Bush.
Could you live with yourself - knowing you helped those bastards?

McCain's
10 Biggest Gaffes this week
Link
Excerpt:
This is the week that should have effectively
ended McCain's chances, but you wouldn't know it
if you watched any of the mainstream media outlets
or followed political reporting in the major newspapers.
During this past week: McCain called the most
important entitlement program in the U.S. a disgrace, his top
economic adviser called the American people whiners,
McCain released an economic plan that no one thought
was serious, he flip flopped on Iraq, joked about
the deaths of Iranian citizens, and denied making comments
that he clearly made --- TWICE. Yet watching
and reading the mainstream press you would think McCain
was having a pretty decent political week, I
mean at least Jesse Jackson didn't say anything about him.
No matter how many lies he tells, no matter how many flip-flops he does,
the whore media will STILL call him "the brave
and honest, straight-talking Maverick
who hung on the cross for five years to save
us all from the fires of eternal damnation."
BTW, when Wes Clark said, "Getting captured
and held for 5 years does not necessarily
qualify someone to be president," he
got pummelled by Obama, the right and the whore media
which got me to thinking - Maybe we should run
Ingrid
Betancourt for president.
She is a year more qualified than McCain.

Bart,
I'm confused about all the outrage coming from
the left about Obama's alleged
shifting to the right. Sure, I'm outraged
that he and other Democrats caved in on
the FISA bill, but for Obama it was obviously
a political choice.
The bill was going to pass by a large margin.
Why hand the Republicans another talking point?

Heavy rain, lightning and winds brought the ’80s

Is Gene Lyons the best or what?
Link
Excerpt:
An amusing aspect of this contest is watching
both candidates maneuver to place themselves
above criticism, as willing media acolytes invent
helpful storylines. At every opportunity, Obama's
campaign hints that any/all criticism of the
Democratic candidate is by definition racist.
McCain emphasizes his manly refusal to trade on
his Vietnam War heroism. No braggart soldier he,
the straight-talking maverick reminds us daily.
Far be it from him to mention his five years in a POW camp,
McCain boasts modestly. Meanwhile, his campaign
staff portrays every disagreement about foreign policy
as mocking the candidate's valiant sacrifice.
Every Gene Lyons column should be read in its entirety. It's tough for
me
to select an excerpt because every sentence from Lyons is pure gold.

Tony Snow
defended Bush lies
He volunteered to help mislead America
Link
Excerpt:
During his 16 months at the White House, Snow
used the skills he had honed as a Fox News whore
to become one of the strongest liars for an administration
whose policies were losing popularity.
"It was a joy to watch Tony spin lies at the podium
each day," Bush said.
Snow arrived at a turbulent time in the Bush White
House, in the wake of the president's failed campaign
to steal Social Security and as Bush was struggling
to defend his bloody quagmire in Iraq. He was a mirror
image of his predecessor, Scotty the Underbear,
who refused to answer legitimate questions by sticking
closely to talking points and often appeared
uncomfortable when journalists begged for steno notes.
At FOX Whore News, Snow offered biting criticism
of Bush, calling him "impotent" as a leader and
"something of an embarrassment" for conservatives.
But by the time he reached the White House,
Snow had turned full-blown whore and became a
star in the conservative movement. In the lead-up
to the 2006 elections, the GOP was looking for
a soulless mouthpiece who could excite the party base.
"He was tailor-made for that job at that time,"
said ABC's Ann Compton. "He was such a whore,"
You could say Fleischer and Scotty the
Underbear were duped into lying,
but you can't say that about Tony Snow.
He volunteered to lie for the sons of bitches,
knowing full well that thousands of soliders
were dying to make the oil bastards richer.

KBR Electrocuting
soldiers
It's "not their job" to wire things correctly
Link
Excerpt:
Cheney's multi-billion dollar contractor KBR
was steeped in another scandal Friday as lawmakers,
families and experts accused it of recklessly
causing the electrocution deaths of US soldiers.
"While I had always been prepared to hear that
one of my sons died by way of a firefight or
a roadside bomb, I was dumbstruck to hear that
my son was electrocuted while taking a shower
in his living quarters," said Cheryl Harris,
mother of Ryan Maseth, who died in January.
Maseth's "burnt and smoldering" body was found
under still-running, electrically charged water.
KBR was contracted to maintain facilities at the
base and had been informed of electrical problems
in the building where Maseth died. But,
said Harris, KBR showed "extreme recklessness and a total
disregard for public safety" by failing to fix
the problem as well as others that have caused at least 13
electrocution deaths among soldiers and civilian
contract workers in Iraq.
How long have I been talking about "non-performance"
contracts?
They get paid either way, so why bother to do
the job right?
If I was a crooked KBR bastard, I could hire Danny Detroit, Eddy the
Pillar, Scott Turner, Vermont Neil,
Pauline in Hayward and a hundred other non-electricians for $100,000
a month to go to Iraq and fake-wire
a bunch of building for the army, collect the money and go home and
leave those soldiers to die.
They get paid if they do the job
or not, so why do the job?
All they're doing is stealing money from the Treasuiry.
They don't care about the war or the soldiers or anything else.
To them, it's just another bank heist to add to their mountain of gold.
"Complaining again, Bart? Get off Bush's back!"

reader Matt with Russ Feingold
Subject: Who voted with Bush?
Obama voted with Bush, Bartcop. Not that you were
asking a rhetorical question there...
The headline was Hillary
Votes No on FISA, Obama Votes Yes
which seemed a little inflammatory, so I watered
it down for party unity's sake.
Do you think he is a Trojan horse for the right,
or do you think he is gaining leverage?
I think he did the exact same thing Hillary did.
After a year of accusing her of being "more of
the same," he did exactly that.
He became what he accused her of becoming.
Some call that lying and cheating - I call it
politics.
Is he a deer in the headlights?
If he thinks he's a dead deer, then why wouldn't
he vote against the FISA bill?
I can't read his mind, but I assume he voted for
it to appear "tough" on terror.
I mean that. He is a very pragmatic dude, which
is to say he sees the REAL world,
not the conservative world. What is the effective
result of having telecoms litigate?
You're asking why criminals should be punished?
I'd say because they broke the law.
But worse than that, FISA gutted the Fourth Amendment.
When I asked,
> Is there anything in that FISA bill that makes it legal for the
Bush bastards
> to put microphones and cameras inside our homes?
...I wasn't kidding.
I don't have the time or the brains to read some
400-page law, but I'll bet
that it's
now perfectly legal for the Bush bastards
to spy
on us inside our homes, for Christ's sake.
I think Feingold agrees with me.
"FISA is not a compromise; it is a capitulation.
This bill effectively guarantees immunity
for telecom companies alleged to have
participated in the president's illegal program,
and which fails to protect
the privacy of law-abiding Americans AT
HOME.
Allowing courts to review the question
of immunity is meaningless when the same
legislation essentially requires the
court to grant immunity."
-- Russ Feingold, Link
Did he mean
to say "AT HOME?"
Is it now
legal for the Bush bastards to bug our homes?
"Stop complaining
Bart - you should trust President Bush!!"
I would love to see the squirm and testimony of
corporate infotel execs as they talked
about tough decisions and patriotism. It would
be a long squirm. I wonder what else
would be happening as we enjoyed it.
I'm not sure what you meant, but did the telecoms
have a choice?
The one Quest guy who refused was charged with crimes for not playing ball.
The Bush bastards "negotiate" like Vito Corleone:
"Either your brains or your signature will
be on that contract."
Get a grip, progressives. All is not lost if the
various telecoms don't have to spend
billions of dollars litigating for the next thirty
years while we smack our lips in anticipation.
I'd like to add this link:
http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/07/11/can_progressives_unite_or_will/
By the way, can we chalk this up as a pro-Obama
email?
John B
Sure, but are you agreeing that we don't need a Fourth Amendment?
When Clinton was president, the GOP said we all needed guns for when
the out-of-control
federal government tries to take away our rights. Remember when G.
Gordon Liddy said,
"Shoot them in the head because the feds wear
bullet-proof vests?"
Since Der Fuhrer stole power, the GOP (and our pussy Democrats) say
we should give up our rights and trust the Bush bastards to be nice
to us.

Newsweek:
McCain Pulls Even
They say Obama's flip-flops have cost him
Link
Excerpt:
A month after winning the primary, some of
Obama's glow may be fading. In the latest NEWSWEEK Poll,
he leads McCain by just 3 percentage points,
44 to 41. The statistical dead heat is a marked change from
last month's NEWSWEEK Poll, where Obama led McCain
by 15 points, 51 percent to 36 percent.
Obama's rapid drop comes at a strategically challenging
moment for him. Having vanquished Hillary in early June,
Obama quickly went about repositioning himself
for a general-election audience--an unpleasant task for any
nominee and particularly for a candidate who
guaranteed his followers that he was a "different kinmd of candidate."
Obama's reversal on FISA, faith-based initiatives
and opting out of the campaign public-financing system left him
open to charges he was a flip-flopper.
In the new poll, 53
percent believe he changed his positions on key issues.
I would have expected Obama to slowly nuance his way toward the center.
Instead, he lurched with all the grace of Otis Campbell enetering the
Mayberry jail.
