against powerful opposition from within the administration

group of determined men and women thwarted international
and American law; fought off powerful
challenges from colleagues within the Justice
Department, the State Department, the National Security
Council and the C.I.A.; ignored or circumvented
Supreme Court rulings and Congressional resolutions;
and blithely dismissed a growing clamor of outrage
and contempt from much of the world - all in the
service of preserving their ability to use extreme
forms of torture in the search for usable intelligence.

Subject: American Consumers bring Oil Down - not Drilling
American consumers are bringing down the price
of gas by lowering demand.
We have started driving less, driving slower,
airing up our tires, tuning our engines,
and buying cars that get better gas mileage.
And we're doing it without drilling for more oil.
America has very little oil left so even
if we drilled every drop as the Republicans want
it does nothing to solve the problem that we
are running out of oil and that oil is warming up
the planet. The real solution is to stop using
oil, not drilling for more.
If we really want to get out from under the thumb
of big oil we need to stop buying their products.
Oil is going away. We have no choice but to find
something else and find it now.

I'm not sure Keith was trying to attack Obama.
Keith is an Oklahoma Democrat, which would be, in most states, a Republican,
but I think
he's saying Obama displays none of the negative stereotypes that whites
sometimes see in Blacks.
He speaks very well, he's very well-educated, he dresses like a president
of a company,
he doesn't use black slang and he doesn't wear his pants below his
waist and he wears a shirt, etc.
Put another way, if Obama acted and dressed this way in high school,
he probably got some
criticism for "acting white," and perhaps his good grades made him
seem "white" to some Blacks.
Put still another way, if Obama spoke, dressed and acted like Tracy Morgan...
I doubt he'd be the Democrat's nominee this summer - who can argue with that?
I'm just saying it IS possible to make a racial observation without
it being an attack.

The blame for this neutering of fiscal policy
lies squarely with the Bush administration. At the start
of this decade, the budget stood in surplus to
the tune of 2.4 per cent of GDP. This year's actual
deficit of 3 per cent of GDP therefore represents
a worsening of more than 7 per cent of GDP,
or roughly $1,000bn. Almost all of this deterioration
is due to policy: to tax cuts, spending increases,
and their associated debt-service costs.
That projected surplus was a priceless gift to
the White House. It offered the Bush bastards ample
scope for outlays on homeland security and other
unforeseen priorities, and moderate tax cuts as well,
all within a budget balanced over the course
of the business cycle. Instead, the administration knowingly
opted for outrageous fiscal excess - adding insult
to injury with its phoney tax-cut sunset provisions,
designed for no other purpose than to disguise
the long-term fiscal implications. Eight years on,
this record of fiscal irresponsibility has all
but taken fiscal policy off the table as an available
response to the slowdown.
The US economy had better have luck on its side.
Luck is about all it has left.

A new book by Ron Suskind says that the White
House ordered the CIA to forge
a back-dated, handwritten letter from the head
of Iraqi intelligence to Saddam Hussein.
Suskind writes in "The Way of the World," to be
published Tuesday, that the alleged forgery
- adamantly denied by the White House as you'd
expect - was designed to portray a false link
between Saddam's regime and al Qaeda as a justification
for the Iraq war.
The author also claims that the Bush bastards
had information from a top Iraqi intelligence official
"that there were no WMDs in Iraq - intelligence
they received in plenty of time to stop an invasion."
The letter's existence has been reported before,
and it had been written about as if it were genuine.
It was passed in Baghdad to a reporter for The
London Sunday Telegraph who wrote about it on
the front page of Dec. 14, 2003, under the headline,
"Terrorist behind 9-11 'was trained by Saddam.'"

One small gripe: having done crosswords all
my life, I have yet to find one that accepts
spaces or punctuation (hyphens) as legitimate.
If there is to be a hyphen in the answer,
the clue provides ______-______. if there is
to be a space, it is understood that it is
in between the two words in the answer and does
not take up one of the precious squares.
Love 'em, but get annoyed when I lose because
