"This president's instincts are right. I really
do like him. I have nothing but admiration. I would
like to make him as successful as he wants to be....within
reason."
-- Lindsay Graham (SC-Regressive), Link
Funny how those last two words negated everything else he said.
Excerpt: A few minor muffs aside, the speech was well-written
and well-delivered, public communications skills being an
essential but often underrated ingredient in
political leadership in the 24-hour news cycle. It was a skill the little
boy Bush
never worked to master. His eyes jerked from
one TelePrompter to the other, fearful of missing a word, and sending
accidental signals of insincerity and not knowing
his material: I'm reading this word for word.
Obama read his lines word for word too. But he
did so flawlessly, turning his head smoothly side...to side, all the while
reading off the TelePrompter but allowing his
adoring congressional majority and many others to totally forget it...
Compared to all those ambitious ambitions and
ideas, poor, not-so-old Bobby Jindal was toast before he walked down
that lonely hallway in the governor's residence
in Baton Rouge as the Republican responder. It was a hopeless assignment
even if the personable, popular 37-year-old wasn't
a rookie on the national stage.
When will the PR handlers of these responders
-- whatever their party -- realize that coming from an historic, effusive,
applauding Capitol Hill gang to one guy/gal talking
alone to a staring camera and a gaggle of bored TV technicians
earning evening overtime doesn't work?
"Ballots that Norm Coleman wants to count took
a beating in testimony on Tuesday, while ballots he thinks are illegal
were protected by the judges hearing the U.S. Senate trial," -- Political Wire,
Link
I have one good thing to say about that Norm Coleman prick - he's
no quitter.
Most Democrats (not saying anything about Franken) would've surrendered
Election night.
That said, it's time for Coleman to accept the facts and move
to FOX News.
After eight years of mangled words and crude expression,
how refreshing was it to witness a president
who was quite the opposite? Last night Obama
was inspiring, not insipid, direct and yet not threatening,
forceful while still conveying gentle optimism
and encouraging words of hope. Compared to what we had
it was like air conditioning on a 100-degree,
humid day. To not see the scowl of Cheney in the background
or to hear the many references to war, terror,
enemies. It was wonderful.
The moment that was most revealing -- in a disturbing
way -- was when Obama said "America does not torture."
It was an eerie moment with the sense that everyone
in the chamber knew that over the last several years we did
exactly that, tortured, despite Bush/Cheney's
denials and wordplay around the matter. It was an unspoken,
accepted belief in the room that we had tortured
and after Obama spoke those words, everyone rose to their feet
and clapped, acknowledging that a shameful period
of time had finally passed, but recognizing also that crimes
were committed and nothing was or has been done.
Really sad.

Excerpt: A California state assemblyman from San Francisco
has introduced legislation that would legalise and tax marijuana,
a move he hopes will help shore up the state's
dire finances.
The bill by San Francisco representative Tom Ammiano,
would legalise the cultivation, possession and sale of marijuana
by people 21 and older. It would charge growers
and wholesalers a $5,000 (£3,400) initial franchise fee and a $2,500
annual renewal fee, and would levy a $50 per
ounce fee on retailers.
The law, which would make California the first
state to legalise marijuana, would inject an estimated $13bn a year in
revenue into California's empty coffers. Governor
Arnold Schwarzenegger on Friday signed a $130bn budget that
raises sales and income taxes, and dramatically
slashes spending. States across the country are facing massive revenue
shortfalls, as income and real estate tax receipts.
It's the biggest cash crop in the state.
Repeat: It's the biggest cash crop in the state. I heard yesterday California pot brings in more cash than the next
4-5 crops combined.
You could legalize it and tax it and make tons of cash for the state
OR you could keep it illegal and let the street gangs make all that money.
Did alcohol prohibition not teach us anything?
How much longer should we let the religiously insane set policy?
Excerpt: Tennessee and Georgia may turn down some of the
economic stimulus money if the restrictions
outlined in the package cause budgetary hardship
in the future, the governors said Monday.
After meeting with Obama, Tennessee Gov. Phil
Bredesen (D) said some provisions in the package
would force states to expand their programs permanently,
even though the stimulus funding only lasts for two years.
"We are evaluating this piece of money, whether
it makes sense for us to take it,” he said.
'We may well be one of the states that say we
can’t take on that portion of it.'"
This reminds me of North Korea - rejecting offers
of food.
If the GOP wants to go Kim Jung Il on them, the
voters might remember that in 2010.
And why is Bredesen, a Democrat, stabbing his
president in the back? Because he's a Democrat, that's why!!
There are people out there who don't think that
people making over $250,000 a year are rich.
That's over $20,000 a month. That's like a person
who works 40 hours a week making $120/hour.
Most people making over $250,000 a year don't
pay as high of a tax rate as the working class
because a lot of their money comes from investments
and capital gains that are taxed at a lower rate.
I think the rich should pay their fair share
and $250,000 is definitely rich.
Although the rich are hurting too in this economy
they aren't hurting as bad as minimum wage earners.
The people who make less than $250,000 a year
won this election and it's our turn to get a break.
"He smartly plans to ignore the media's fetishistic
obsession with how he balances optimism and realism. If Republicans weren't sufficiently worried
about the size and reach of Obama's megaphone before Tuesday night, they should ramp up their concern now...Obama
truly believes he is at the beginning of four-year teaching moment for the American people – and that his students
are mature enough and interested enough to actually learn. The man can give a heck of a speech – and
has a close to perfect record of delivering at big moments." -- Mark Halperin

Excerpt: Frankly, I was afraid something like this might
happen.
Attorney General Eric Holder thinks we're "a nation
of cowards" if we don't want to sit around talking about race all day.
In a speech marking Black History Month, he told
Justice Department employees, "If we're going to ever make progress,
we're going to have to have the guts. We have
to have the determination, to be honest with each other. It also means
we
have to be able to accept criticism where that
is justified."
Very well then, to be perfectly honest, I think
President Obama's election and Holder's own confirmation as the nation's
first African American attorney general indicate
great progress. So how about we give racism a rest for a while? Personally,
I'd rather hear Holder's plans for restoring
the rule of law after the Bush administration's ransacking of the U.S.
Constitution

Greetings from NJ.
Longtime reader of your site here and I just
want to say thank you for giving me some much needed
laughter during the darkest days of the AWOL
Cokesnorter’s eight year debacle. Last episode’s picture
of the GOP public bathroom sign made me laugh
and also inspired me to email this story…
Over these eight years I’ve done virtual battle
with brainwashed Foxbots.
We've come up with an effective method of dealing
with these flying monkey neocon posters who haunt
our political message boards. Instead of trying
to reason with them or refute their insanity, we fire back
various Larry Craig posts at them in rapid succession
and without pause to address any of their nonsense.
They don’t seem to know how to react to this.
I guess Rush hasn’t devised a talking point to minimize
the impact of a homophobic rightwing GOP moralist
getting caught looking for man-love in a public toilet!
Thanks again and keep hammering away!

PS. Free Larry Craig! End public toilet entrapment!
"There are two models that Republicans are
looking at. One is 1990, when Herbert Herbert Bush got together with the Democrats at
Andrews Air Force Base, raised taxes and lost the next election. The other is 1993, Democrats tried
to reform healthcare. Republicans voted no and regained the House and Senate."
-- Grover Norquist, who is famous for this quote:
But Grover, 1993 only worked out for you because the yellow,
backstabbing Democrats agreed that the Clintons were out-of-control Stalinists and
needed to be reigned in.
Now, instead of health care being 1/7 of the economy, it's 1/5.
I know - let's wait another 15 years so it'll be every third dollar!!!!

Excerpt: Theda Skopcol said "In such marked contrast to
the timid triangulation of Clinton, Obama offers a strong,
positive statement of the role of U.S. government
in national development, past and for the future. Government
does not "substitute" for business or individual
action, but it is an essential 'catalyst.'"
From Obama's speech: "As soon as I took office,
I asked this Congress to send me a recovery plan that would
put people back to work and put money in their
pockets, not because I believe in bigger government -- I don't
-- not because I'm not mindful of the massive
debt we've inherited -- I am..."
I say this not in criticism of Obama, but in criticism
of Skopcol's blind hatred of Bill Clinton. What Obama said
in his speech last night is he is LIKE Bill Clinton,
but the circumstances we face require bigger government.
And of course, Obama is right.
But there's money to be made by mindlessly carping at the Clintons.
Excerpt: TMZ broke the story that Northern Trust of Chicago,
which got $1.5 billion in bailout money and then laid off 450 workers,
flew hundreds of clients and employees to Los
Angeles last week and treated them to four days of posh hotel rooms, salmon
and
filet mignon, concerts, a PGA golf tournament
at the Riviera Country Club with Mercedes shuttle rides and Tiffany swag
bags...
I would ask Northern No Trust: If you’re totally
solvent, why are you taking my tax dollars?
If you’re not totally solvent, why are you giving
my tax dollars to Sheryl Crow?
Coming in a moment when skeptical and angry Americans
watched A.I.G., Citigroup, General Motors and Chrysler - firms that
had already been given a federal steroid injection
- get back in line for more billions, the golf scandal was just one more
sign that
the bailed-out rich are different from you and
me: their appetites are unquenchable and their culture is uneducable.
Obama served them notice on Tuesday night in his
Congressional address, saying: 'This time, C.E.O.’s won’t be able to use
taxpayer money to pad their paychecks or buy
fancy drapes or disappear on a private jet. Those days are over.'"

Excerpt: Limbaugh brought up this poll yesterday on his
hate radio show, noting that women hate him.
His solution? To convene a summit of women to
find out why:
"We’ll perhaps devote an hour in an upcoming
program to calls only from women. I want some of these women to start telling
me what it is I must do to make them stop hating me. I own the men, and what must I do now to own
women?" .
Hey, Pigboy - there are lots of reasons why women hate you.
There's also lots of reason why you can't keep a women in your bed

Maybe it's because you're a vulgar and racist piece of shit?
Maybe it's because you talk about "owning" women?

Dude... I don't see anything racist in this misguided

Insubordinate, definitely. Racist, no... Unless
you consider his use of 'Hussein' to be so.
In that case, you are falling into that 'mind

No one really knows with any certainty why he

Excerpt: Patrick Leahy is quietly preparing plans to investigate
allegations of torture under Bush.
The Senate Rubberstamp Committee could announce
a hearing to consider plans to probe allegations
of torture as early as today, according to Salon,
citing Sen Rubberstamp and members of his staff.
Leahy's office told Raw Story Wednesday morning
that a press release would be sent out shortly.
"We're going to investigate!"
Wait, if you're going to do a cover-up, handjob whitewash,
how do you not invite Lee Hamilton to chair the crooked

If anything happens at all, look for Senator Rubberstamp to offer immunity

but even then, the bastards will lie and Leahy will rubberstamp those
lies and now we're done here.
