Cheney Memo Cover-Up?

Who in the Bush White House tried to shred a
memo challenging the use of torture?
On April 21, Philip Zelikow, who was counselor
to Kinda Sleazy Rice, revealed on Foreign Policy's
"Shadow Government" blog that he wrote a memo
in 2005 disputing the conclusions of Bush Justice
Department lawyers that torture was legal. The
existence of such a memo was a surprise. But Zelikow
also disclosed that the "White House attempted
to collect and destroy all copies of my memo."
This story is not over.
Zelikow says he doesn't know for sure who in
the White House ordered the suppression of his memo,
but he says that his "supposition at the time"
was that Cheney's office was behind the cover-up.

Subject: Prosecute those involved in torture
I see stories in the news about who in the Bush
administration will NOT be prosecuted for torture while
each day we learn more and more about what happened.
We do not yet know who did what, and we need
to at least figure out what happened before we
make any decisions about prosecuttion.
Torture is a serious matter. Torture defines who
we are as a people and as a nation.
We hold ourselves out as a nation of laws. Yet
if we try to cover up what happened and we fail
to prosecute those who committed crimes amounting
to Treason to the Constitution, we send a
message to the world that our position on torture
is dishonest.
It is important that America show the world that
we take the issue of torture seriously enough to at least
find out what happened and that our laws of the
United States apply to everyone, including the President.

I use it to stream progressive talk - Stephanie Miller in the morning,

2. "Pandora" and "Slacker" are both
cool, free streaming radio apps that let you pick your favorite bands,
and then plays
random tunes (with cover art) that the app determines are of the
same genre as the band!
If you choose
"Garbage" for example, it will play random Garbage tunes, but will
throw in maybe Poe, Tori Amos,
Hole, and other
alt-rock (particularly female-fronted). You can put in any
band, and the app will surprise you
with random tunes
from "like" artists.
3. iStayFit is great. It is fitness
app that lets you keep track of workout progress. I like it
cuz I don't have to
walk around the gym with a
notebook and pencil like a douchebag. It was about $5 and is packed
with useful features.
The iPhone rocks.
I'm not one to spend cash on "cool" gadgets,
but the iPhone just works and make life easier.

A simple fact is being overlooked in the Bush-era
torture scandal: the number of cases in which detainees have been tortured
to death.
Abuse did not only involve the high-profile cases
of smashing detainees into plywood barriers (“walling”), confinement in
coffin-like boxes
with insects, sleep deprivation, cold, and waterboarding.
To date approximately 100 detainees, including CIA-held detainees, have
died
during U.S. interrogations, and some are known
to have been tortured to death.
The bottom line is that many detainee homicides
in Iraq and Afghanistan were the direct result of approval and orders from
the highest
levels of government are accomplices. A
review of homicide cases, however, shows that few detainee deaths have
been properly investigated.
Many were not investigated at all. And no official
investigation has looked into the connection between detainee deaths and
the interrogation
policies promulgated by the Bush administration...
In February 2006, a review by Human Rights First
determined that almost 100 detainees died in U.S. custody in Afghanistan
and Iraq
as of 2005, and that almost half of the cases
were clearly homicides. Several cases discussed in the report were clear
cases of torture homicides.

The figure I heard was 120 or 128, but we'll never know because Bush
made it illegal to ask.

week in a sex abuse lawsuit against the Seattle Catholic Archdiocese.
In court papers, four men claim they were sexually
assaulted by Patrick O'Donnell, a former Spokane priest.
Former Seattle Archbishop Raymond Hunthausen
is named in the suit, among other church officials who supervised O'Donnell.
Spending most of his 26-year tenure as a priest
in Spokane, O'Donnell served as a parish priest in Seattle between 1976
and 1978.
He came to that post, according to the plaintiffs,
after church officials learned he had been sexually abusing boys in Spokane.
The plaintiffs argue that, on hearing of the assaults
from O'Donnell's supervisors, Hunthausen directed him to sex predator treatment.
Still, Hunthausen restored O'Donnell's credentials
six weeks after he arrived in Seattle and he started raping again.
This is the pattern that continues to this day.
