Bart,
I am seeing a secondary effect after the Scalia Court's decision to allow political advertising by our Corporate Overlords. Under Federal law, broadcasters must give politicians their lowest advertising rate if the candidate's voice appears in the ad. This law keeps broadcasters busy during election season but doesn't tend to maximize profits. Because they aren't (openly) sponsored by a candidate, these (strictly Republican) political ads by our Corporate Masters don't qualify for this minimum rate. This gives broadcasters a profit motive to encourage political controversy and directly improve their own bottom line. Of course, many broadcasters have done this for years to improve ratings, but that profit is more indirect. Right now broadcasters are really cleaning up! And here in Seattle, at least two TV stations are flogging our Senate and House races beyond any reasonable justification by concentrating on polls that show a tight Senate race and ignore polls that show a Democrat in the lead. Here. we are debating whether Senator Patty Murray will beat her greaseball opponent by single digits or double digits. But you would never know that by watching Seattle television. Best regards, HWD in Duckabush WA Quotes "The Tea Party cannot be claimed as credit by anybody. Nobody can say, "I am the Tea Party." Nobody can say, "I started the Tea Party." Nobody can say, "I saw the Tea Party coming, and I steered it." Nobody who makes a living generating political support, generating political donations, nobody in that business can point to the Tea Party and say, "I did it." So it's a threat." -- the vulgar Pigboy, on why the Teabaggers are a threat to the GOP, Link Send e-mail to Bart Subject:
thought crimes
Bart, On Richard Cohen's "thought crimes," here is the point that argument doesn't consider: Our laws, rules and practices are designed to protect those that are especially vulnerable to crime. I think a good parallel would be laws we have to protect children. We have special laws and extra fines for drug dealers who are near schools, because our society has decided that peddling drugs to kids is worse than peddling drugs in general. Or how about laws that protect abused women? Most cops lock up suspected wife-beaters even if wives refuse to press charges, something we do only in that siutation to protect a "special" kind of victim. How about those doubled traffic fines for speeding in a work zone, or for not moving over for a disabled vehicle? So I see "hate crimes" against gays and other minority groups the same way. When a class of people is in particular danger of being victim through no fault of their own - whether it's because they're gay, an abused woman or a 6-year-old, we take extra care to protect them. But the Cohens of the world only bitch about the laws that protect gays and coloreds. Wonder why that is? Andy Andy - I agree - thanks. Quotes "When it comes to voting, when we only have two choices, you got to grow up and realize there's a big difference between a disappointing friend and a deadly enemy. Of course the Democrats are disappointing. That's what makes them Democrats. If they were any more frustrating they'd be your relatives. But in this country they are all that stands between you and darkest night. You know why their symbol is the letter 'D'? Because it's a grade that means good enough, but just barely. You know why the Republican symbol is 'R'? Because it's the noise a pirate makes when he robs you and feeds you to a shark." -- Bill Maher, Link Subject: Pop up ads

In this land where babies are brought by storks and buildings collapse due to unpatriotic bricks, we need the gadfly because no leader, preacher, guru, or saint will wake us up, though the Doomsday clock is ticking close to twelve.”— David Ray, American poet, author of “The Endless Search” and “The Death of Sardanapalus and Other Poems of the Iraq Wars” Look for bartcop Note: If you sign up,

e-mail to BartAs we get closer to election day the Democrats are pulling ahead of Republicans. I think as people get closer to actually voting people are looking at the Republicans and realizing the Republicans aren't going to solve Americas problems. Republican haven't learned a thing from the last two elections. In fact the Republicans have gotten worse. They not only want to go back to the Bush policies, they want to do things like eliminate Social Security and Medicare. And these new Tea Party Republicans are just plain crazy and crazy people don't tend to solve complex problems. What people are remembering is that we used to have a surplus under President Clinton and it's the Democrats who are the ones who are fiscally conservative. They remember it took Clinton 5 years to turn the economy around. I think the voters are coming to the conclusion that they are going to stay the course and give the Democrats more time to fix what the Republicans destroyed.
