Send e-mail to Bart I say we let them leave Link Texas is irrevocably linked economically, socially and legally with the United States. The online seceaion petition requests that President Obama "peacefully grant" Texas permission to withdraw from the Union. Setting aside the fact that far more than 116,000 Texans might like to have a say in the matter, what would a serious federal response be? Let's say it's something like, "OK, y'all go ahead." Isn't that likely to be followed by a "But..."? Isn't that "But..." likely to cost Texas a lot of money? For example, isn't the Army likely to leave Fort Hood? There go more than 50,000 active-duty men and women, 9,000 civilian jobs and an economic impact that Comptroller Susan Combs has estimated at $10.9 billion a year. Say goodbye to Killeen and some other Texas towns. Multiply that impact by 14 other military installations in Texas, none as big but all important to their local economies. Won't the U.S., before peacefully granting this petition, want to be repaid for some portion of the massive federal investment in Texas? Send e-mail to Bart Jeb Bush in 2016? Another Clinton-Bush Contest Possible Link When Bill Clinton rolled through Florida while campaigning for Obama, he speculated about Jeb Bush's intentions with Ana Navarro, a Republican strategist and friend of Mr. Bush. It was no idle topic for Clinton, given the possibility that Hillary could seek the Democratic nomination. When Teabagger-fave Marco Rubio held a strategy session here to discuss his own political future last week, the Jeb question hung over the room; a decision by Jeb, 59, to seek the Republican nomination would almost certainly halt any plans by Mister Teabagger, 41, to do so or abruptly set off a new intraparty feud. Mr. Bush is said to be weighing financial and family considerations -- between so many years in office and the recession his brother caused, Jeb's wealth took a dip, they said, and he has been working hard to restore it -- as well as the complicated place within the Republican Party of the Bush brand. The GOP is in a pickle. Do they go with the sane former governor with the super-tarnished name? Do they go with the inexperienced Mister Teabagger, who would energize the base, but then bring that same insanity that turned off so many voters this year? Send e-mail to Bart Subject: Susan Rice would make a great Secretary of State I am now convinced that Susan Rice would make a great Secretary of State because Republicans like John McCain want very much to stop her nomination. Anyone who the Republicans are that much against must be highly qualified for the job. McCain needs to focus on what's good for America rather than his personal grudges over losing to Obama. Marc Perkel Send e-mail to Bart How Obama Won by James Carville Link Two weeks after Obama kicked Thurston's ass, political analysts are just beginning to assess the surprising scope of his victory. Rolling Stone turned to James Carville for answers. Carville traced Romney's collapse to the reactionary posturing required by the GOP primaries, and underscored the strategic blunders like the Clint Eastwood debacle. "You can't control what happens in a debate," Carville says. "But you do get to control your convention - and they didn't control that." Carville marvels that Romney entrusted his campaign to second-rate crony consultants who were so divorced from reality that they had him convinced to the bitter end that victory was all but assured. And looking to the future, Carville predicts that America could face a surprising role reversal in 2016: Democratic voters are likely to behave like the GOP base and fall into line behind a pre-anointed candidate, while Republicans will be forced to embrace a centrist agent of change. Carville is right. Once you announce, "I'm a severe conservative" in the primaries, it's hard to then say, "I'm just a normal housewife like you" later in the general. But the Pigboys of the world won't let the select a centrist. Should be easy pickings for a united Democratic party. Send e-mail to Bart Subject: Obama's three dimensional chess Obama's plan worked to perfection. After the first debate, all the GOP dark money went "all in" on Romney. They spent over $100 million in the month of October. They thought they were going to win until the very last few days. Hell, some of them thought they were going to win right up to the election. That was $100 million that DIDN'T go into the Senate races. Do you really think that if the GOP had spent $100M on the Senate races we would have picked up Elizabeth Warren (who they hate more than Obama, and who spent a total of $26M in Massachusetts) and openly gay Tammy Baldwin (who spent a total of $11M in Wisconsin)? No way. $100 million swamps both of those races. But now that they blew all that cash on Romney, we have the most liberal majority in the senate in the past three decades, and all of Obama's Supreme Court picks get confirmed. Obama is the smartest politician since FDR. The economic recovery is already baked into the economy, and the Democrats are going to get credit for it. The next Democrat to run for President in 4 years is going to have full employment, rising income, falling debt (or dare I say it, surpluses) and BOTH Clinton and Obama stumping for him/her, while the Repubs will have, what, W? The decider? bwahahahaha. Are you looking forward to that? We are going to hold the White House and the Senate for the next 8-12 years. We will have a liberal Supreme Court, hand picked by Obama and his successor, probably for the rest of both of our lives. This was a HUGE win. Gay-bashing Thumper Arrested SHE is into producing kiddie porn Link A New Hampshire lawyer associated with an anti-gay Christian defense group was arrested on federal child pornography charges after allegedly taking a teenager to Canada where she reportedly convinced the girl to engage in sexual activity and let it be filmed. Lisa Biron, a Manchester, N.H., lawyer associated with the Christian litigation group, Alliance Defending Freedom, was arrested by FBI agents on Friday morning on charges of transportation with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity, possession of child pornography and five counts of sexual exploitation of children, according to the Concord Monitor. Feds said Biron transported a teen girl from Manchester to Ontario, Canada, on May 25 and coerced her into engaging in sexual acts with another person that were then recorded. Police said the videos and photos on Biron's computer depicted a teen girl. Feds were alerted when police determined the porn was manufactured out of state. The Alliance Defending Freedom, the anti-gay group Biron is associated with, is a group of reactionary Christian attorneys lawyers pressing litigation to curb reproductive rights and block the freedom to marry. So - that's how they spend their time? Screaming at gays and producing kiddie porn? Send e-mail to Bart Cowboys lose another heartbreaker My favorite Cowboy came thru again Link The Cowboys were down 28-3 at halftime, then they launched another great comeback before Butterfingers Romo fumbled another interception, eventually losing 38-31. Subject: thank you Hello Bart, I just wanted to say thank you for all the time you put in to helping make this country better. Although I don't always agree with everything you say, I believe that I understand where the passion lies. I've been able to donate once before and I have every intention of doing so again as soon as the holidays are over and I can assess the pocketbook damage. I believe it's been about 6 years since I started visiting your site and I couldn't imagine it all of a sudden being gone. Thanks again for your hard work. Tell Mrs. Bart thank you as well cause we all know there is a great women behind every good man. Peace, AW AW, that was nice - thanks. Thanks to Bob Fillmore for the graphic http://math.350.org/ Long time Bartcop reader Helldog with 350.org's Bill McKibben, who is considered a the leading climate control expert. Global Warming's Terrifying New Math Three simple numbers add up to global catastrophe by Bill McKibben Link If the pictures of those towering wildfires in Colorado haven't convinced you, or the size of your AC bill this summer, here are some hard numbers about climate change: June broke or tied 3,215 high-temperature records across the United States. That followed the warmest May on record for the Northern Hemisphere – the 327th consecutive month in which the temperature of the entire globe exceeded the 20th-century average, the odds of which occurring by simple chance were 3.7 x 10-99, a number considerably larger than the number of stars in the universe. To grasp the seriousness of our predicament, you just need to do a little math. For the past year, an easy and powerful bit of arithmetical analysis first published by financial analysts in the U.K. has been making the rounds of environmental conferences and journals, but it hasn't yet broken through to the larger public. This analysis upends most of the conventional political thinking about climate change. And it allows us to understand our precarious – our almost-but-not-quite-finally hopeless – position with three simple numbers.
