When I am on drugs, I can't even find my bike." -- Willie Nelson Send e-mail to Bart Bringing Back Jim Crow by Robert Parry Link As the United States edges toward a second Jim Crow era – with right-wing whites seeking to “take our country back” via Supreme Court rulings and voter suppression against black and brown Americans – there is an urgent need to reexamine U.S. history and remove the pro-racist distortions that have been implanted by white supremacists for more than two centuries. If past indeed is prologue, then the United States must finally begin to get the facts straight and strip away the fawning mythology surrounding Thomas Jefferson and some of America’s other Founding slaveholders – or risk reliving some of the vilest chapters of U.S. history. However, to evaluate today’s historic push from the Right to roll back voting rights for black, Hispanic and low-income people requires Americans understanding the real history. For many, that will require unlearning many pleasing myths and confronting some unpleasant realities. Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream Speech" turns 50 this summer. Advertise on bartcop.com Subject: Perkel Bart, I've always admired Perkel, agreeing with him most of the time. I have no problem with him being passionate about the NSA business, though I agree with you on this issue. But when he says that Obama has outdone Bush with his Orwellian spying, I'm not buying that. And implying that Obama is responsible for the dysfunctional government is either dishonest or just plain ignorant. It's called Obama Derangement Syndrome, and I'm afraid Perkel is suffering from a case of it. Dan L I can't speak for Marc, but I'll bet part of his anger comes from the position that we EXPECT this kind of crap from the Bush bastards but having it come from a Democrat is something he did not expect. Jindal Stole $400M from Medicare "Louisiana Miracle" is stolen funds Link To cope with budget troubles, Louisiana Gov. Bhahbi Jindal's administration has steadily depleted a trust fund for elderly services created with an infusion of federal cash a decade ago. When Jindal took office, the Medicaid Trust Fund for the Elderly contained more than $830 million. Now, the balance has been cut in half to $410 million, according to the treasurer's office. By the end of the current fiscal year, it is projected to sink to $250 million or less. Officials involved with creating the fund expected the state to leave the principal intact and mainly use the interest and investment earnings, so the trust fund would provide a stream of funding for decades to pay for nursing home care and other health care services. Instead, Jindal — with approval from crooked lawmakers through the budget process — keeps dipping into the principal to plug health care budget gaps and finance Medicaid services at nursing homes. At the current rate, the money could run dry by the end of Jindal's current term, leaving his successor with a hefty health care financing gap. So, he's another George W. Bush. Take the surplus your predecessor left you, rob it blind, then dump the mess in your sucessor's lap. Subject: Rand Paul and his anti abortion bill I think the women of the US should stand up and tell Rand Paul that when he gets pregnant, they might listen to him. Otherwise…….. Janet Send e-mail to Barta Denouncing NSA Surveillance Isn’t Enough —We Need the Power to Stop It Link For more than a month, outrage has been profuse in response to news about NSA surveillance and other evidence that all three branches of the U.S. government are turning Uncle Sam into Big Brother. Now what? For weeks I've been asking that question. Surely there's more of a plan than merely expressing outrage, right? Continuing to expose and denounce the assaults on civil liberties is essential. So is supporting Bradley Manning, Edward Snowden and other whistleblowers—past, present and future. But those vital efforts are far from sufficient. Messages to Congress members, vocal protests and many other forms of public outcry are important—but they should lay the groundwork for much stronger actions to wrest control of the government away from the military-industrial-digital complex. That may seem impossible, but it’s certainly imperative: if we’re going to prevent the destruction of civil liberties. In the long run, denunciations of the surveillance state will mean little unless we can build the political capacity to end it. OK, so now we have a plan: 1. We will continue to expose and denounce the assaults on civil liberties, 2. We will step-up efforts to send e-mails and letters to our members of congress. 3. We will build the political capacity to end those assaults. Cool - we have a plan. . Send e-mail to Bart Rand Paul stands by Confederacy Link Sen. Rand Paul (R-Krazy.) is defending a former staffer who has argued in favor of secession and the Confederacy. Jack Hunter, a social media staffer for Paul, has in the past made incendiary comments about race and the Civil War. Hunter has said his views have moderated in recent years. Paul compared it to the scandal when a college student accused the senator of being involved in a collegiate, pot-fueled hazing. “If I thought he was a white supremacist, he would be fired immediately,” Paul said of the aide, who once described himself as the “Southern Avenger” and wore a Confederate flag mask. Paul said Hunter was “incredibly talented,” even if some of his writing is “absolutely stupid.” Libertarians have dealt for years with neo-Confederates within the movement who see Abraham Lincoln as a tyrant and the Civil War as an unjust act of aggression against the South. While many libertarians have condemned this group, Paul’s father, Krazy Senior, has ties to them and has himself argued that the Civil War was avoidable. Well sure the Civil War was avoidable - if you're white. If the other guy's the one in chains, what's that to a white Republican? Send e-mail to Bart Bartcop's Computer Repair

New Snowden Poll Out Link When Edward J. Snowden risked prison to go public with classified documents about NSA surveillance, he said he wanted to give the public a chance to weigh in on what he considered an excessive intrusion on the privacy of Americans. It is still unclear whether Snowden, now holed up at a Moscow airport, will escape punishment. But he has succeeded in opening the government spying’s trade-offs between civil liberties and security to the broadest and best-informed public debate in many years, even as intelligence officials are horrified at the exposure of their methods and targets. While both Republicans and Democrats in Congress have labeled Snowden a traitor, the American public apparently disagrees. In a national poll from Quinnipiac University released Wednesday, voters said by 55 percent to 34 percent that he was a whistle-blower, not a traitor. The poll showed continuing division, and perhaps some confusion, in the views of Americans about the surveillance programs Mr. Snowden revealed. In the same poll, 54 percent said the NSA's collection of data “is necessary to keep Americans safe.” But in a separate question, 53 percent said the same program “is too much intrusion into Americans’ personal privacy.” So, 55 percent say he's a whistle-blower, while 54 percent says the snooping is "neccesary." They want the whistle blown on something they agree is necessary? What does this tell us, besides the story is confusing because the details are secret? Send e-mail to Bart Send e-mail to Bart Subject: More liberal dumb Washinbgton DC ; Walmart comes to town, 6 stores, dc liberal union idiots mandate in the 11th hour, (waives union stores of course) a super min wage. Wal Mart says, "F you, we are gone!" Boom! Liberals loose 1,800 jobs for their poor community. Way to go union democrats!!! McG McG, you have summed up Wal-Mart's position exactly. I, personally, negotiatewd with them years ago and every negotiation started out with "Fuck you, We're Wal-Mart. Our field, our ball, our rules. Our way or the highway, Fuck you." Would you be OK with Wal-Mart paying wages of, say, $2 an hour? If the people are hungry enough, they'll work for that, right? And if Wal-Mart is making $66,000 profit per second, you're OK with that, too? And what if 2000 people show up for those $2 jobs? Wouldn't the smart move for Wal-Mart be to drop those wages to $1.50? BTW, YOU are paying for health care and food stamps for the Wal-Mart workers because Wal-Mart doesn't pay them enough to even get to the poverty line. Plus, Wal-Mart has 500 lawyers working on ways for them to legally avoid paying taxes, so the federal government (and your taxes, if you pay any) are subsidising Wal-Mart so they can make even more billions for the Waltons back in Arkansas I don't like McG's America.
