NYWTimes: Give Snowden a Break

The U.S. government should grant wanted man Edward Snowden clemency or a plea bargain
given the public value of revelations over the NSA's spying programs, the New York Whore
Times editorial board says.
"Considering the enormous value of the information he has revealed, and the abuses he has exposed,
Mr. Snowden deserves better than a life of permanent exile, fear and flight. He may have committed
a crime to do so, but he has done his country a great service," the editorial board wrote.
Snowden is living in Russia with temporary asylum. The United States has charged him with espionage,
and more charges could follow. Snowden's Russian amnesty is due to expire in August. He could face
30 years in prison over current charges but is more likely to face up to life in prison, the Times said.
Hmmm, life in prison might be a little harsh.
I'd think 10-12 years would be more fair.

Long Lines for Colorado Pot
First day went smooth, no fataloties

Crowds were serenaded by live music as they waited for the nation's first legal pot shops to open.
They ate doughnuts and funnel cakes as a glass-blower made smoking pipes.
Activists hope that the experiment in Colorado will prove to be a better alternative to the stupid and
costly American-led drug war, produce the kind of revenue that state officials hope and save the
government costs in locking up innocent people for enjoying flowers.
Just on the first day, prices in some places rose to more than $500 an ounce, and some shops closed
early because of short supply. It's too soon to say whether the price spikes and long lines will persist.
Stupidly, the shops in Denver have to close at 7 PM so people in line were turned away.
Why would the city tell a merchant he has to close up at 7 PM?
Would they tell McDonalds they can't sell burgers after 7 PM?
Oh well, they'll get things right soon.

part of the mainstream. Starting Wednesday, Colorado has legal pot for sale.
But as much as society often mirrors changes in sports culture, to most of the ruling
bodies of sports, weed remains a four-letter word. Fiercely protective of their image,
they don't want athletes openly smoking marijuana, regardless of what Colorado voters
might say. There is evidence in recent surveys, however, that society's changing views
toward marijuana, specifically widespread acceptance of the medicinal benefits in
alleviating pain, are thawing previous hard-line stances.
Winter Olympic athletes, for example, are all but given a free pass for smoking marijuana
while out of competition. And the World Anti-Doping Agency this past May increased the
threshold for a positive marijuana test tenfold. The NHL, meanwhile, alone among the big
four North American professional sports, does not include marijuana among its banned substances.
Nevertheless, pot advocates know they face an uphill challenge making cannabis legal for athletes.
"It's going to be a hard row to hoe," said Allen St. Pierre, the executive director of NORML.
"It's a sexy topic because it shows a clear conflict with law and holding athletes to a double standard.
But now that those legal mores are changing, one should hope these athletes should enjoy the
benefits of what's been a 50-year civil justice movement."
I don't know his specifics, but Payton Manning had major neck surgery.
IF he's in pain, pot is better for him than aspirin or any other BIG PHARMA drug.
Will the NFL insist that he stay in pain until he retires?

The deaths this year of three major Texas Republican donors, including a billionaire
who died over the weekend, could signal a generational change for party kingmakers
in the nation's largest backwards stronghold.
Harold Simmons, whose business interests ranged from energy to nuclear waste dumps,
helped transform Texas from a Democrat-controlled state in the 1970s to a Republican
stronghold by the turn of the century. Simmons' death Saturday came after Republicans
lost home builder Bob Perry in April and businessman Leo Linbeck Jr. in June.
For decades, all three helped bankroll political campaigns both in Texas and nationwide.
The loss comes as Texas Republicans already were facing a turning point.
Gov. Rick Perry isn't seeking re-election and a new breed of handjobs such
as Ted Cruz has emerged in the state.
