I just finished reading William Safire's op-ed piece in the Thurs July
26/01 NY tomes. The article entitled "Victory for Missile Defense"
is a
note worthy read in regard to the fact that Russia has now indicated
that they will work with the Bush Administration on the missile defense
plan. I found it quite telling that nowhere in his article is
a mention
of the outrageous costs to the taxpayers of the US to implement the
plan.
Consider the following facts: The US and Russia are basically allies
now. The Russians and Chinese recently had a well-publicized meeting
in
which they pledged THEIR mutual respect and signed a 20-year treaty.
Meanwhile, the US and China move ever closer; despite the tensions over
Taiwan's security, human rights, and the badly handled spy plane incident.
Today, Secretary of State Colin Powell is reported as saying "I think
the
relationship is on the upswing now, now that these irritations are
behind us,
and I know they are anxious to move forward."
Given those facts, the perception is one of an evolving Global Hegemony.
Not the UN-led style feared by "Freepers" and other right wing lunatics.
The type of New World Order I'm talking about is a Three Headed Monster
- based on Macro-Economics and Repression.
As we speak Putin is moving towards controlling Freedom of Speech and
his brutal tactics in subduing Chechnya seem to be glossed over even
by
the Western press. In the US the mainstream Corporate Media are doing
back flips and bending over backwards for a neo-Fascist regime that
wasn't even elected. In China their atrocious human rights record seems
not to curb the interest of Corporate America toward trade and investment.
As far as the European Union goes, they are not as united as we are
led
to believe. Britain's Tony Blair has indicated that they will not stand
in the way of what the US perceives as a national security issue. Italy
and Spain can likewise be counted on to have a soft outlook on the
Bush
Administration's Son of Star Wars program.
Likewise, Canada will go along with the US on any security policies,
for obvious reasons.
Is it just a perception? Is there really an internecine conspiracy between
the
big three? There is no question that if they can get along and stick
together,
the UN poses no threat to them. If the US, China and Russia all agree
to
share a Space Weapons Program, they can basically assure themselves
of
absolute world domination. "Rogue Nations" and the UN be damned.
Of course, pacts are made to be broken.
Doubly so, if the other guy lets his guard down.
Should we, as free peoples in supposed Democratic countries be alarmed?
You damn well better be. Totalitarianism knows no political stripe.
Monarchy did well for thousands of years until the common man rose
up
in revolution. Fascism and Communism were both used by the few to repress
the many. The last hope we have is Democracy.
Sadly, it seems that Democracy can be subverted if not jealously guarded.
We must all remember that the German Nazi Party first used the Democratic
process to get their foot in the door. The staged coup or putsch that
followed
was assured only after Hitler had gained control of the Army.
The parallels with the current Bush regime are frightening.
