Astrocat's Chilkoot Lake boat ride,
Haines Alaska
Alaska was generally very
wet and cool last summer, but the week I was in Haines
I enjoyed some of the warmest sunniest weather I experienced all
summer, perfect for boating.
It
was also rather unusual weather for the area as the coastal climate of
Haines is normally very wet.
Chilkoot Lake State Recreation Area has a beautiful campground nestled
in large grove of Sitka Pines,
most people come here to fish and resident grizzly bears strolled
through the campground every day
on their way down to the river to feast on salmon. The large deep lake
has many waterfalls tumbling down
out the mountains and on the far end there's a freshwater stream which
flows in and contrasts with the
turquoise colored glacial water.
I
thought the freshwater stream with its sandy beach looked like a lovely
place to go for a swim
or set up camp, but I did neither as there were just too many bears in
the area!
