It's a debate with an "Old Catholic" Priest.
I'm not sure what that means...

Subject: A thought

I think that Pope Benedict is a cut above fundie bullshit despite
the bile that erupts in your gizzard at the very mention of his name.

Hey, I like that bile in the gizzard.
Are you from the South?

Just being a friendly Devil's Advocate (and I know where that comes from)
if Used Car Dealer A robs his victim of $1000, and Used Car Dealer B
robs his victim of $200, would you call Dealer B "a cut above" dealer A?

I know the vast majority of religious people have good hearts, but the darkest,
and heartless and shrewdest of them have a way of making it into the big chair.
Do you think Benedict got there randomly?

Like all institutions (AS IN ALL INSTITUTIONS) the Catholic Church, the English throne,
The French “Enlightenment”, the Conquistadors, Ancient Rome or the Bush or Reagan government,
high crimes have been committed.

It would be peachy if there was less of that among "holy men."

The answer of course is to move forward. That does not make moving forward
from any context into stupidity but rather in lessons painfully learned.

Are we moving forward?

I am a priest in the Old Catholic church that has a rich history and shines as an example of tolerance,
inclusively (gays have full rights to any church position), gender respect (women have full rights to any
church position) and situations acute in our modern world, divorce is understood and is not judged and
divorced people may remarry.

Whoa, which Catholic Church do you belong to?
The one I left was all bullshit, threats, guilt, absurdities and corporal punishment mixed with
enough hypocrisy to choke a horse.

Your Catholic church has gender respect?
You sure Benedict knows about that?

Divorce is understood - without writing them a big, fat check?

The fertilization of an egg produces a one of a kind… never to be again duplicated, possibility.
Its’ destruction is much more serious but let’s say akin to destroying a priceless work of art.
It is a serious situation. To take one side or the other in the debate (in a responsible way) is possible.

Hmmmm, last time I checked, they called abortion "murder" and people were
insutructed to "behave like sheep"  and not ask any tough questions.

I will not make judgment on the decision but I will not get into demonizing or making a fool of the decider.
Somehow one who sees the unique possibilities of the fertilized egg is evil, foolish or silly.
I believe that you can do better than that. I believe that you are an intelligent and compassionate man
and can respect on a little broader scale.

You may have the wrong guy.
I'm 55/45 pro-choice.
Since I'm a man, it's not really my business, but I think abortion should be very rare.

If a woman thinks she can't handle a pregnancy, I'm not going to tell her to "sac up."
But a woman who has an abortion so she can go skiing with her friends is showing me
that she has no character and even less respect for human life.

You are remembered in my prayers.
Keep Hammering!

Father Bernie

Father Bernie, any chance he'd agree your faith depends on geography?
If you were born in India or Vietnam or Iran, you'd worship a different God, right?

I know some crazies who, when asked that question, say, "No, there is only one true God,
and I would've found my way to Him no matter where I was born," which is pure crap.

They can't handle the truth - that most people are engrained and enlisted into whatever
religion their parents had been roped into - and that's how they know the "true" God.

Once you reject science and logic, a true believer could be a religious suicide bomber.
He's dying for what he believes in - he's a martyr. How could he not be?

And, I think Benedict is a little too eager to make John Paul II a saint, as tho he's laying the
groundwork for his successor to make Benny a saint, too.  How cynical can a pope get?
How could JPII even be considered a saint after he refused to address the next question:

What's your position on the sex problems that are killing the Catholic Church?
Is there any excuse for today's priests to avoid taking the Zero Tolerance pledge?
Is it possibly the majority has sex sins on their souls, and they can't take the pledge
because they'd have to stop being priests?

I keep saying a Vegas hooker would give the priests the physical release they need
and thousands of young rectums could be spared.

Hell, it's even cheaper.
Vegas hookers don't band together and demand $100M from their local diocese.
