Hey, BartCop:
As someone living just five miles away from Enron’s corporate headquarters,
I’ve got prime seats for this entire affair.
I think it’s laughable that the boobs in the media are spending so
much time comparing the Enron Fiasco to Watergate and Whitewater.
Let’s see, we have a Republican president hell-bent on staying in power
and a Republican jihad that turns
into much ado about a blowjob. Neither shares anything in common
with the Enron Fiasco. However, the one scandal
that does have a lot in common with this is being ignored: Iran-Contra.
It’s eerie how much they have in common.
I'm sure that there are more than I've listed, but it's the best I
could do without pulling out the history books.
Take a look:
Vice-Presidents and Secret Meetings: Bush the Elder met with
terrorists in secret to negotiate a arms-for-hostage deal.
This is known as “October Surprise.” Cheney supposedly met with
energy executives (specifically Enron executives) in
secret to negotiate the continued American reliance on environmentally-unfriendly
power sources. This is known as
“The Energy Taskforce.”
Out-To-Lunch Presidents: Iran-Contra proved one of two
things about Reagan. Either Reagan was a horrible mismanager who
did not realize what his subordinates were doing under his nose or Reagan
really was far more in-the-loop than he admitted. Neither are very
flattering. Enron has Bush officials acknowledging having talked
to Lay about the coming collapse of Enron,
but those same officials did not tell Bush about them. So Bush
is either a horrible mismanager who does not realize what his subordinates
are doing under his nose or Bush really is far more in-the-loop than he
is admitting.
The Shield of Plausible Deniability: We saw several officials
in the Reagan Administration take the fall for Iran-Contra.
This was a concerted effort to protect Reagan by having a shield of
plausible deniability erected around him. We are now
seeing a few officials in the Bush Administration being set up for
this same purpose. We have the secretaries of Commerce
and Treasury and the White House chief of staff. Who’s next?
The Brains of the Outfit: It would seem that the task of actually
executing the plans of Iran-Contra was left to Bush the Elder. It
would also appear that the shield of plausible deniability was not meant
to be shared with him since Casper Weinberger so
close to spilling the beans about Bush. We already know the brains
of this Bush’s Administration is Dick Cheney. We already know that
Cheney is largely responsible for the Energy Task Force that Enron was
going to benefit so greatly from.
Lackluster Investigations: Lawrence Walsh, special investigator for Iran-Contra, says that the Democratically-controlled Congress was slow getting started investigating the allegations. This Congress is also getting to a slow start investigating the allegations. Indeed, the Democrats in this Congress are not doing enough to nail the Bush Administration with this.
The Victims: Thanks to Iran-Contra, how many people did
we put at risk? How many innocents did the Contras kill?
How many people were taken out by our missiles that our president gave
to the Iranians? Our president never interceded
on their behalf. Thanks to Enron, an already unstable and lagging
economy was giving another kick in the groin.
How many people are going to be affected by further layoffs?
How will they support their families?
And what will happen to the Enron workers who lost everything when
the company went under?
Our president has yet to intercede on their behalf.
