My Brush with Greatness

The first year of the Iraq War, I was invited to a big Rotary Club dinner on United Nations Day
where our Senator Russ Feingold was the guest speaker.  I sat at a table with others from
Milwaukee’s United Nations Association.

Feingold started by saying that he hadn’t supported the Iraq War and our table of U.N.
supporters clapped wildly.  The other 400 businessmen in the room didn’t.

Later in the speech, Feingold said he felt the U.N. should have been listened to and utilized more
before we marched into that war and I clapped wildly.  NOBODY else did … not even my table
of UN supporters, who were now cowed by the silence.

Feingold looked down at me (I was sitting directly under him) and said, “Boy, am I glad YOU’RE here.”
