My Brush with Greatness
I caught the flu from
Henry Fonda in 1966.
I got to participate in the Theater Guild Luncheon at The Plaza Hotel
in New York City.
A number of girls from my high school class were “pages”, which meant
we stood around
holding flowers wearing short formal dresses. Sounds weird, but I think
it’s deep tradition
or something. I’ve certainly never done anything like it since.
We had a suite where we were to get all dressed and ready. Fancy
schmancy, eh?
Anyway, we rode down the elevator with Nancy Kulp, who played the
banker's secretary on the
Beverly Hillbillies which was still a big hit back then. As we got off
the elevator, we ran into Imogene Coca.
Henry Fonda and Julie Harris were the honorees at this shindig, so I
had the chance to meet
and shake hands with both of them. When Mr. Fonda went up to address
the gathered throng,
he apologized that he couldn’t talk longer, but he was getting the flu.
The next day, I came down
with the worst case of the flu I can ever remember having. I missed
taking my SATs.
