My Brush with Greatness

For several years I worked as a bellman at the Chicago Marriott
Downtown Hotel on Michigan Avenue.
In that job I met many notable
people. On one occasion there was a city wide Chicago Police
convention
at the hotel, and I saw a man stooping over the daily events
listings. I approached and asked if I could
help him find anything, and he replied that no, he was fine.
He went on to introduce himself as
Abbie Hoffman, and then he winked at me, nodded his head
towards a cop standing a few feet away from us, and said, "I'm their
keynote speaker tonite."
This brought a smile to my face.
I thought it was rather ironic to find
Abbie Hoffman in a building with hundreds of Chicago's finest.
We spoke for a few minutes, and he told me he was actually in town for
some Chicago Seven anniversary/reunion.
Within a year or so of our meeting he
was dead.
