My Brush with Greatness
Bart,
It was the late 70’s. My band, Gaskin’s Switch was booked as an
opening act
for the Earl Scruggs Review playing at Drury College in Springfield,
Mo.
Earl had his sons and the rest of the
band unload and set up gear.
While they were doing that I noticed Earl sitting in the bleachers
watching what was going on.
Well, I grabbed my hand made Ericson banjo and sat down beside
him. In a few minutes he
was telling tales, playing my banjo and I was picking harmony on his
pre-war Mastertone.
What a nice, down to earth fellow he
was. BTW, our show sucked pretty bad
but the Review kicked the house down. Picked up a couple of banjo
licks to boot!
