My Brush with Greatness

Hey, Bart!

I met John McEuen of the Nitty Gritty Dirt band so long ago that I don't remember exactly when it was
--undoubtedly sometime in the early 70s, connected with being in Little Rock radio.

During one of their concerts at Barton Coliseum, John said, "Since we're in Arkansas, I want to play this for you,"
and tore into "The Arkansas Traveler," using only his left hand on the banjo! You've heard of Heavy Metal--this was Heavy Wood!

The next day, he came by the station for an interview. I told him how impressed I was with
his one-handed Traveler and asked if I could back him up on guitar for a few minutes.
He graciously agreed and used BOTH hands on the tune this time.

When our little jam was over, John McEuen said to me, "You play nice rhythm."
Now THERE'S something to have on your tombstone!

Your Fan,
 David B in Lower Arkansas
