President Rick Santorum - Seriously?
by
Izzy Woods
For once, Donald Trump has
actually said something vaguely correct.
In a recent video of his, he said he had no idea how Rick Santorum
could actually manage to pull off
three victories despite the fact he lost in 2006 by 19% (a national
record) - and now wants to run for President.
The
fact he has next to zero electability chance against Obama, with Real
Clear Politics giving Obama a
comfortable 9% lead, should be enough for Republicans to abandon him.
We also know that Republicans are
desperate to find a replacement to Mitt Romney – AKA Mr 25%. Surely
though, they can’t be that desperate
they have to turn to Rick Santorum? At least Gingrich and Paul would
have a decent debate with Obama.
Santorum has hardly been touched by the news media and quite frankly
when you really start to delve into
the deep dark fathoms of his mind he deserves to be fully scrutinised
and exposed.
K
Street Project
From
1994 onwards, the GOP started getting into bed with lobbyists and
corporate drones en masse.
The very definition of what has come to be known as crony capitalism at
its most vulgar. Santorum was the
Senate liaison for the project, meeting with GOP strategists and
then-House majority whip Tom DeLay to
candidly pick and choose jobs for fellow Republicans. This is not some
crazy whipped-up conspiracy theory;
all of this is in the public domain. The project even had a written
dossier to keep tabs of which companies
offered Republicans jobs. What’s the bet that if they did, they would
get special tax incentives or favoured
legislation passed? Amazing then that Santorum fancies himself as an
outsider.
Your
Right to Privacy Government Spying on you
Everyone
has a right to privacy? Not according to Santorum. The first bit of
this video bluntly shows that
Santorum had no interest in keeping government out of the bedroom. Can
you imagine what society would
look under the doctrine of President Santorum?

In
particular, his opinion on gay rights is just plain disturbing. In a
2003 interview, he said that if the Supreme
Court allows you to have gay sex in your home, it’s the same as having
the right to bigamy, polygamy, incest
and adultery. It’s surprising to think that even Republicans would want
a president so passionately obsessed
with gay sex.
How
far would Santorum take his crusade on invading our privacy? We know
he’s preparing the troops to
storm your bedroom because apparently privacy isn’t in the
Constitution, but what about your church or schools?
Maybe he’ll even snoop into our bank account and check on credit
card transfers or something even more trivial, who knows?
Foreign
Policy
Just
as Afghanistan is finally being wrapped up, Santorum is spinning the
war propaganda on Iran. Over 70%
of Americans disagree with the wars in the Middle East, yet Santorum is
openly threatening to bomb Iran if he
becomes President, insisting that they pose a direct threat to the US.
Firstly, the CIA and Mossad (Israel’s
intelligence agency) have both questioned whether or not Iran really
has any nuclear weapons. Secondly, their
military is mostly comprised of 1960s and 70s equipment the US and
Britain gave to the Shah, a puppet dictator
put there in place of a democratic government. The US spends nearly
$700Billion annually on defence alone,
more than every other national defence budget combined – probably more
than enough to hold off Iran’s aging
military capabilities.
Santorum’s
rise to political stardom will actually work against the Republicans.
His neoconservative ideology
appeals to a minority hardcore right-wing activist base that will
campaign for him relentlessly. As the primary
goes on he’ll likely pick up substantial amounts of delegates, perhaps
even enough to get the nomination and t
hus giving Democrats an easy victory. Or, he’ll divide the GOP right
the way to the convention and then
through to the general election - again, giving Democrats an easy
victory. With Super Tuesday fast approaching,
the Republican candidates will unleash more firepower at each other,
further dividing and splitting the party.
It
will be very interesting to see if Santorum can turn this momentum into
even more victories, a worrying
prospect that his ideas then are actually being taken up by the public.
