the official character summary released by Paramount:

Late 20s, early 30s. Vulcan female. Austere yet sensual. She's the Science Officer assigned to
oversee humanity's progress on board Enterprise. Although she's cautious and guarded around
humans, whom she considers primitive and irrational, she's developed a grudging respect for
Captain Archer. She'll become one of his most loyal and trusted crew members.
 

The relationship between Archer and T'Pol is described as similar to the Skinner/Mulder relationship
on the X-Files, with "a mutual level of respect and animosity." As a Vulcan, T'Pol knows more about
the situations the crew encounters, but doesn't volunteer this information until she has to.
