My Brush with Greatness
In 1984, the airline my
wife worked for hosted a Vintage Film Festival in Houston and they flew
a bunch of yesteryear celebrities in for the event. Attendees included
Ruby Keeler, Dana Andrews,
Paul Henreid (Casablanca), Billy Barty, Ray Bolger (Wizard of Oz),
David Soul (Starsky) and many others.
The event was put on by David Gest, who
later was beat up by his then-wife, Liza Minelli. ha
ha
My wife was the organizer and I was the
(unpaid) official photographer. The celebrities were
spread around the tables and my table had Natalie Schaeffer (Lovie
Howell from Gilligan’s Island).
It turns out that she was 84 at the
time and she wore huge thick glasses. She sat next to me
and we talked for the whole evening. She was a really nice lady and a
lot of fun.
So, I always refer to that night as my
date with Mrs. Thurston Howell,
