She
was an American singer, actress, and television personality. She
reached the height of her
popularity recording hits during the Big Band era but had even greater
success a decade later, in television.
She had a string of 80 charted popular
hits, lasting from 1940 into the late 1950s, and after appearing in a
handful of films went on to a four-decade career in American
television. TV Guide magazine ranked her
at #16 on their list of the top fifty television stars of all time.
She was briefly involved with drummer Gene Krupa. After she relocated
to Hollywood she dated
and almost married Jimmy Stewart. She flirted with General George
Patton while entertaining
the troops in Britain and France during World War II.
She was married to actor George Montgomery from 1943 to 1962. Frank
Sinatra's longtime valet
claimed she and Sinatra had a long-standing affair in the 1950s.
Romances of the later 1960s
involved Dick Martin, Eddie Fisher and Rod Taylor.
In the early 1970s, she had a long and happy public romance with Burt
Reynolds. She also dated
