From Astrocat
Saw hundreds of
sandhill cranes near Santiago today.
The challenge was locating them as Sherburne NWR is a huge place.
The easiest way to find them is
to listen for them as you can hear them from a long way off.
The birds seemed skittish and were very difficult to approach compared
to my past encounters
with them in Alaska, however today was opening day for deer season and
there were hunters
out in large numbers all over the refuge.
Will be going back again to check out
their roosting site, a large lake which is
about a mile hike in from the nearest road, and hopefully get some
closer shots.
This week's crane count, 6,190 set a record for the refuge.
Astrocat, thanks for that.
