Subject: An open letter to Michael Moore:
Dear Michael,
I am a member of the Green Party and until November 7th I counted myself
as one of your most enthusiastic supporters for you tireless efforts
to
help the causes of working men and women. I even supported
Ralph Nader
for a time, prior to his decision to attack Gore and campaign in swing
states, despite telling us Greens that he would not do so. But
when the
RNC started running ads for Nader, and he did not say it was inappropriate,
it became quite clear just which side Nader was really on.
So I threw my support behind Gore.
Unfortunately, I don't reside in Florida, where Bush will probably win
by only
a few thousand votes. Even conservative estimates are showing
that Mr. Nader
was able to siphon off about 40 or 50 thousand votes that would have
gone to Gore,
more than enough to win Florida… and the presidency.
Now I could call you a traitor, a sell out, a back-stabber, a spoiler,
or even a
republican Uncle Tom. However I will not do that, instead I will
say simply…
Mike, you have helped give the presidency to George W. Bush.
Knowing you, that simple fact must sting more than any barrage
of insults ever will, because you know that every bit of environmental
damage Bush allows via pro-polluter policies; every poor child that
is
denied adequate health coverage so that money can go for tax cuts;
every
person who gets screwed over by their HMO and is left with no recourse;
every person who loses their job when Bush tanks our economy with
standard republican deficit spending; everybody who dies in mideast
conflicts as a result of Bush's inept foreign policy; every child that
has to attend a public school that has been destroyed by vouchers;
every
person of color who is denied a job based only on the color of their
skin
because of the repeal of affirmative action programs; all of that,
and more,
is on your shoulders. You helped make it all possible,
and I'm sure the
republicans thank you from the bottoms of their greedy shriveled little
hearts.
I'm sure you'll have some glib self-serving remark or pithy comeback
about your moral victory, or about how you really are not to blame
for
what Bush does in office. But how many people voted for Nader
because
you told them it would be OK and Nader wasn't going to hand the election
to Bush? You said Gore can win, and Nader can get 5% for
the Greens,
and now it looks as if we have lost both. In a time of great
division in
this country, you only helped to create more division when we needed
unity more than ever. The inevitable backlash from this will
almost
certainly hurt the Green party, if not destroy it completely.
I hope the knowledge of what you have done keeps you awake
every night for the next four years.
Sincerely,
A former fan and supporter
