Hi,
I keep reading reports that only 50,000
marched in San Francisco. I was there,
and I am pretty sure this is an under-inflated
number. I've been to many large gatherings,
and I am sure there were a lot more than
50,000. My personal estimate is a minimum of 100,000.
On 5 random occasions I took counts of the
number of people that walked by me in 10-second increments.
On average, every 10 seconds between 85
and 110 people walked by me. Let's settle on the number 90.
The march took three hours (11:00am to about 2:00pm) when the last marcher walked by me.
Now do the simple math:
(90 marchers per 10 second increment) * (6 increments in a minute) * (60 minutes in an hour) * (3 hours) = 97,200.
This number does not, however, count all
the people along the parade route - and there were a lot.
Let's say, however, that there were only
2,800, then the number of people that participated on Saturday,
January 18th anti-Iraq war protest is estimated
at 100,000.
Keep swinging the hammer,
Peter
