Hey Bartcop,
I stumbled upon your site from Rack Jite's
link.
I'm looking forward to exploring it further.
As a Texan, I am still wondering about George
"Compassionate Conservatism" Bush.
Exactly where does the "compassion" part come
into play ? I'm still looking.
Perhaps its compassion for the mega-industries
who have turned Texas into the #1
polluter in the nation by pushing a "voluntary"
compliance program for polluters ?
I'm sure that the millions that he's received
from these companies played absolutely
no part in his decision to make the pollution-control
initiatives "voluntary," did it ?
Where's the compassion now that Texas leads
the nation in the percentage
of children with no health care ?
Perhaps it's compassion for the HMO industry
when he vetoed a 1995 bill that
passed overwhelmingly in the Texas legislature
that would have given Texas citizens
greater freedom to choose their own doctors,
and given doctors greater freedom to
decide what treatment, medicines, and specialists
their patients needed ?
When the same bill was re-introduced in 1997
with an extra provision allowing
Texas citizens to sue their HMO's, Bush didn't
sign it, but he didn't veto it either,
knowing his veto would be over-ridden.
This way he can tell his HMO rich fat-cats
(see Richard Rainwater of Columbia/HCA)
he opposed the bill, while telling
others that "under my guidance, this vital protection
is now the law of the land."
Bush is a two-faced (frat) rat.
Where's the compassion in his statement that
the Republican Party should keep the
"repeal Roe v. Wade" plank in its party platform
? If his daughter was raped,
I guarantee you, in a heartbeat, they'd be
willing to get her an abortion.
Where's the compassion when he continues to
support mandatory sentencing ?
If he had a compassionate bone in his body,
he'd push for an amnesty program
for non-violent drug offenders (there are
over 5,000 in Texas jails for marijuana
possession alone). It's just too bad
all those poor saps in jail didn't have a
rich daddy like his to help him escape prosecution.
And of course, he's so ashamed
of his (possible, he's not sure) cocaine use
as a young man, he signed a bill making
possession of less than 1/20th of an ounce
of cocaine punishable by jail time.
You know, the Manchester, New Hampshire editorial
describing Bush recently
as an "empty suit" had it wrong. His
suit is full alright, stuffed and bloated down
with so much special interest money, Bush
is like a puppet on a string.
Compassionate conservatism my ass.
Sign me a disgusted Texan.
Steve S
Please don't use my name anywhere.
Bush goes after those that disagree with him.
Steve, well put.
Not being a Texan, I'd never heard of most of what you mentioned.
However, when it comes to the "lack of compasionate conservatism,"
you are wrong about your governor.
When he has a mentally-unstable man put do death, the doctors swab
his arm with alcohol so the poor bastard doesn't get an infection when
the governor's Needle of Death breaks his skin.
You need to lighten up, my friend.
