I went to San Diego show because I was planning
a visit with my brother,
sister in law and nephews. It just so happened
to be the opening night of the tour.
It is hard for me to be objective about a U2
show.
U2 has been my passion since I was 6 years old
(1983-WAR album). This is no joke.
My family and friends worry about my obsession,
but their music gets me through life.
So my brother and I get to the arena and lines
are going all around the place.
We waited almost an hour to get in because of
security.
We got to chat with fellow U2 fans (ranging in
age from 8 - 60), which is always fun.
We finally got in there and the opening band
(Kings Of Leon) was just starting.
Personally, I thought they were good, but I was
already a fan. They're kind of
southern rock but they also have contemporary
style to their music.
When the lights went out for U2 to come on, the
screams were deafening.
I was so excited, I was shaking.
They opened with "City of Blinding Lights" and
then went straight into "Vertigo".
The whole crowd sang aloud so loud that you could
barely hear Bono, which was the case through
most of the show. Bono seemed to love it,
and half the time he just let us sing it ourselves. Right after
Vertigo they went into 3 songs form "Boy": "Electric
Co."(my favorite from that album), "An Cat Dubh "
(I think that's spelled right), and "Into the
Heart". It sounded like the songs were just written yesterday.
They then went into "New Year's Day" and "Sunday
Bloody Sunday" where upon Bono put on a white
bandana over his eyes, and even played the snare
drum for a minute. The whole night just flew by, even
though they played for almost 2 hours.
It was nonstop excitement throughout. Bono even brought "the fly"
back, crawling across the stage with the glasses
on. It would never ocurr to you that you were watching
a 25 year old band. They're more energetic
and passionate as ever, more than any new band around!
The show ended with "40" and the band left the
stage one by one......First Bono, then Edge, Adam,
and lastly Larry banging it out one last time
as the crowd was left chanting "How long to sing this song?".
Even with not so great seats, I have absolutely
no complaints. I've seen them six times, and this might be
the best one but I feel that way evertime I hear
them. I already have tickets to the shows in Houston and Dallas,
but that won't be until October (and this time
I'm gonna be on the floor upfront!).
This show will have to satisfy me until then.
2 days later and I've still got the chills.
So if you don't have tickets, do whatever is
necessary to get them!!!!!!!
And Keep that hammer going because we need you,
especially in the lonestar state!
