A number of U.S. military leaders have waged
an extraordinary behind-the-scenes resistance
to what they fear is a secret plan by George
W. Bush to wage war against Iran.
One intelligence source told me that Joint Chiefs
chairman, Gen. Peter Pace, has explored the
possibility of resigning if Bush presses forward
with air attacks against Iran, a war strategy
that might be done in coordination with Israeli
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.
The Pentagon brass is raising an alarm over how
stretched the U.S. military has become because of
fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, suggesting
that another front in Iran could add to American vulnerabilities.
One intelligence source directed me to a paragraph
in Seymour Hersh's new article in The New Yorker,
referring to Bush's order for hair-trigger preparations
so
he can attack Iran within 24 hours.

"Obviously, the soldiers lack the necessary information
about where to look and who to look for," said the
government engineer, who declined to give his
name. "There are too many houses and too many hide-outs."
American military commanders in Iraq describe
the security plan they began implementing in mid-February
as a rising tide: a gradual influx of thousands
of U.S. and Iraqi troops whose extended presence in the city's
violent neighborhoods will drown the militants'
ability to stage bombings and sectarian killings.
But U.S. troops and Baghdad residents say the
plan is hampered because security forces cannot identify,
let alone apprehend, the perpetrators. Shiite
militiamen in the capital say they are keeping a low profile to
wait out the security plan.
"I don't know who I'm fighting most of the time,"
said Staff Sgt. Joseph Lopez.
"I don't know who is setting what IED."
Bush, McCain and the GOP think it's a great idea to send more soldiers
into this bloody puzzle.
Will the Democrats make them pay for the unnecessary deaths that will
result from their pigheadedness?

Bart,
It's too bad there's a whole generation out there
that doesn't even KNOW about the
Nuremberg trials
and the precedents that were set by the Allies
that are being violated now by the worthless bunch in the
White House and aided and abetted by the sacless
crowd in the Congress.
My Dad and three of my uncles served during WWII,
one was killed in North Africa, the others fought
in some of the worst combat in Europe and got
more than a couple of Purple Hearts between them.
They gave their all to stop this kind of crap
ever happening again and they'd all be outraged at what's
being done in our name by this bunch of miscreants.
Too bad they'll never be held accountable.

New Yorker columnist Sy Hersh says the "single
most explosive" element of his latest article involves an effort
by Bush to stem the growth of Shiite influence
in the Middle East by funding violent Sunni groups.
In short, Bush is funding the people who are killing our soldiers.
Hersh says the U.S. has been "pumping money, a
great deal of money, without congressional authority, without
any congressional oversight" for covert operations
in the Middle East where it wants to "stop the Shiite spread
or the Shiite influence." Hersh says these funds
have ended up in the hands of "three Sunni jihadist groups"
who are "connected to al Qaeda" but "want to
take on Hezbollah."
"Bush is really taking his notion of executive
privilege to the absolute limit here, running covert operations,
using money that was not authorized by Congress,
supporting groups indirectly that are involved with the
same people that did 9/11."

Jabour had spent two years in a secret CIA prison.
His account of life in that system, often does not accord
with the portrait the administration has offered
of the CIA system. Jabour said Pakistani officers had beaten,
abused and burned him. Two American interrogators
also questioned him and told him he would be rich if he
cooperated and would vanish for life if he refused.

Losing Afghanistan

While media attention has been focused on the
U.S. quagmire in Iraq, an equally failed war in Afghanistan
has received little coverage. As in countless
militaristic U.S. nation-building fiascos, "mission creep" in
Afghanistan is leading to another foreign policy
disaster.
Although the escalation in Afghanistan has not
been announced publicly, a reliable source with connections
at the Pentagon tells me that the Joint Staff
has been ordered to plan for a surge in that country, and the
DoD Comptroller has been asked to budget the
money for it.
As in Iraq, however, the escalation just promises
to sink the United States deeper into the nation-building morass.
The Republicans are so crazy and so partisan, they'll never admit Bush
has screwed up. No matter how clear
the evidence is, no matter how many soldiers die, no matter how many
billions are squandered and no matter
how bad it gets, they stand behind him and tell him he's doing a great
job.
I think the Democrats should submit a bill that says the nation has
lost confidence in Bush-Cheney and
call for early presidential elections to get us out of this mess.
Of course, that measure would fail, but at least they'd make the point.
It would cause people to say,
"It's too bad we're stuck with this death-loving
monster for another 22 months," and it would put a
splinter in the shoe of every Republican - and it would hang over Bush's
head until he leaves.
...but they never listen to me.
