Iraq & the Logic of Timetables
  by Robert Parry

 consortiumnews.com

 Excerpt:
If a timetable encourages Iraqi insurgents to silence their guns and to stop planting roadside bombs
even temporarily to wait the Americans out Iraq might get the breathing space it needs to begin
healing its sectarian divisions.

Indeed, one could argue that Bush's "surge" plan and Bush's fear about letting the enemy "wait us out"
offer essentially the same opportunity: to achieve enough peace and quiet in the short term for
reconciliation and reconstruction to begin.

But a withdrawal timetable has additional advantages. First, it has the chance of bringing relative peace
to the entire country as insurgents pull back anticipating a total American military withdrawal, while the
"surge" seeks greater security only for Baghdad.

Subject: Imus

I'm not sure that I agree with the firing of Don Imus for using racial slurs.

Look at Rush Limbaugh who has made a career out of slurring African-Americans.
He did get fired from mainstream TV on ESPN for racist remarks.
However he has maintained his radio show and kept his sponsors despite a lifetime of racist behavior.
So if you are going to fire Imus, you must also fire Limbaugh.

Lawyer: Rove didn't mean to delete email

 Link

 Excerpt:
Karl Rove's lawyer on Friday dismissed the notion that he intentionally deleted his own e-mails
that might have incriminated him from a Republican-sponsored computer system.

Any e-mails Rove deleted were the type of routine deletions people make to keep their inboxes orderly,
Luskin said. He said Rove had no idea the e-mails were being deleted from the server.

The mystery of the missing e-mails is just one part of a furor over the firings of eight federal prosecutors
that has threatened Tortureboy Gonzales' job and thrown his Justice Department into turmoil.

Would Karl Rove criminally erase e-mails to cover up evidence of his crimes?
Why can't we just take their word for it and trust our leaders?

Subject: Imus

There's only one fitting punishment for race baiters and social heretics like Imus:
A nationally televised Crucifixion Special hosted by Oprah Winfrey with special guests
Revs. Jesse and Al who take turns slowly driving in the nails, one-by-one, with a
sledge hammer shaped and painted to look like a watermelon.

Furthermore, there should be a Special Sensitivity Czar appointed by Congress to the FCC
who will insure, once and for all, that this kind of obscene horror can never again occur to
scar the lives and accost the delicate sensibilities of America's precious minority classes.

In fact, there should be a sensitivity task force charged with using the NSA monitoring facilities
to keep the broadcast media on the alert 24/7 - ready and able to swing into immediate action
much like The Strategic Air Command. It could be called The National Insensitivity Grievance
Group Emergency Response.

They would be charged with the critical mission of launching an immediate tactical emergency
counter response at any time to any utterances of: Jungle Bunny, Spook, Brillo Head, Tire Lips,
Splib, Spear Chucker, Nog, Ghetto Smurf, Jigaboo, Chicken Breath, Moolie, Sambo, Velcro Top,
Michelin Face, Boogie, Farm Equipment, Aunt Jemima, Keffir, Uncle Tom, Shine Boy, Buckwheat,
Welfare Monkey, Burr Head, Chocolate Drop, Shvartz, Coco Puff, Colored Dude, Shwoogie,
Coon, Corn Bread, Darkie, Dinge, Eraser Head, Geechee, Swamp Kike, Yard Ape, Porch Monkey,
Wool Head, Tree Swinger, Tar Baby, Spade, Smokefoot, Silverback, Pickaninny, Nick-Nok,
Groid, Mud Duck, Melanoid, Mandingo, Lincoln's Nightmare, Crack Jockey, Kingfish,
Watermelon Wookie, Jackamammy, Ghetto Hamster, ..and of course, the unspeakable "N" word.

Maybe then, these brazen bigots would think twice about their offensive and soon to be illegal behavior.

Now, let's write down any impure thoughts for evidence and wash our brains out with New Improved Tide.

Subject: the Duke thing

Umm.. no.
These are rich kids.

Clearly their parents did whatever was necessary (money, political pressure, private
investigations, etc) to influence local authorities and to shut up an African American stripper.
Anyone who thinks otherwise is incredibly naive.

Well, then I guess I'm incredibly naive.
All the evidence says the stripper was lying.
It's OK for the downtrodden to scream "rape" at innocent men?

The Duke lacrosse rapists are emblematic of the right-wingnut world - although they
have all the power, these people play the victim card more far more often than anyone.

There you go again.
In THIS case, there are no "Duke lacross rapists" because there was no rape.
John Edwards is a wealthy guy from Carolina - should we hate him, too?

"Oh, my life is ruined..." but within five years all of them will be working for Fortune 500 companies.
Each of them will have beautiful homes, and beautiful wives, and they won't for a moment say to
themselves, "well, how did I get this?" They DESERVE it, damn it.

Why is it important to hate Americans who have more money than us?
What if we were neutral on their character until some evidence shows up?
Yes, they hired a stripper, but she accepted the job so the morality thing is a wash, right?

Despite the fact that, as we all know, the system is set up to screw the white, Christian, hetero male.
Bartcop, I can't believe you fell for this.

Fell for what?

"We are lowering the standards of what is acceptable in our society and we are sending a message

behavior in the entertainment mainstream."

Then, warning parents to move their little children away from the TV sets, Lieberman cited a few of
the outrages: On ABC's "Wilde Again," a character asks to be called "Daddy's little whore." Another
ABC program showed an upraised middle finger. CBS' "Bless This House" used the phrase "little hooters"
in reference to a girl's breasts. "Profoundly disturbing," Lieberman intoned. "Sophomoric."

Funny thing: The previous morning, Lieberman had been a guest on the Don Imus radio show

Bart, I love your anti-Iraq War rags and anti-Bush bashes,
but please stop this Hillary for God or President shit.

There is no God, and I'm pretty sure she's going to be president.
Am I not allowed to talk about politics anymore?

In your mind, Hillary is the front runner for the Democratic nomination.
Fine.

In my mind, 2 and 2 = 4.

I'll vote for her if I have to. But that doesn't mean that I'll be happy.
Even though she's still a "triangulator" of the truth, I know that any
Democrat is preferable to any Republican.

I agree.

However, please don't ask or expect me to be enthusiastic about Hillary.
She's a...  <lots of insults>

Radlib?
I knew that before you signed your name.

Have you read the page lately?
I'm not asking anybody to be enthusiastic about Hillary.

When you watch the Kentucky Derby, if the announcer says
"Wild Turkey is in the lead," that doesn't mean he necessarily likes Wild Turkey.
It just means he has eyes and can see which horse is in the lead.

Financially, I need anybody but Wild Turkey to win.
Besides, she'd rather spend her campiagn money at Kos, where she's hated.

 Excerpt:
It doesn't matter whether the journalists and politicians who appeared on the Imus show think he should
be forgiven. Special pleading by anyone who has benefited from airtime with Imus is obviously not worth much.
Every celebrated bigot has friends and sycophants who will vouch for his purity of spirit, so why should we
believe the Imus posse any more than the cronies of David Duke or Louis Farrakhan? The proof is in the
transcripts, where the vicious evidence is overwhelming. His friends' impulse to defend him may be understandable
as a matter of loyalty. As for the preening suggestion by his guests that the Imus show provided serious political
discussion available nowhere else on the airwaves, that scarcely requires contradiction. All of these fine minds
-- and their great thoughts! -- can be found quite easily in other venues. Which may be where they will explain
why they went along with Imus's sickening act for so many years.

Brain injuries plague troops

 denverpost.com

 Excerpt:
Nearly two in 10 soldiers who have returned to Fort Carson from Iraq in the past two years have suffered
a traumatic brain injury, according to an ongoing study by medical experts at the base. Since June 2005,
13,400 soldiers in three brigades have been screened for TBI.   Fort Carson has found that 178 of every
1,000 soldiers screened had a traumatic brain injury...

"A majority of patients that return to us will have symptoms of either headache, memory loss, irritability,
difficulty sleeping, and those symptoms change from when the inciting event occurs to when the soldier returns,"
said Dr. John Cho.  TBI is considered the "signature wound" of the Iraq war. Better body armor and Kevlar
have kept alive soldiers who might have died in earlier wars. But exposure to multiple blasts and rattling of the
brain inside the skull have caused the hidden injuries."

I forget - why did we get involved in this never-ending quagmire?

Clinton: Ready for a Fight

 Excerpt:
Hillary Rodham Clinton says the pain and turmoil of her White House years don't discourage her
in the least as she wages a campaign she hopes will bring her back to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
"I've decided this country is worth fighting for," she said

Contemplating the inevitable Republican slimeball personal attacks, she said, "So what, people are going
to say something bad about me?" She burst out laughing. "I mean really. I mean look. I understand how
contentious American politics is. And why? Because there are big things at stake."

Clinton said she doesn't take attacks personally or lie awake fretting. "I'm sorry to tell you this, I do not
Maybe because I've been at it for so long. And because I understand it's a perverse form of flattery.
If people didn't take you seriously, they wouldn't be attacking you."

Random Thought...

30 Rock is a funny show on NBC.
It's SNL's Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin and Tracy Morgan.

One thing that makes it extra-funny?
They don't have a laugh-track telling you when to laugh.
Without a laugh-track, people have to listen to the dialog to get the show.

When we get to Bartcop TV, we won't have a laugh-track.

There is a list a mile long of right wing talkers who have said far worse and they are still yacking away.

I agree.

Imus just thought he was using a cool phrase that the kids use. As I understand it, the phrase came from
a Spike Lee movie. Imus didn't invent it. He only thought he was allowed to use it too, in a comedic setting.

Subject: Imus

Bart,

It is really sad to see what has happened to Don Imus over the past few years.  I was a big fan of his
back in the '70s and used to listen to his show and watch it on TV most days in the past few years.
He used to be genuinely funny with a satiracal wit.  I even went to his show when he was on the road
and he did a show in Kansas City.  When he was adlibbing with his sidekick Chuck McCord it was great.

However Imus became a rude, mumbling, grumpy old man and his show was basically taken over by his
producer Bernard McGuirk who is a racist, sexist, insulting, and filthy minded jerk.  McGuirk always
brought every converstation down to a gutter level and he was obviously a far right wing pervert.
McGuirk butted into every conversation and basically lead Imus by the nose into disgusting comments.
I got so I couldn't stand to listen to McGuirk's crap and quit watching Imus completely.

Ironically, it was McGuirk who brough Imus down and destroyed his career.  If you listened to the banter
of last week when Imus made his "nappy headed hos" comment you will notice it was McGuirk who first
said "a bunch of hos" and Imus immediately replied with "N H H" without even thinking.  Don Imus would
still be on the air and his show would not have developed the reputation that it has over the past few years
if they had not allowed the sick, twisted, idiot Bernie McGuirk to be a major part of the show.

However, although I don't defend Imus' stupid comments I still think the whole thing has been blown out
of proportion by the media.  Here is an interesting article from the KC Star by African American sportswriter
Jason Whitlock who expresses a suprisingly different point of view that I kind of agree with.

http://www.kansascity.com/182/story/66339.html

 Chet

I predict Imus will be back on the air by June 1.

The infiltration of the federal government by large numbers of people seeking to impose a religious agenda

It's also a story that tends to go underreported...

Subject: Duke v. Rutgers: Who got hurt more?

Bart: I can't read your site much anymore.
Seven years ago I loved reading your comments.
Now, you go off the mark more often than naught.

Oh no, you mean I can't please everyone all the time?

Duke students/lacrosse players were at an off-campus party.
They hired a stripper.
Duke players were know for their swagger and entitlement.

Looks like somebody had already made up their minds.
Maybe you don't think an out-of-control prosecutor who labels 3 men "rapists"
on national TV without the slightest shred of evidence isn't a big problem - I do.

   VERSUS

Rutgers (mostly freshmen) female student athletes playing for the national championship.

Uuuummmmm, let's see.  If I do the math, I come out with the Rutgers female
student athletes suffering more than that of three rich, spoiled white boys whose
planned night of fun didn't come off as usual.

Bart, get a new calculator.
 KR

Yep, you're crazy, all right.
Gee, how much can you hate three strangers for having more money than you?

The men were arrested and booked for rape in front of live TV cameras.
They had a whole town (whole state?) screaming "raping scum" at them for 400 days.

That's a little worse than being called a name by a moronic Republican.

BTW, I haven't changed. If you used to like me but now
"can't read your site much anymore," maybe you changed.

Subject: the iTunes thing

Bart, I too had trouble playing BCR on iTunes only recently (112 and 113)
where it would re-play giant chunks and generally lose track of where it was.
My remedy was to simply play the mp3 using Windows Media Player.

I could investigate further, but my hunch is that iTunes (both the desktop and iPod version)
have a tracking problem with whatever encoder you've been using since maybe show 111 or 112.

My recommendation would be either use a different player,
or right-click on the track in iTunes, and select "Convert Selection to MP3".
This will create another copy of it, but made with iTunes own encoder.
 Rex

Bart, I have iTunes for PC and an iPod and haven't had any problems.
I download the MP3's, import them into iTunes and sync to my iPod so I can listen in the car.

Could it be that PC is better at something than MAC (besides Spreadsheets)?

Subject: Imus

Not that I have the links to prove my point, but if I recollect rightly, Imus' fairly harsh criticism of Clinton
at the 1996 Correspondents' Dinner was widely covered and frequently repeated well into the following week.
Not only did the coverage allow for the usual anti-Clinton snarkiness among the mainstream media, it gave
Imus' career a significant boost. While this Colbert deal is hardly as important as kids dying of malaria,
it is yet more proof (as if we need it at this point) the media is on the side of the people who own the country,
not the rest of us. I don't have a full coverage link of the Imus incident, but here's a clip from the NY Times archive:

(link no longer valid because the Whore NYTimes doesn't want their past on the record)

Don Imus, the radio talk show host, is reaping the rewards of rudeness. Since his remarks about the Clintons,
made to their faces at the Radio and Television Correspondents annual dinner last month, Imus has been picked up
by 10 additional stations. With those 10, Mr. Imus is now heard on 80 stations around the country and has about
10 million listeners each week, says Westwood One, which syndicates the Imus show.

Exploding the Clinton-Did-It Defense
  by  Jerry Sanford

 consortiumnews.com

 Excerpt:
That blatant purge of top federal prosecutors was simply another arrogant and manipulative abuse of power
by the Bush administration, designed to further its efforts to put this country under the control of one political party.

The Congressional Research Service recently issued a report which showed that of 468 U.S. attorney confirmations
over the last 25 years, only 10 left involuntarily.   In other words, the Bush administration fired almost as many U.S.
attorneys in one week as had been let go over the past 25 years. The only apparent "misconduct" of the eight Bush
appointees was their failure to prosecute Democrats before last year's mid-term election.
