Quotes

"Fred Thompson may have hidden depths, but ask yourself this: If he did not look like a basset hound
who had just read 'Old Yeller' - (ha ha) - and if he did not talk like central casting's idea of the god Sincerity,
would anyone think he ought to be entrusted with the nation's nuclear arsenal? He is an actor, and, as a
Hollywood axiom says, 'The key to acting is sincerity -- if you can fake that, you've got it made.' "
-- George Will, gunning for Tennessee Tuxedo WaHoPo

"Hidden depths?"
Does that mean he comes off as shallow?

You'd think after 20 years of lobbying, he could fake that sincerity with no problem.l

Powell Belies 'Commander Guy' Bush
 by Robert Parry

 consortiumnews.com

 Excerpt:
Washington journalists face a tricky dilemma.

One of their all-time favorite "wise men" - Colin Powell - has belied Bush's "commander guy" fiction,
albeit in an understated way. On NBC's "Meet the Press" on June 10, host Tim Russert asked Powell
why his prediction of a troop drawdown by early 2007 hadn't come to pass.

"A different choice was made by the President," Powell answered. "The President received advice
from his military advisers last fall that said, do not send more troops.

"Gen. [John] Abizaid went before the Congress, the commander of Central Command,
and said he had consulted with all his division commanders in Iraq and
all of the senior commanders, and none of them wanted to send additional troops.

"They thought the strategy at that point should be to put the burden on the Iraqis to resolve what I call a civil war."

Too bad the press and the Democrats have given Bush a pass of those lies.
Bush says he's following the recommendations of his gernerals - but he's not -
but the whore press and the sheepish Democrats allow those lies to go unanswered.

The result?

GOP blocks Gonzales no-confidence vote
They had no confidence he'd pass the confidence vote

 Link

 Excerpt:
Republicans blocked a Senate no-confidence vote on Tortureboy Gonzales Monday,
rejecting a Democratic effort to force him from office amid blistering criticism from both parties.

The 53-38 vote to move the resolution to full debate fell seven short of the 60 required. In bringing
the matter up, Democrats dared Republicans to vote their true feelings about a Torture-addicted ass
who has alienated even Bush's strongest defenders by bungling every damn thing he's had a hand in.

Subject: Republican 'logic'

The latest rationalization by the right about global warming is that, yes, they admit, it is happening,
but there is no proof human activity is causing it.

So let me get this right: the party of personal responsibility looks at global warming,
with all the devastation about to happen to the earth and to humankind,
and figured that since it isn't our fault, we don't have to fix it.

Quotes

"She's now running for president, and we felt that people needed to understand how she acts
in the political arena and, and use that as a basis for deciding whether she's qualified to be
president or not. And, you know, in essence, we sort of found that there're two Hillarys.
There's the well-informed, the battle-tested, the diligent senator who does her homework.
And then we found another Hillary where she plays fast and loose with the facts, she won't
admit a mistake, and she sort of, you know, retreats into a shell."

Court to W: Obey the Constitution, Asshole
They say he can't hold suspects forever on the whif of a whim

"Alec Baldwin, held at Gitmo."

 Link

 Excerpt:
The federal Military Commissions Act doesn't strip al-Marri of his constitutional right
to challenge his accusers in court, the judges found in Monday's 2-1 decision.

"Put simply, the Constitution does not allow the President to order the military to seize civilians
residing within the United States and then detain them indefinitely without criminal process,
and this is so even if he calls them 'enemy combatants,'" the court said.

Such detention "would have disastrous consequences for the Constitution - and the country,"
Judge Diana G. Motz wrote in the majority opinion,

Well, well, the judges finally - after four years - remembered we have a Constitution.
Thanks, guys, but where have you been?

Quotes

"Bush remains relevant in Washington only because he is running a war. Having power to
send soldiers to their deaths as commander in chief is a macabre way to remain in the
political mix as your second term wanes -- especially when done against the will of Congress
and most Americans. Majorities in both the House and Senate have voted to wind down the
war in Iraq, and polls show that nearly two-thirds of the public agrees."

Subject: I'm depressed

Three US soldiers were killed and six injured after a suicide bombing caused a bridge across a highway
near the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, to  collapse. The soldiers were manning a checkpoint on top of the bridge
when a car bomb exploded beneath, the US military said.

The attack on Sunday was the latest in a series by Iraqi militants on  bridges.[..]

Sunday's attack on the bridge over the main highway linking Baghdad  to southern Iraq
brought to at least 28 the number of US troops  killed in Iraq so far this month.

Those new Hillary Books
 by Joe Conason

 salon.com

 Excerpt:
All too frequently, they hark back to the clichés, however. Page after page presents us with the
scheming woman whose arrogance and ambition were exceeded only by her incompetence,
and who barely evaded indictment because of her impulse to conceal the truth. Only her almost
superhuman will to achieve power has allowed her and Bill to overcome the consequences of
their character flaws and their troubled partnership -- or so we are urged to believe.

As with all books about Hillary, each of these boasts of the hundreds of interviews and thousands
of documents that undergird their conclusions. Indeed, Bernstein's jacket copy goes so far as to
claim that he "reexamined everything pertinent written about and by Hillary Clinton," which sounds
like a literally impossible task. Both books feature the usual surfeit of mind-reading moments (such as
"Hillary began contemplating" and "Hillary knew ... in her heart"), plus the usual anonymous quotes
(from "a senior aide" or "a top presidential aide" or, somewhat less plausibly, "a Hillary friend" or
"a Hillary confidant") putting her in her place.

After all the shrill calumniation, she remains a highly credible candidate for president.

What?  Calumniation?
Joe sends me to my dictionary - calumniation means slander.

I love what Joe says about Hillary's mind readers.
People read that shit and think, "So that's what Hillary's true motives are."

Hey Bart,

Given your well-publicized views on the Invisible Cloud Being and the dangers of organized religion,
I wonder if you have any thoughts on Wicca or Paganism?  Do you see them as exactly the same?
Do you not have an opinion because it's such a minority?  Especially as the government finally allow
vets to have pentacles on their grave markers after two lawsuits?  I appreciate that you are not an
expert on this but would still welcome any thoughts from

Stuff Happens at Justice

 WaHoPo

 Excerpt:
Monday was just a day like any other at our Department of Justice.  Tortureboy Gonzales said he wasn't
paying close attention to the fact that 53 senators had in essence voted that they had no confidence in him.
At the same time, Solicitor General Paul Clement declined to file a friend-of-the-court brief on the side of
the plaintiffs in an upcoming Supreme Court case that will determine whether Enron's shareholders can receive
any damages from the banks and brokerage houses that supplied the matches when Enron cooked its books.

In choosing not to file a brief, Clement turned down a request from the Securities and Exchange Commission
to have the government intervene on shareholders' behalf.

If I lost money in that Enron collapse I'd be screaming my head off.
Isn't anybody angry?   Where are these people?
Why aren't they protesting the theft of their life savings?

Poll: Most Republicans Reject Evolution
Why go with science when you can go with superstition?

 cbsnews

 Excerpt:
The three Republican presidential candidates who said they do not believe in evolution
may have been taking a safe stance on the issue when it comes to appealing to GOP voters.

A new Gallup poll said that while the country is about evenly split over evolution,
Republicans disbelieve it by more than 2-to-1.

Republicans saying they don't believe in evolution outnumbered those who do 68 to 30.
Democrats believe in evolution 57 to 40 percent, as do independents by 61 to 37 percent.
Those who go to church often are far likelier to reject evolution than those who do not.

Kissyface goes Wild

 Excerpt:
What if Al Gore had won the 2000 presidential election but died in office? Would President Lieberman
have been worse than George W. Bush? His recent actions suggest that he could have descended even
lower in his illogical and immoral responses to the tragedy of 9/11. Although now an independent,
Lieberman provides a cautionary tale for folks who talk of backing "any Democrat" who can win.

At a time when even Bush has recognized the need for negotiations with Iran in order to stabilize Iraq,
where disciples of Tehran's ayatollahs have risen to power, thanks to the U.S. occupation he fervently
supports, Lieberman urges war with Iran. "I think we've got to be prepared to take aggressive military
action against the Iranians to stop them from killing Americans in Iraq," he told CBS on Sunday,
"and to me, that would include a strike over the border into Iran."

Rattling Rusty Sabers

 hammernews.com

 Excerpt:
America has acted duplicitously, even treacherously, in surrounding Russia with NATO - against express promises;
developing new classes of atomic weapons, withdrawing from the ABM treaty, abandoning non-proliferation regimes,
and acting both as if Russia is a has-been paper tiger and yet a continued threat.   But Russia- seeking to reassert her
rightful power and influence, has been too aggressive: doubling energy prices overnight, threatening Europe with a gas
OPEC, bullying foreign companies to sell their hard won stake in Russia, and intimidating Estonia. Buoyed by its recent
wealth and stability, Russia demands respect, but hasn't mastered the crucial difference between engendering it from fear
and creating it from consistency, admiration, and friendship. The fear causes flashbacks to the Soviet era, especially
among the former satellites, who then desperately seek alliances with the West, even if unwise or destabilizing.

Quotes

"We will remember Bush for the Iraq war, of course. But I hope and believe we will give at least
as much weight to his erosion of our nation's fundamental values and basic character. We will
remember him as the president who established a prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, complete
with kangaroo-court military tribunals in which detainees were not allowed to see the alleged
evidence against them...We will remember this whole misguided administration for deciding to
wage the fight against terrorism in a manner that not only mocks our nation's values but also
draws new recruits to the anti-American cause. We will remember this White House for
unwittingly helping the terrorist cause perpetuate itself."

The emperor has spoken

 guardian.co.uk

 Excerpt:
So that's that, then. After a meeting with the Italian prime minister Romano Prodi at the weekend,
Bush announced that it was time to bring the issue of Kosovan independence "to a head".
In other words, Kosovo should become independent even without the approval of the UN security council.
Now the emperor has spoken, is there really any point discussing the future of the disputed Serbian
province any further? Well yes, actually, there is.

What is at stake is not just the illegal seizure from Serbia of the cradle of its national history,
and rewarding the campaign of violence by ex-KLA members which has seen an estimated
200,000 Serbs, Roma, Turks and other non-Albanian groups fleeing or being driven from the
province since 1999. There is also the question of whether one dangerous and insane handjob,
George Bush, has the right to redraw the map of the world in any way it chooses.

Leaving Iraqi Refugees in the Lurch
 by Ivan Eland

Among the many tragedies of the Iraq War has been the brutal ethnic cleansing that has driven
millions of Iraqis from their homes. And like so many of these horrors, George W. Bush doesn't
want to accept responsibility. In this guest essay, Ivan Eland laments this latest failure of the Bush
administration to do the right thing

Helping those people won't put a single dollar in Bush's pocket

so why the hell would Bush bother his simple mind with them?
