"With its two newest members, today's Supreme
Court is moving the right-wing's agenda faster
than we've seen in decades -- slamming the
courthouse doors in the faces of ordinary people,
favoring big businesses over civil rights,
and undermining protections for women and the environment.
Because the next president will likely nominate
at least one Supreme Court justice, which could shape
the balance of power on the Court for years
to come, the stakes in the 2008 election could not be higher."
-- John Edwards, saying what
Gore and Kerry should've said while running for the White House.

Cheney not
Executive?
by Stephen Crockett
consortiumnews.com
Excerpt:
The recent claim by Dick Cheney to have both
executive privilege and not to be part of the executive
branch of government seems to amount to a claim
that Cheney is simply above the rule of law.
It appears that both Bush and Cheney think they
rule by divine right like the absolute monarchs of
medieval Europe or the dictators of the old Soviet
Bloc. Both need to be impeached.
Until they are removed from office, the media,
Congress and the courts should be aggressively
investigating, exposing and opposing their abuses
of power. Bush has ignored the rule of law repeatedly.
Maybe we could get Nancy Pelosi to explain again how impeachment is
off the table?
What crimes will it take to get the cure back on the table?

Why Hillary
Scares Me
by Mike Gravel, candidate for president
wehateclintons.com
Excerpt:
Our founders' legacy did not stop Hillary from
voting for the Patriot Act and then supporting its renewal
in 2006 despite revelations that the government
was using it to infringe on the very liberties that our founders
held sacred. Where was her commitment to our
founders when she voted to gut our habeas corpus protections?
As for cronyism -- Hillary has repeatedly authorized
billions that the Pentagon gave in no-bid contracts to Halliburton.
Even though the Democrats have been in control
of Congress for months, they still haven't summoned Wolfowitz,
Rumsfeld and the other usual suspects to account
for the missing millions in reconstruction funding.
So, he's charging her with everything the Democrats have done or failed
to do.
I guess you could make a case that, as the most powerful Democrat,
it was her place to lead,
but she's only held that position since she announced in what, late
January, and now her
every move is seen as a campaign tactic.
It might've been more honest to say, "Why the
Democrats scare me?"
but Arianna can make more money with "Hillary
scares me," so they went with that.
After all, wehateclintons.com
has a reputation to uphold.
If they accused Kerry, Biden and Dodd of those "crimes," everybody
would yawn.
It would seem that Gravel is tired of polling at one percent.
He's going all in, hoping to create a splash so somebody notices him.

If Reid
were Rove
regressiveantidote.net
Excerpt:
If Reid were Rove, Republicans would tremble
at the prospect of indulging their worst tendencies,
however tempting, knowing that a mountain of
woe would be dumped on their heads were they to
trash the institutions of American democracy,
knowing that they would be ridiculed mercilessly if they
tried hawking their unpatriotic and hypocritical
lies, knowing that they would be pummeled into ER
cases with do not resuscitate orders if they
advocated politics which were in fact detrimental to most
voters, in order to benefit elites. If Reid were
Rove, the Republican Party would either change its politics,
or it would have representation in Congress truly
proportional to the one-half of one percent of Americans
whose interests it actually represents. If Reid
were Rove, there'd be some Republican clown - maybe
Joe Lieberman - from Greenwich, Connecticut in
the House, and that'd be the entirety of the national
GOP congressional delegation."
But no, Reid isn't Rove, Reid is a mouse.
Mice run and hide, and then they apologize.

The Hatred
of Women in US
truthout.org
Excerpt:
The first time I witnessed violence against a
woman, I was 17, living next door to a stock yard butcher,
his wife and baby, on the South Side of Chicago.
"I hate you!" followed by the B-word, then flesh
hitting flesh - the butcher was at it again.
After entering their apartment, I managed to
wrestle the meat cleaver from him.
When the cops arrived, *I* was accused of molesting
his wife. And had she not spoken up, I would have
gone to the notorious Cook County jail, for attempted
rape - black teenager in a white couple's apartment.
A woman is beaten every 9 seconds in this country;
more than 3 women are killed by their spouse daily.
Lesson: Women are worthless and it's OK to beat them up.

Beating
Victim Upset by Sentence
He
beat her for three hours...
Link
Excerpt:
On September 5, 2005 Suzy Taylor was beaten for
nearly three hours by her husband, Randy.
Randy greeted her by hitting her in the back
of her head with the butt of a shotgun, and so it began.
He pleaded guilty and a judge gave him five years
in prison. He served one year and on Monday
asked the judge to reduce that sentence. His
attorney argued that Taylor has behaved while in jail
and this was his first-ever arrest. Prosecutors
argued he should serve every day because it was a
very brutal crime. The judge agreed to shorten
the sentence.
The judge said no amount of prison time
could compensate the victim.
Well, isn't that true in every murder case, too?
Why put a murderer in jail? His victim is still
dead, right judge?
Lesson: Women are like cattle or pets. It's not right to
abuse them,
but if you do it's OK because, after all, they're just women.
Add the irrational hatred of Paris Hilton and Hillary Clinton to the
mix.
Why is it OK to beat up a woman in 2007?

Supreme
Court Denies Equal Pay
They're just women - they should get paid like a man?
now.org
Excerpt:
The Roberts court strikes again. Tuesday's Supreme
Court decision dealt a near-fatal blow
to remedy pay discrimination based on sex, race,
national origin, and other protected grounds.
In a 5-4 decision that turns our understanding
of employment discrimination on its head, the Court ruled
that a Title VII complaint must be filed within
180 days of the specific action that sets discriminatory pay,
regardless of its ongoing and continuing discriminatory
impact on the employee. As a result, many victims
of pay discrimination will be left without an
effective remedy, even though their rights have been violated.
So, if a woman gets screwed over many years, she's
powerless to get justice
because she didn't sue within 180 of each screwing?
Lesson: Women are lesser citizens, so it's OK to pay men more
- because they have full citizenship.

Subject: the future
Hey Bart: I love the site.
There is always something here to piss me off.
One idea I think you should put on your radar
for the future is
what happens AFTER Bush and Co. leave office?
I wonder if any of the presidential candidates
are considering a pardon for
Bush administration officials (for crimes they
"may or may not have committed").
I'm sure all of the Republicans are and none of
the Democrats.
I also wonder if we as a nation have any recourse,
or if there is any
precedent for finally holding these kind of people
accountable.

Lugar says
Iraq plan not working
Link
Excerpt:
Sen. Richard Lugar, a senior Republican and a
reliable vote for President Bush on the war,
said Monday that Bush's Iraq strategy was not
working and that the U.S. should downsize the military's role.
The unusually blunt assessment deals a political
blow to Bush, who has relied heavily on GOP support to
stave off anti-war legislation.
It also comes as a surprise. Most Republicans
have said they were willing to wait until September
to see if Bush's recently ordered troop buildup
in Iraq was working.
"In my judgment, the costs and risks of continuing
down the current path outweigh the potential benefits
that might be achieved," Lugar, R-Ind., said
in a Senate floor speech. "Persisting indefinitely with the surge
strategy will delay policy adjustments that have
a better chance of protecting our vital interests over the long term."
After all these years of lying, Lugar starts to tell the truth.
Can we assume he's up for re-election next year?

Bush: We
are above the law
latimes.com
Excerpt:
A federal watchdog agency planned to inspect
the president's executive offices in the White House in 2005
for evidence of suspected leaks of classified
information, but it was rebuffed by Bush administration officials,
congressional investigators have been told.
The report of the White House's refusal to be
inspected comes amid criticism from congressional Democrats
of how Bush signed an executive order requiring
federal agencies to submit to independent oversight of their
handling of classified information, but did not
enforce it for his office or that of Dick Cheney.
The blocked inspection was described in an April
23 letter to Andrew Card from Henry Waxman,
who provided a copy of the letter to the Los
Angeles Times on Monday.
White House spokeswhore Dana Perino told reporters
Monday that the president considered his office
and that of the vice president exempt from his
directive.
Oversight?
We don't need no stinking oversight!
We're above the law because the Democrats refuse to stop us.

Subject: More confusion for school
systems
The announcement by Vice President Cheney that
he is not part of the executive branch of government
is going to be another burden on the school systems
because text books will have to be rewritten.
States that passed laws to remove evolution from
science books and those who want to teach
"Creation Science" and "Intelligent Design" will
now have to revise text books so they can teach
that the Vice President is not part of the Executive
Branch of government.
After all "Checks and Balances" is just a theory
because if there really were checks and balances in the
Constitution the Congress wouldn't sit back and
let Cheney declare he is above the law and get away with it.
I think that Nancy Pelosi's decision to declare
impeachment is off the table is as outrageous as Cheney's decision.
Impeachment isn't an option. Impeachment is a
duty the Congress is required to perform when Bush and Cheney
declare themselves kings.

The CNN slut, 48, claims she was secretly married

Subject: Marijuana
Hi Bart,
You're absolutely right that studies like the
White House one are complete BS.
It's like those arguments that marijuana is a
"gateway" drug.
There's actually a technical term for the logical
fallacy those arguments employ:
post hoc ergo propter hoc or "after, therefore
caused by."
(can using Latin make you seem smarter?)
All the "study" shows is that people who end up
in gangs typically took marijuana at some point.
This does not imply any sort of a necessary connection,
one way or the other.
To say that one event comes after another is
to say almost nothing of importance.
After the sun goes down I get tired, but the
sun actually going down does not make me tired.
Steph
I'll bet 99% of gang bangers drank milk as kids.
I guess that makes milk a gateway drug to leading
a thug life?

How many gang members do I know?
