"Huckabee represents the future of Rove's sectarian, big government party, and Giuliani
represents
the conservative past. The only thing keeping Rudy alive is his appeal to the
"torture-them" wing of the GOP.
So the two natural developments of the Bush years - massive spending and untrammeled executive war-power
- find their two representatives. And if you're a traditional conservative, you feel like slashing your wrists."

As a senior member of national security oversight committees, Hyde helped cover up criminal
and political wrongdoing by the Reagan-Bush administrations in the 1980s and early 1990s.
In August 1986, for instance, Hyde was one of the ranking members of the House Intelligence
Committee who trooped down to the White House to question Oliver North about press accounts
linking him to a secret operation to supply the Nicaraguan contra rebels in defiance of the law.
After North and his boss, John Poindexter, denied the allegations, Hyde joined Dick Cheney and
Lee Hamilton, D-Whitewash, in rejecting a bill that would have authorized a formal investigation.
Later that day, since I had co-authored an AP story citing 24 sources about North’s secret network,
one of Hamilton’s aides contacted me to say that the committee had sided with the “honorable men”
at the White House over our 24 sources.

"I'm really astonished at the incompetence of CNN. One is a mistake. Two is a pattern.

John Edwards talked with Keith Olbermann on Countdown about his take on the campaign so far, Bill Clinton’s
statement that he was against the war, how out of touch the Republicans are
with mainstream Americans and
of course, the cavalcade of gifts they handed the Democrats in last night’s debate.
Edwards and Olbermann made light of way the right (I’m looking at you, Michelle Malkin, although it made
Joe Scarborough an angry little Republican this morning as well) is going nutty over the fact that a Hillary
volunteer–who, by the way, was a registered Republican and a member of the Log Cabin Republicans and
has contributed no money to the Clinton campaign–was allowed to ask a question during the debate last night.
As, Keith put it, if the Republicans can’t handle the Democrats, how can they handle Al Qaeda?resid

Last Monday, Erin Burnett let loose with her real feelings and laid it on the line right on the air,
calling Bush a "monkey" during a business news piece about the Nicolas Sarkozy visit to China.
Burnett said that she couldn't see how anyone couldn't have a "man-crush on that man," in an apparent
allusion to French President Sarkozy. The video on the screen at the time was a shot of Bush and Sarkozy
walking side-by-side, with Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel just behind them. After her "man-crush"
comment, Burnett made quick to say that she didn't mean "the monkey" and that she meant "the other one."
This caused Joe Scarborough and his co-hosts to wonder what the heck she was talking about? "The monkey? Who's the monkey? What's she talking about?" the clueless Scarborough asked.
Bart, I just finished reading your back issue of "You're one out of forty, stupid," and I have one word to say: Genius.
While nearly all of your rebuttals are dead on, I just wanted to comment one in particular: Number 3.
Please somebody tell me how this delusional freak (Koresh) who stockpiled weapons for the coming apocalypse,
"annulled" legal marriages between his cult members so that he could engage in sex with whomever he wanted,
including 14-year old girls, physically and mentally tortured children, and committed other criminail acts could be
construed as a martyr. It makes me sick to think that Clinton/Reno are trashed for their handling of this case, but
nobody seems to want to point the blame at the murdering psychopath and his twisted followers who refused to
let children out before the final seige, then burned them in a Jonestown-esque finally. If Bush had order this seige,
he would be praised for being tough on terror, yet Clinton/Reno are torn apart as baby killers, and likened to the SS.

The report details a "plethora of inadequacies" in the agency, including:
•Inadequate inspections of manufacturers, noting that foodmakers are inspected every 10 years.
•A "badly broken" food-import system and food supply "that grows riskier each year." In the past 35 years,
FDA inspections of the food supply have dropped 78% due to soaring numbers of products and inadequate FDA funding.
•A depleted FDA staff, which is about the same size as it was 15 years ago despite huge growth in agency
responsibilities. Instead of being proactive, the agency is often in "fire-fighting" mode.
•A workforce with a "dearth" of scientists who understand emerging technologies. Turnover rates in some
scientific positions at the FDA run twice that of other government agencies.
•An "obsolete" information-technology system.

Hey Bart,
A few days ago, a friend emailed me about Hyde (R - Asswipe) dying. I responded by
quoting
a favorite saying of my long-dead grandmother- "Good riddance to bad rubbish".
And now I see it on Thursday's page. I'd never heard it used outside my family.
Is there any chance you got it from some previous correspondence from me?
Or do you have it from some other source? Or is it much more common than I thought?
I'm just curious about how widespread the usage of this phrase might be.
Let me know, if you have the time.
Dan L
I've heard that before, but a reader used it so I published it.
"Pity poor Harry Reid. Back in April, he said the war in Iraq 'lost.' Two months before Petraeus had
in place the reinforcements he needed to implement his bold, new strategy - which included a 'surge' of
operations against al-Qaeda forces in Iraq - Reid also said: 'The surge is not accomplishing anything.'
Since then, it has become increasingly obvious that Reid was wrong, that the 'surge' has been
accomplishing nothing less than the defeat of al-Qaeda in the very heart of the Arab world. Petraeus'
troops appear to be making progress against Iranian-backed militias as well. As a result, the threat of
an Iraqi civil war has diminished and there is no 'resistance' movement to speak of - not of Saddam
loyalists and certainly not of patriotic Iraqi nationalists." -- Clifford May, saying the war's been won and the troops will be home for Christmas, Link

Hey Bart, fyi, here is the Ground Zero discussion of why Democrats..... ENABLE the FASCIST COUP in America, which is the bush-cheney-gop administration. (What I called, back in 1995, "the SUPER-TRIFECTA of government control" - control of HOUSE, SENATE, White House, SUPREME COURT, Federal Judiciary, government agencies, Fourth Estate (corporate media); control of the Corporations which support the kleptocratic GOP agenda, and of course state and local governments which bow to the "CW" Conventional Wisdom as well. I predicted all this back in 1995... long before Idiot Gore selected Joe Lieberthug to be his running mate, long before Gore and Lieberthug PRETENDED NOT TO NOTICE Texas Gov. bush SLASHING pre-school, after-school, and Health Care funding for Texas' POOREST CHILDREN, so he could GIVE TAX CUTS to Texas' WEALTHIEST corporations.

Just remember the good ol` 60's hippie days. An exciting LSD era when the youth of this nation popped
its cork in front of Richard Nixon and God, and actually did something positive to change our wicked ways.
A better day existed when groovey strands of long hair served as some sort of crazy miracle potion empowering
the strength of men. The longer it grew, the more you became a freak-flag Samsonite. We belonged to a kind of
'hip' Lord of the Rings fellowship that saved the day -- at least for a while -- and everyone knew without question
what their post entailed.
And all the other colorful mojos didn’t hurt the process either -- bell-bottom pants, psychedelic shirts, Mexican serapes,
Navajo headbands, luminous body paints, mini-skirts, love-beads, love making, wake-up bells, feathers forever in all
shapes and colors and flowered friendliness that definitely changed the way the whole world thought about teenagers.
A thrilling time when virtually everyone seemed to find their own voice. Gee, I sure miss the good ol' days...
