Quotes
"When asked if he thought it would be legal
to torture a detainee's child, David Addington
responded, "I'm not here to render legal advice
to your committee. You do have attorneys
of your own to give you legal advice."...Addington,
who says he was involved in the CIA's
interrogation torture
for fun program, told lawmakers that he wouldn't
"be responsible ...
(in any sense) legal or moral" if the agency's
techniques are found to be unlawful. This makes
us wonder if anyone in this administration
will ever be held accountable for anything at all."

After almost eight years of constant crimes and Constitution trampling,
an American newspaper has decided to raise their voice against
the Bush bastards?
How charming...

Mentally
Ill Republicans
Link
Excerpt:
Conservative republicans suffer from a form of
mental illness. Americans have watched them embrace
family values and discover ethics, while stealing
an election and contriving circumstances for starting wars.
They have worked tirelessly to undermine the
American Constitution while frantically waving the flag.
They firmly believe in the privatization of government
and consistently ignore the inconvenient history
of the American taxpayer bailout of one failed/scandalized
corporation after the next.
Republican mental illness manifests itself in
the duality that conservatives want to turn the clock back
to mom, apple pie, and that good, ol' time religion,
while
unmercifully exploiting every natural
resource until the ravaged earth will no longer
support life. Turning yet another profit
takes precedence over their own survival.
That's most obvious when you look at global warming.
We once celebrated Robert
Peary for being the first man to reach the North Pole.
These days, you just hop on a boat and row there because the ice is
gone.
It might make sense if starving people needed to pump oil out of the
ground to eat,
but what's crazy is billionaires who want more millions are
destroying our planet.
Bush & Cheney had more money than they could ever spend, but it
wasn't enough
so they conspired with other crooks to steal power so they could steal
more money.

"I can't be the only one with less passion,
focus and energy for this election than I had
a couple of months ago. I'm sure part of it
is simply a natural withdrawal from the drama
of the primaries on both sides; part of it
relief at the departure of the Clintons; part just
exhaustion from a period of intense focus...the
rejection of the Clintons, with all their baggage,
all their capacity to jump-start the culture

also an enormous, and by no means inevitable,
step forward - and away from the worst of the past."

McCain can't
Escape Bush
Link
Excerpt:
When McCain clinched the GOP nomination, it was
widely believed that his relative popularity among
moderates and independents may well save the
party from a Bush-caused bloodbath in November.
Things, however, do not quite seem to be working
out like that: Texas, Georgia, Indiana, North Carolina,
Alaska, Mississippi, and South Carolina are toss-ups
or barely leaning to McCain, and dozens of House
and Senate races in even the reddest of states
are in play.
The horror of Bush's presidency pushed away voters
in the political center and now McCain is finishing
the job, causing shrinkage at the far-right of
the GOP while compounding the losses among independents.
Rather than rallying disaffected Republicans
and unaffiliated voters, McCain's candidacy is turning off
the few remaining GOP loyalists. The result:
a party with which only 25% of voters identify.
You'd think McCain's only chance would be to refute Bush's stupidity
and say,
"I'm going to do almost everything different
than Bush did," but nooooooooooooo.
Stubbornly, he wants to make his presidency Bush's third term
and nobody wants that.
How stupid is McCain that he can't see that?

Subject: Wes Clark
"As he's said many times before, Obama honors
and respects McCain's service,
and of course he rejects yesterday's
statement by General Clark."
-- Obama campaign 6/30/08
I believe Wes Clark was simply pointing out that
saying McCain's service qualifies him to be
Commander in Chief is like saying being locked
in a trunk qualifies you to drive in NASCAR.
What's WRONG with these people???
GDewan
I think Obama's camp made a mistake rejecting
what Clark said.
All Clark did was tell the truth - that joining
the military and getting shot down
and captured is no guarantee that you'd
make a great president.
Hell, der Monkey has eight year's experience in
the Oval Office
and he's not qualified to be president, either.
Obama said, "Nobody
should devalue McCain's service,"
but nobody did that - so why would Obama scold
Clark for speaking the truth?
Sidebar:
One thing I don't like about Obama's camp is
that "a staffer" will speak for him and when
Obama wants to change his mind on something,
he says "that staffer" should not have been
speaking for him because he was "unfamiliar"
with Obama's position.

Excerpt:
Tim the Mindreader has learned that Clinton
is so bitter about Obama's victory
that he has told friends that Obama will have
to beg for his wholehearted support.
Gee, another fabricated story about the Clintons
that's taken as gospel and
distributed worldwide as though it was real journalism
- don't we ever f-ing learn?
Tim the Mindreader says Clinton is still
very bitter that Obama beat his wife.
Pure horseshit
- absolutely pure - and still the bastards run it like it
was news.
Campaign insiders say...
The Whore Telegraph has learned...
A senior Democrat who worked for Mr Clinton
has revealed...
A second source said...
It has long been known that Mr Clinton...
One person told me that Bill said...
Another Democrat said...
When you see unsourced claims like that - you're
getting pure horseshit.

Subject: get rid of Biden,
too
Leahy seems like a better Dem senator than
some, although I totally agree with you on him (and them)
laying down for Bush 1, Bush 2, and Reagan
on judicial appointments. But Joe Biden is much worse!
Biden chaired the Judicial Committee from
87 through 95, when Kennedy (Reagan nomination), Souter,
and that paragon of voting exactly as Scalia
does, Clarence Thomas (both Bush 1 nominees) were confirmed.
Biden could have killed any of these nominations,
but Thomas, who was quite young at the time and we're
likely to be cursed with for another couple
decades, really stands out. This guy has the credentials to be a
Supreme?
Kennedy is another who should have been
rejected. He's now the swing vote on many cases and sides with
the rightwingers, so we have a bunch of
5-4 decisions restricting our rights to privacy but expanding the right
to have lots of guns to kill each other
and ourselves.
Biden's been a disgrace on Judiciary.
And the Dem Senate Campaign Committee choosing him for frontman
in their appeals for money is downright
stupid--I guess they don't think their supporters pay attention to this
stuff.
Peace,
Matthew Clark

Google Kills
Anti-Obama Sites
I don't like that - what's next?
Link
Excerpt:
It looks like Google has officially joined the
Obama campaign and decided that its contribution
would be to shut down any blog on the Google
owned Blogspot.com blogging system that has
an anti-Obama message. Yes, it sure seems that
Google has begun to go through its many thousands
of blogs to lock out the owners of anti-Obama
blogs so that the noObama message is effectively
squelched. Thus far, Google has terminated the
access by blog owners to 7 such sites and the list
may be growing. Boy, it must be nice to have
an ally powerful enough to silence opponents!
**UPDATE**
I have been hesitant to post this update because
I cannot find a link to prove the claim,
but it is starting to look like this is a concerted
effort by Obama supporters.
They went to the Blogspot addresses found on the
site of the NoObama coalition called
Just Say No Deal and constantly hit the "mark
as spam" link so that Google's Blogger
would be flooded with spam warnings. This caused
Google/Blogger to freeze the sites marked.
Apparently, this campaign merely took advantage
of Google/Blogger's flawed system of finding
spam blogs. So, it looks like what we have here
is an Obama dirty trick to shut down political
opposition. Looks like Obmatons aren't much for
that whole democracy thing, eh?
Damn, earlier this year, this could've happened
to the Tequila Treehouse.

Subject: Your site is blocked
by Marriott hotels...
Bart, I was at a Marriott Courtyard recently,
and there are computers in the lobby for guests.
I could get to almost all sites on the Internet
except for bartcop.com, buzzflash.com, some articles
on consortiumnews.com and counterpunch.org
It would bring up the screen for about two seconds,
then suddenly say "Sorry, this site cannot be
displayed."
Just to check, I went to freerepublic.com and
found out that Marriott is not blocking that site.
It's clearly leftwing sites that are blocked.
I wrote the manager of that particular Marriott
and also complained to the corporation, but no response,
of course. I went back a few weeks later, and
nothing had changed. (I just sneaked into the lobby and
used the computer.) Same results: left-leaning
sites blocked, right-wing sites allowed.
Your website must be one scary site if it has
to be shielded from the eyes
of those who go into a Mormon-owned hotel...
Sam
It's always been that way. Businesses and our military

Obama To
Expand Bush's Faith-Based Programs
Link
Excerpt:
Reaching out to religious voters, Obama is announcing
plans to expand Bush's program
steering federal social service dollars to religious
groups and - in a move sure to cause
controversy - support some ability to hire and
fire based on faith.
"The challenges we face today ... are simply too
big for government to solve alone,"
Obama was to say, according to The Whore AP.
"We need all hands on deck."
But Obama's support for letting religious charities
that receive federal funding consider
religion in employment decisions could invite
a protest from those in his own party who
view such faith requirements as discrimination.

from Kos
So many of you are upset that I pulled back
my credit card last night,
making a last minute decision to hold back
on a $2,300 contribution to Obama.
Let me explain further:
Obama's had a rough couple of weeks.
First, he reversed course and capitulated on
FISA, not just turning back on the Constitution,
but on the whole concept of "leadership".
Personally, I like to see presidents who
1) lead, and 2) uphold their promises to protect
the Constitution.
Then, he took his not-so-veiled swipe at MoveOn
in his "patriotism" speech.
Finally, he reinforced right-wing talking points
that Wes Clark had impugned
McCain's military service when, in reality,
Clark had done no such thing.
All of a sudden, there was a lot of cowering
when, just days ago, we got to read this:
When asked how Mr. Obama might respond to harsh
attacks from Republicans, suggesting
that Democrats have "cowered" in the past,
Mr. Obama replied, "Yeah, I don't do cowering."
Could've fooled me, and maybe he is.
The great and powerful Kos is turning on Obama, too?
Granted, Obama is making some strange moves, but whatever happened
to loyalty?

Bartcop Radio Show 142
I knew the roofers were coming (Hail totalled our roof) and being
a dumb-ass,
I thought it might be fun to finish the show while they were working
on the roof
but there are four men with hammers beating on the roof like it was
surround-sound.
Like Frank said, "The torture never stops."
When we saw Susan McDougal, someone asked what the worst part of prison

but this has to be worse.
It sounds like I'm in a car rolling down a 100-mile long hill.
They hammered until after 9 PM last night and they started again at
7:20 this morning.
I can't stand to be in Casa de Bart - I'll go see some

BCR 142
only needs a couple of hours work but they won't stop hammering
until Thursday night so, with some luck, I should be able to finish
it Friday.
Say a prayer for Bart the cat.

louder.

Bart, you wrote:
> Jeff, your Dodd support is justified IF

no better than those who voted for it.
I disagree with your logic- he would filibuster
if he could but the spineless Dems
caved on cloture last week (means no one is allowed
to filibuster now)
He filibustered when he could and if all he can
do now is vote against it
then he should vote against it. I will
not count him among the weak sisters
who wet their pants every time a Republican says

Angelina
Jolie's "Wanted"
The movie is OK, the highlight is a one-second nude shot of Jolie
with the hundred tattoos on her back. Maybe Brad has an ink fetish?
But one major flaw is this: Whenever you have a movie,
the director needs to explain clearly if you have space monkeys
or not.
Early in the move a man flies - they didn't explain or give a
reason - he just flew,
so that led me to believe we had a space monkey movie
on our hands, which is fine.
Then later, Jolie tells Nicky Newguy to make his bullets curve
when he shoots.
He says he doesn't know how to do that, so she tells him "Concentrate,"
and after that scolding he could make bullets curve - and curve
sharply.
But now that we know we have space monkeys - what are the rules?
If gravity is a sometimes thing, what else only works
sometimes?
In the gravity-optional world, does dying mean you're dead?
If you like Jolie, you might like this movie,
but if you're looking for an exciting action film, see "Iron
Man," instead.
I haven't see it yet, but it has to be better than "Wanted."
I may see several movies today.

Obama takes
swipe at MoveOn
Link
Excerpt:
Obama on Monday seemed to take a direct swipe
at MoveOn.org, which endorsed his candidacy
earlier this year and was at times instrumental
to his organization in several key battleground states.
In a speech designed to combat charges he lacks
patriotism, Obama sharply condemned organizations
that use "these old, threadbare arguments" to
level criticisms and specifically pointed to MoveOn.org's
controversial newspaper ad last fall that attacked
the top U.S. general in Iraq, David Petraeus.
Why is he alienating so many allies at once?
Most candidates wait until after they're elected to piss off their
donors.

Judge to
Der Fuhrer: Got evidence?
Link
Excerpt:
In reversing a military tribunal's determination
that a Chinese detainee was an "enemy combatant,"
a federal appeals court criticized the government's
evidence and compared its legal theories to a
nonsensical 19th-century poem.
The three judge panel wrote that tribunals and
courts must be able to assess whether evidence
is reliable before determining the fate of detainees.
That did not happen in the case of Huzaifa Parhat,
a Chinese Uighur determined to be an enemy combatant
by a tribunal that relied heavily on
questionable evidence in classified documents,
the appeals court found.
The ruling, the first successful appeal of a detainee's
designation as an enemy combatant,
ordered the government to release, transfer or
hold a new hearing for Parhat.
