McCain Displays Credentials as Obama Relaxes
Excerpt:
For the last several days, Obama has seemed to
fade from the scene while on vacation as McCain
has seized nearly every opportunity to display
his foreign policy credentials on the Georgia conflict.
Only once, at the beginning of the week, did
Obama discuss the fighting in public, when he emerged
from his beachfront rental home to condemn Russia's
escalation, in a way that seemed timed for the
evening television news. He took no questions
whose answers might demonstrate command of the issue.
McCain and his surrogates, however, have discussed
the situation nearly every day on the campaign trail,
often taking a hard line against Russia to the
point of his declaring the other day, "We are all Georgians."
It is as if the candidates' images have been
reversed within a matter of a few weeks. When Obama was
overseas last month, McCain's foreign policy
bona fides seemed diminished, if only because he could not
attract the news media attention received by
Obama. Now, Mr. Obama's voice seems muted at a time
when much of the world has been worriedly watching
the conflict.
I wish we could get Obama more involved in this
campaign.
He seems to think the fight has already been
either won or lost.

Catholic Budget Woes
Excerpt:
The archdiocese's financial troubles began in
large part with the clergy sexual abuse crisis
that erupted in 2002. According to the Church,
they spent $136 million as of last summer
to settle claims by 1,015 victims abused by Boston
priests.
They now faces about 70 remaining claims from
people who say they were abused by priests,
down from about 130 outstanding claims a year
ago.
The archdiocese said it cut the operating loss
of its central administration to $2 million in 2007,
down from $9 million in fiscal 2006. But the
archdiocese said it expects to lose $4 million in 2008
and $2 million in fiscal 2009 before balancing
its budget in 2010.
Wouldn't it be cheaper to stop raping those kids?

I missed that Saturday night "interview"
with McCain and Obama, but caught some excerpts.
In one, McCain talked about being tortured
in Vietnam - saying the Vietnamese guards tied
his hands behind his back in a way that
forced his head down between his knees and McCain
said he and his fellow POWS were left that
way for hours.
He called it "torture," but when WE do it
to helpless Afghani goat herders,
we call it "stress positions" and pretend
it's just a minor inconvenience.
Either stress positions are torture or they're
not, but why is it torture when it's done
to our people but it's merely "enhanced
interrogation" when we do it to others?
If McCain was half a man, he'd admit Bush
led America into torture
and he'd demand an immediate halt to all
American-led torture.
We don't need four more years of 'American
loves torture.'

Nobody else would bring what Hillary does to
the ticket. So why is there so much opposition, even among
Democrats, to her nomination? There are three
reasons I hear, from my radio listeners and others: Hillary was
mean to Obama during the primaries; Hillary still
hasn't fully embraced Obama; and Hillary brings too much
negative baggage, especially husband Bill. Come
on, let's get real...
Isn't it obvious?
Among Obama supporters, there's more than a touch
of sour grapes in those arguments against Hillary. Even
worse, they're all focused on yesterday, not
tomorrow. To allow past differences or personal pique to dictate
the strategy of the general election campaign
would be a colossal mistake. Again, the only questions now are:
How is Obama going to win in November? And
who will best help Obama win?
Looking at it coldly in terms of winning -- based
on her experience in the White House and Senate,
her popularity, her skills as a campaigner, her
proven vote-getting ability -- Hillary Clinton's the one.
If Obama chooses to run without Hillary, what will his future be if
he loses? Hillary would win
the 2012 nomination and the odds of her picking a former loser as her
VP are slim-to-none.
Is Obama too young to go "all in" with his political career?
Or, he could win without her and "turn the page" on the Clintons.
Should Obama pick Hillary as his VP?

Subject: the military mind
Hey Bart,
I'm a huge fan with no funds, but I'm hoping that
will change, and I promise you'll get a slice of the pie
when the ship comes in, as you've been entertaining
and assisting me for years in maintaining my sanity.
I was a USASA (supposedly Army, but actually NSA,
little did I know) dood from 1965 to 1969,
and I can tell you this about the military "mind":
the guys who wanted to stay in after their first enlistments
(or draftments, if you will) were up were nothing
but followers. They feared being discharged, because
they couldn't imagine structuring their own lives.
That's the problem with a "volunteer" army.
If anyone were to ask me, I'd tell him or her
it was simply time to do away with armies, but if we had
to have one, there would have to be an impartial
draft, without exemptions (see Prick Cheeny), period.
How much money could we spend improving the quality
of everyone's lives if we weren't in the business
of making war? What is our
army's carbon footprint, for example?
I'm not against our soldiers, duh, I was one of
them when I was young, after all,
but I really object to their being misused. OK,
enough said.

Hey Bart greetings from Florida;
I do not know how Pew does their 'research' but
most polling is done over the phone, and only on land lines.
That leaves out a bunch of people, mostly young
people, who rely on their cell phones, and have no land lines.
I believe all of these polls are grossly underestimating
the number of people who intend to vote for Obama.
This block of voters is also less likely to be
racist than the older generations who tend to have land lines.
Is there a college dorm in this country that still
has telephones in the rooms?
Or a college student NOT relying on a cell?
Besides, such polls are meaningless and the 'undecideds'
have yet to decide...
McCain needs every one of those if he even wants
to get close enough to steal it
(isn't this 'even in the polls' nonsense just
to set us up for that 'close' victory? )

I know you don't like hearing about we, who, may
or may not vote for Obama
based on the Obama supporters' marginalization
of us during the primary.
Until the primary, I had no idea that Dems were
so misogynistic.
Now folks like me are left with the dilemma:
Vote for Obama or you are voting for McSame.
That's no dilemma - you vote for Obama.
But, I don't understand why I should vote for
a guy who allowed misogyny and race-baiting to go
on during his campaign with a fellow Democrat
. . . and now is crying how bad the Right Wing is to him
(yes, you warned and warned about this because
you rightly saw Hillary as the best candidate).
Finally, we get to recognize Hillary's accomplishment
at (gasp) the Democratic Convention.
Wow, what a concept! Recognizing a former first
lady, who is now a Senator, and who almost
made it to the Dem nomination for president!
Where do these Hillary haters come from? What
drives them?
How were they able to marginalize me and my ilk
so effectively?
Bottom Line: They have themselves to blame, especially Donna Brazille, if Obama loses.
