Biden Schools
Young Palin
Link
Excerpt:
Biden and Palin both buffed their blue-collar
credentials. They told stories of personal woe.
Biden referenced tough times on streets of Scranton
and Wilmington. Palin recalled going without
health-care coverage. Biden's voice caught as
he spoke of caring as a single parent for an injured child.
If they walked the same stylistic line when it
came to trying to out-populist one another, however,
the candidates divided on the issues. And that
is how Biden prevailed.
Sure, but I'll bet the brain-dead right thought she hit a Home Run.

This Debate
Was No Contest
Link
Excerpt:
Sarah Palin's high-energy performance in the
vice-presidential debate was the most glaring demonstration
- since George W. Bush's performances in 2000
- of how little you can get away with knowing and still survive
one of these things, especially if the rules
limit the cross-examination as severely as they did in this debate.
Her relentless opacity was impressive. She refused
to answer the questions where she hadn't been prepped
with answers and when Biden pointed out that
an early question had been on deregulation not taxes, she flashed:
"I may not answer the questions the way you and
the moderator want to hear, but I'm gonna talk straight
to the American people."
Translation:
I don't know very much about the world or how
government works,
but I remember most of the one liners McCain's
handlers fed me.
Talk straight she didn't, with only a few exceptions.
She talked talking points. And when the talking points
concerned areas where she didn't know diddly,
she didn't talk them very convincingly. Indeed, there were
times I got the distinct impression that she
didn't understand the points she was talking about (on the VP's
constitutional powers, for example).
Joe Biden, by contrast, demonstrated a real knowledge
of the issues in question.
If we were picking a Chairman for th Picnic Committee, I might vote
for Palin
because she looks like she knows how to make a bad-ass chicken salad
sandwich.
But since we're talking about electing the people who'll drive our planet,
let's go ahead and elect a couple of thinkers like Obama and
Biden.

Cereal made
special for Americans
Link
Excerpt:
Some breakfast cereals marketed to U.S. children
are more than half sugar by weight
and many get only fair scores on nutritional
value, Consumer Reports said on Wednesday.
And some brands have more sugar and sodium
when formulated for the
U.S. market than the same brands have when
sold in other countries.
Why would they do that?
It costs more money to add more sugar.
Why are they doping American kids and not other
kids?
Are they putting addictive drugs in kid's food
to hook them for life?
Big Tobacco adds formaldahyde and ammonia to their cigarettes too hook

Palin's
Political Gibberish
Link
Excerpt:
"The main reason she is inadequate is her stunning
lack of knowledge about the issues that anyone
in her position should know about, most prominently
foreign policy. The few news anchors the
McCain team has allowed her to speak with - Gibson,
Hannity and Couric - could all clearly
dance circles around the wannabe Veep when it
comes to international politics. But Palin's also
alarmingly unskilled when it comes to a more
indigenous matter: speaking the English language.
Or, as I wouldn't be too surprised to hear her
put it, talking American.
The petrified McCain team has, wisely, barely
permitted Palin to speak in public. They are so
worried about her oratorical ineptitude, in fact,
that they successfully negotiated to limit the
amount of time she could be interrogated on a
single topic during last night's VP debate.
Now, each candidate will have just 90 seconds
to answer a question, followed by a
two-minute discussion period.
The problem is, sometimes America loves idiotic, cowboy candidates who
can't think.
How else could Reagan and Bush the Stupider get in the White House?

Bush's Sad
legacy
Link
Excerpt:
It would have been nice to let Bush's two terms
marinate a while before invoking Herbert Hoover and
James Buchanan from the cellar of worst presidents.
But then -- over the last two weeks -- he completed
the trilogy of national disasters that will be
with us for a generation or more. George Bush entered the White
House as a proponent of a more humble foreign
policy and a believer that government should get out of the
way at home. He leaves as someone with a trillion-dollar
war aimed at making people who've hated each
other for a thousand years become Rotary Club
freedom-lovers, and his own country close to bankruptcy
after government did get out of the way.
It's a Mount Rainier of shame and folly...Historians
will recall that in each of the major disasters on Bush's watch,
there were ample warnings -- from the intelligence
briefing that Osama bin Laden was determined to strike
a month before the lethal blow, to the projections
that Hurricane Katrina could drown a major American city,
to the expressed fears that letting Wall Street
regulate itself could be catastrophic...
And where was Bush when they told him doom was around the corner?

Subject: I just can't picture
Palin as president
I watched the VP debate and, who would have thought
Joe Biden would be the first one to tear up?
Neither side made any serious mistakes and both
were interesting to listen to. But the bottom line is
that Joe Biden seemed competent and having a
deep understanding of the issues.
Sarah Palin did an artful job of talking around
issues and questions that she clearly didn't understand,
but being the President of the United States
isn't the kind of job you can fake your way into.
George Bush has proved that. So even though Sarah
had some answers that I agree with,
the bottom line is - I just don't see her as
President Palin.

Bush and
Wall Street - After the Revolt
Link
Excerpt:
Conservatives are truly out to lunch. Their plan
featured suspending capital gains taxes (as if investors
would then rush to put their money in the banks'
toxic paper), and further deregulation, letting banks
hide the current value of their assets by suspending
mark-to-market rules. That actually made it into the
final bill, but it hardly would increase confidence
in Wall Street. Rather than making further compromises
with the conservatives who simply don't get it,
Democrats should put forth a plan that is far bolder and
that deals with the real problems.
I say we put out the fire, give the world a reason to think we've seen
the light,
and then President Obama can send a real economic stablization bill
to congress in February.
...but putting out the fire has to come first.
If we "break" Detroit and the housing industry, we may lose the Big
Three forever
and housing could go into the tank for a long, long time.

The Real
Great Depression
Another panic like 1873 is what we should be afraid of
Link
Excerpt:
As continental banks tumbled, British banks held
back their capital, unsure of which institutions were
most involved in the mortgage crisis. The cost
to borrow money from another bank - the interbank
lending rate - reached impossibly high rates.
This banking crisis hit the United States in the fall of 1873.
Railroad companies tumbled first. They had crafted
complex financial instruments that promised a fixed
return, though few understood the underlying
object that was guaranteed to investors in case of default.
(Answer: nothing). The bonds had sold well at
first, but they had tumbled after 1871 as investors began
to doubt their value, prices weakened, and many
railroads took on short-term bank loans to continue
laying track. Then, as short-term lending rates
skyrocketed across the Atlantic in 1873, the railroads
were in trouble. When the railroad financier
Jay Cooke proved unable to pay off his debts, the stock
market crashed in September, closing hundreds
of banks over the next three years. The panic
continued for more than four years in the United
States and for nearly six years in Europe.

House OK's
Senate Bailout Plan
Can they get Der Monkey to sign it?
Link
Excerpt:
The House approval of the government's $700
billion make that $850 billion
for the pork
the GOP added financial
rescue plan Friday gave stocks a brief lift, but overall failed to set
off
much euphoria in financial markets that are facing
the reality of a prolonged economic downturn.
Investors had been anxious for resolution on the
government's plan to buy up bad assets from banks
and other institutions to shore up the financial
industry and help resuscitate credit markets. Trading
across markets has been volatile throughout the
week based on investors' reading of whether the plan
would win approval; on Monday, the House's rejection
took Wall Street and Capitol Hill by surprise.
The Senate subsequently passed its sweetened version
of the plan that added one final round
of tax breaks
for the super-rich because those days are over and everybody knows it.

What if John McCain were a former president of
the Harvard Law Review?
What if Obama finished fifth from the bottom
of his graduating class?
What if McCain were still married to the first
woman he said "Till Death Do We Part" to?
What if Obama were the candidate who left his
first wife after she no longer measured up to his standards?
What if Michelle not only became addicted to pain
killers, but acquired them illegally
through her charitable organization? What if
Cindy McCain graduated from Harvard?
What if Obama were a member of the "Keating 5"?
What if McCain was a charismatic, eloquent speaker?
If these questions reflected reality, do you really
believe the election numbers would be as close as they are?
This is what racism does. It covers up, rationalizes
and minimizes positive qualities in one candidate
and emphasizes negative qualities in another
when there is a color difference.
