Excerpt: The prevailing Beltway wisdom has now ossified
that the problem with the health care debate is that those
hardened Leftist ideologues cling childishly
and petulantly to their little "public option" fetish and their refusal
to give it up is jeopardizing enactment of a
reform bill.
As always, the obedient servitude of Blue Dogs
and "centrists" to the industries that own Congress aren't
obstructionist at all. Somehow, the refusal
of Blue Dogs to vote for a plan with a "public option" isn't impeding
anything; there's no reason they should give
anything up, because they're just being moderate and "centrist."
As always, the way things should be done in Washington
is that the proper scorn should be heaped on
The Left until they're bullied into giving up
what they believe so that Things Can Get Done (i.e., so that
corporate dictates can be fulfilled).
"Yes, we know that you are a nice man, that
you want to work with the opposite side of the aisle. But there comes a time when you need
to drop that and move forward. We're saying to you, 'Be tough. Use everything that you've
got. Do what you have to do. And we have your back.'"

Earlier this year I wrote you and said that I
would give Obama a full year, that’s until Jan 20, 2010
to make substantial progress on health care.
Maybe the guy knows what he’s doing. He has advisors.
If he had simply tried to ram something through
without looking willing to compromise then he would
have lied about trying bipartisanship. As it
is, this looks like a rope-a-dope. Foreman’s chasing Ali all
over the ring, but he is exhausting himself and
showing everyone his true character: the whole country
is sitting on the edge of their seats, seeing
Chuck Grassley say he was being disingenuous and having
Sarah Palin invent death panels.
I’m still willing to give Obama until January.
If he doesn’t come through, I’ll start backing
someone else for 2012.

Bart,
Maybe, just maybe, someone who went in, thinking
they were going to see a big blockbuster,
mindless CGI-explosion porn, instead saw something
that actually made them think.
How we treat those who are "different" is strong
allegory for every nation, especially at
a time when we are talking about health care
for the poor and unwanted.
Maybe Jackson was hoping to trap some people into
thinking. I agree the trailer promised a bit
more of a thrill ride (and you got to admit the
battle suit was cool), but maybe some of the people
who watch only that should occasionally be made
to see something slightly deeper in meaning.
Still love the page, and if my new book sells
(still on unemployment),
I promise to make due on five or six since I
last donated.

Excerpt: The Obama administration is setting strict new
standards for treatment of terror suspects, as the Justice Department
launches a criminal probe of past interrogation
tactics during Der Monkey Fuhrer's fake war on terrorism.
A CIA report says CIA interrogators once threatened
to kill a 9-11 suspect's children and suggested another
would be forced to watch his mother sexually
assaulted...
Top Bush fairies said they were troubled by Attorney
General Eric Holder's decision to begin a new criminal probe,
which they said could hamper U.S. intelligence
efforts.
And Dick Cheney asserted that the CIA's torture
sqaud "saved lives and prevented terrorist attacks." Cheney said
those torturers "deserve our gratitude" and do
not deserve "to be the targets of political investigations or prosecutions."
He said that Holder's decision serve as a reminder
'if any were needed, of why so many Americans
have doubts about this administration's ability
to be responsible for our nation's security.'"
Excerpt: The debate over the "public option" in health
care has been dismaying in many ways. The most depressing aspect
for progressives has been the extent to which
opponents of greater choice in health care have gained traction simply
by repeating that the public option would be,
horrors, a government program.
Washington, it seems, is still ruled by Reaganism
- by an ideology that says government intervention is always bad,
and leaving the private sector to its own devices
is always good.
I hoped that the failure of Reaganism in practice
would kill it. It turns out, however, to be a zombie doctrine:
even though it should be dead, it keeps on coming...
The debate over the public option has been depressing
in its inanity. Opponents of the option - not just Republicans,
but Democrats like Senator Kent Conrad and Senator
Ben Nelson - have offered no coherent arguments against it.
Mr. Nelson has warned ominously that if the option
were available, Americans would choose it over private insurance
- which he treats as a self-evidently bad thing,
rather than as what should happen if the government plan was better
than what private insurers offer.

Excerpt: Howard Dean has emerged as Obama’s chief antagonist
from the left on healthcare reform, raising questions
over whether Obama made a mistake by snubbing
Dean for a position in his administration.
Dean’s strong advocacy for creating a broad government-run
health insurance program, known as the public option,
has become a headache for Obama while at the
same time giving liberals a powerful spokesman with national credibility.
Dean, who once declared himself a representative
of the "Democratic wing of the Democratic Party", has been traveling
the nation this summer offering his own views
on Obama’s healthcare proposal. His uncompromising stance is reminiscent
of his 2004 presidential campaign that took many
Democrats by surprise, and has begun to symbolize a rift between the
president and those activists who played a major
role in electing him.
Excerpt: Attorney General Eric Holder on Monday opened
a preliminary investigation into whether some CIA operatives
broke the law in their coercive interrogations
of suspected terrorists after 9/11 presenting Obama with the prospect
of a long, distracting battle over policies and
actions carried out under his predecessor.
Holder said he decided to establish what he called
a "preliminary review" after he conducted a thorough examination
of past reviews of the interrogations, including
an internal CIA investigation completed in 2004 by the CIA's inspector
general and separate reviews by Justice Department
internal affairs watchdogs and prosecutors.
He noted "that neither the opening of a preliminary
review nor, if evidence warrants it,
the commencement of a full investigation, means
that charges will necessarily follow."
That part I believe - the Democrats will
investigate and them say, "We found no
crimes," thereby whitewashing all the crimes and abuses
the sons of bitches put on us for eight years.
But the decision plunged the Obama administration
into the kind of controversy it most wanted to avoid -- a polarizing,
backward-looking fight over issues far removed
from the president's top priorities. And the furor is likely to be all
the
sharper and more distracting because it pits
the most liberal elements of Obama's base against the most unyielding
elements of the Republican Party.
Why is Holder going out of his way to say "expect
no charges to be filed?" Is Holder another Lee Hamilton?
Republicans start out with the idea, "We're
going to impeach the president" and then they look for crimes.
Democrats start out with the idea, "We'll
probably find no crimes," then let the guilty off the hook.
Bart,
Love the page. If I had the extra bucks, I'd
send a few your way.
Listen, the reason the democrats lose all the
time came to me a few weeks ago. Don't know if I'm crazy but...
1) We have two parties to give the illusion of
democracy. We get a choice, just not a good one.
2) The democrats lose because that is their role
in our national passion play. The moral lesson is "might makes right"
The repubs use this to win elections and get
people to vote against their own interests. The democrats represent the
idea
that playing fair is what we should do, but they
lose because: "might makes right"
How else can we explain that democrats represent
what should be, but they lose,
but at the same time they also vote nearly the
same way as the repubs.
Looking forward to your response.
I hope I'm wrong!

The biggest problem the Democrats have is they don't care about qwinning.
Republicans will walk thru fire to win, the Democrats will only win
if victory falls in their lap.
The Number One goal of the Democrats is to play fair.
Victory?
They don't have time for no damn victory.

Hi Bart, maybe it’s the socialist in me, but shouldn’t
EVERY corporation be taxed at least 10%?
WHY DO corporations get more favorable rates
than we the people? Does America hate its citizens??
On your page you showed Enron and most of the
others with a negative tax rate and get a better break
than the untaxed churches. GE and IBM look like
good guys by comparison.
I’ve had it with the socialism or corporate welfare
for corporations. Tax them all at a minimum of 10%
and while we are at it make all earnings subject
to the Social Security tax.
Steve in PA
Steve, corporations don't pay taxes, neither do
the super-rich.
Only the little people pay taxes.
Bart, why is Obama even talking to these repuke
shitheads?
For some reason, our president thinks he can reason
with rabid dogs.
At some point Obama needs to take the gloves off
and go LBJ on these bastards. If he has to start twisting arms
to do it, then good. Americans are dying as insurance
company profits continue to rise, and it has to stop.
If he’s got to threaten a few fence-sitting DLC
shitheads, then that’s what he has to do. First, strip them of any
committee power that they might have. Then, ratchet
it up a notch by telling them not only will he vigorously support
their opponents come election time, but that
he’ll see to it that their states are at the top of the list of places
to
warehouse high-level al-Qaeda prisoners and dumping
our nuclear waste, and at the bottom of the list when it
comes to everything from public works projects
to the distribution of Swine Flu vaccine.
And stop talking to the repukes...it's a complete
waste of time.
This is pissing me the fuck off.
Kisses...
