I am an old Republican. I am religious, yet not
a fanatic. I am a free-marketer; yet, I believe in the role
of the government as a fair evenhanded referee.
I am socially conservative; yet, I believe that my lesbian
niece and my gay grandchild should have the full
protection of the law and live as free Americans enjoying
every aspect of our society with no prejudices
and/or restrictions. Nowadays, my political and socio-economic
profile would make me a Marxist, not a Republican.
I grew up in an era where William F. Buckley
fought the John Birch society and kicked them out of the GOP.
I grew up with -- in fact voted for the first
time for -- Eisenhower. In 1956, he ran a campaign of dignity.
A campaign that acknowledged that there are certain
projects better suited to be handled by the government.
See, business thinks in the short term, as he
said. That's the imperative of the marketplace. I invest and I expect
that in a few quarters, I garner the fruits of
my investment. Government, on the other hand, has the luxury to wait
a few years, maybe decades, for a return on a
given investment. As a former businessman, I know that first hand.
Am I a Marxist for thinking that?...
I do not recognize myself in the Republican Party
anymore. I have the same ideological positions on most of
the issues that I had when I voted for Eisenhower,
Nixon, Reagan and George W. Bush in 2000. However, I just
cannot trust the reins of our government and
nation, of this formidably complicated and complex gigantic machine
that is the USA, to the amateurish leadership
of the Republican Party.
I have an idea for a trap: We spread the word thru Rethugs forums
that Obama is planning a government takeover of our electrical grid!
That's right - no more private electricity - it's all "socialist" electricity now.
And if Obama succeeds, next he's going to have the government take over
the Interstate Highway System.
Boy, if you think the roads are bad now, just wait till that "Muslin"
makes them "socialized" highways.
And if Obama succeeds, next he's going to have the government take over
the distribution of water.
Do you want "cookie cutter" water coming to your house that also -
gasp - goes to Black homes?

blames the media

The Vatican has been in a bubble for so long
that ordinary journalistic scrutiny feels like a smear.
I believe the media in general have treated the
Pope with appropriate respect, even as they raise
troubling questions about his lack of past action
against pedophile priests. When you carefully
examine stories like those in the Times, they
are carefully written and based on documents and
interviews. They don't conclude that then-Cardinal
Ratzinger looked the other way while abusive
priests were transferred or went unpunished;
the articles simply examine the circumstantial evidence,
including correspondence sent to his office.
These stories are not being driven by any animus
toward the Catholic Church or Pope Benedict.
But they are animated in part by a sense of revulsion
that priests who abused young boys, including
deaf boys, were either shipped off to other parishes
or allowed to remain in their posts. Rather than
express remorse for these horrifying lapses,
the church has adopted a blame-the-media strategy that
has backfired and perpetuated the story. These
news accounts are not "petty gossip"; they are deadly serious.
I knew if I lived long enough, I'd eventually read something from Kurtz
that wasn't super-stupid.
Who knew there were advantages to getting old?
