Subject: Just stopped shaking....
Bart,
This assassination attempt on Congresswoman Giffords was just
devastating - horribly shocking
and absolutely appalling.
Like you, I was around for the
assassinations of JFK, MLK, RFK. The times now are certainly
different but the feelings that arise, when once more an elected
representative is a victim of an
attempted assassination, take me back to those horrible days in
the 60’s.
I was sickened by the needless death
and destruction this madman caused.
I am trying to remain hopeful that Congresswoman Giffords
continues her fight for survival.
Most of us know very well where the threads of this tragedy began and
how all the dots can be connected.
That needs to be addressed and addressed now.
We cannot continue on this path. But
there are those who will deny any responsibility,
will try to turn this around to blame others, will even try to create a
new reality for themselves,
rather than deal with truth of this horrible action.
If the country does not wake up NOW –
then when will it???

Subject: Violence often starts with hate speech
It is no surprise to me that someone started shooting at Democrats like Congresswoman
Gabrielle Giffords when the Republicans openly advocated the use of "Second Amendment
Remedies" in their campaigns and referred to member of Congress as "domestic enemies".
This is a thinly veiled message that should Republicans lose the election at the ballot box
they should start killing members of Congress.
Hate speech might have had a short term political gain for Republicans in 2010 but there
is a long term price to pay. In my view those who would inflame people to violence bear
some of the responsibility for the results. The Republicans have to realize that when you
call out for domestic terrorism you get domestic terrorism.

We live in a country where we have a Supreme Court Justice - Antonin Scalia - who says that
the Constitution doesn't protect women and gays from discrimination. And we're not impeaching this guy?
What has this country come to that we allow justices on the highest court in the nation who don't
have enough of a grasp on reality that they don't understand that women and gays are people.
I think Scalia has more in common with the Taliban than he does with Americans.

Medical Update
I heard a doctor on NBC say the bullet entered Gifford from behind
the left ear and exited from her forehead, above the eye brow...
I'm just giving you that heads-up because, since they weren't saying,
I assumed it was a left-right, temple-to-temple trajectory.
Since she's responding to questions, it would appear the bullet
missed her "processor" but some "data storage" might've been lost.
I hope her recovery is rapid and complete.

Subject: Arizona Tragedy
Republicans will continue framing their platform in an emotional way since passions and emotions
rule the roost. Logic and reason, the tools of sane minded folks, liberals and sometimes democrats
are going to fall by the way side. You say "facts don't matter (to the right) " and you're right!
It's feelings that matter, and boy oh boy, feelings in the US with so much stress on people lately
with all these issues run high. There's no escaping.
Why do nutzoids like Palin, Rush and others continue to attact fans? Because they FAN passions.
Day in and day out. You and I know there's nothing but crap coming out the wrong end,
but for many people, the point at which they listened to the voice of reason has long passed.
People will put themselves at risk believing opinions that pass as facts.
The downside of this is, even in light of this heart rending tragedy is that people leading the
political discourse won't change their tune. I can imagine there's some Schadenfreude in all these
camps, and come Monday, someone is going to say, some kid in AZ was off his rocker and its
their own fault, they're lawmakers and what not, what are they doing mingling with people?!?
It will all be explained away in one way or another, and in a sick way justifying to themselves
and listeners that the nonsense is the truth and their lives hinge on their version of the "truth."
They won't accept any responsibility for their "leadership" and the effect they have.
