Subject: Arizona's "birther" law
The Arizona legislature has passed a new voting law aimed at Obama requiring presidential
candidates to prove they were born in America. I doubt Obama is going to have any trouble
doing that, but had this law been in effect in 2008 it would have caused more of a problem
for John McCain that Obama.
McCain was born in Panama.
Obama had never challenged McCain's qualifications to run for president because his father
was a navy admiral at the time working on the Panama Canal. But now that the question is law
he would have to prove he was US born. And he probably can't.
Thirteen other states are considering similar laws.
If McCain decided he wanted to run again he probably couldn't.
I think these legislatures should focus more on creating jobs that political tricks
and earn the voter's approval by doing a good job rather than focusing on political nonsense.

I'm pretty damn sure that Obama's people left the mike open on purpose.
He said everything he wanted to say about the Repubs, he got to act tough,
and the pitiful excuse that we have for a responsible media are worse than TMZ for scandal.
TMZ is exactly what it purports to be, the news media like to think of themselves as
high-minded and objective. But if they get a chance to do some panty sniffin', or catch
somebody who they think screwed up, they're all over it.
Obama played the press and therefore played the Repubs, just like the whoopin' he
put on Ryan an Cantor sitting in the front row of his speech last week.
However, talk's cheap. Let's see what Obama does.

There seems to be two Obamas

Candidate Obama ran on hope. President Obama runs on pragmatism. Those who have
expected more of the former have descended to cynicism upon seeing the latter.
What hasn't helped is the ground on which President Obama has chosen to fight. We have undergone
30 years of Reaganism now, long enough for us to have seen the effects: a wholesale shift of the tax burden
to the middle class and poor, and the mass accumulation of wealth in the hands of the rich; the long, slow
deterioration of the nation's physical plant, with bridges and runways and highways crumbling; and now the
concerted effort at both the state and national level to undo both LBJ's Great Society and FDR's New Deal.
But in every negotiation with his GOP opponents of late, Obama has begun by ceding ground.
There has never, not from day one, been a full-throated defense of the America that gave us collective
bargaining and the 40-hour work week, that gave us weekends and Social Security and Medicare and
Family and Medical Leave, that did away with the horrors of child labor, that built public schools that
were once the envy of the world--many things at which the current Republicans have been busy trying
to chip away. The Washington Post's Harold Meyerson has drolly noted that today's Republicans
want to repeal the 20th century.
That's true and our top defender is more into concessions than fighting.

Something I haven’t heard mentioned about the “controversy” surrounding Obama’s birth is this;
If one of your parents is a U.S. citizen, it doesn’t matter if you were born on Mars, you’re a U.S. citizen.
Unless someone’s willing to maintain that Obama’s mom, who I believe was a fifth-generation Kansan,
was also not an American citizen, this should be a dead goddamn point.

I had the pleasure of meeting her when she came through Customs at LAX,
about 20 years ago, and I was the shift supervisor that night.
She was a wonderful person, very kind and warm. She gave me an autograph,
and I arranged to help her exit the Customs area from a back door to avoid the paparazzi.
One of the nicest celebrities I ever met.
