But where is his attention to the homefront, where the economy is melting down and revolution is brewing? -- Ted Rall, angry with our president, Link Send e-mail to Bart The Progressive Alternative?
by Robert Reich Link President’s answers don’t nearly match up to the magnitude of the crisis. Without bold alternatives, Americans desperate for big solutions are attracted to bold crackpot ideas like Herman Cain’s “9-9-9” proposal, which would raise taxes on the poor and cut them for the rich. This is where the inchoate Occupy Wall Street movement could come in. What’s needed isn’t just big ideas. It’s people fulminating for them – making enough of a ruckus that the ideas can’t be ignored. They become part of the debate because the public demands it. The biggest thing the President has proposed is a plan to create 2 million jobs. But that’s not nearly big enough. I'm no economist but it seems that Obama isn't one, either. They say his first stimulus was much too small - so nothing happened but, we need to remember things could've gotten a whole lot worse without it. Some people think we should've let the banks fail - which is kinda crazy. Once Bush crashed everything, Obama had no choice but to bail them out. I also heard some talking heads saying Obama has no cred with the 99% because he chose Geithner and Summers - the very embodiment of the one percenters, when he could've picked people who were on the same side as the 99%. Our president has made so many mistakes. When is he going to start getting things right? Subject: Go easy on Obama Keep swinging dude. Just consider easing up on my President a bit. He has to keep the dammed cursed dems in line and that is an impossible task. Beats the alternative. I know, I know. But consider the alternatives. They really suck. Build us back up. George L George, I hear what you're saying - and I agree. I would like to write, "Obama wins again," but he's winning very few fights and he seems to be incapable of learning from his mistakes. The good news? He's likely to win another term because he's running against two-headed wild dogs. Since donations have all but crashed, I should probably avoid all touchy subjects. Having opinions on controversial issues can be very expensive. Send e-mail to Bart Shopping online?

Terror & the used car salesman Iran picked a dupe - so they're harmless Link Leave it to the US military-industrial complex to create sympathy for Iran. The recent allegation that Iran is behind a plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador on US soil has been met with considerable skepticism—even by the usually docile US corporate media. Not only are folks skeptical, but they’re also feeling bad for Iran, given the real possibility that Iran is the victim of character assassination. Why? Because the alleged plot doesn’t make any sense. Because the US establishment has high motivation to create reasons for attacking Iran. Because fabrications and false flag attack scenarios have been proposed or tried before—again and again—often with great success. First off, let it be said that the Iranian leadership is theoretically capable of anything, and that many regimes are. There’s a remote chance that this whole thing is real, notwithstanding how foolish a gambit it would be. The greater likelihood, however, is that this is something else. Some kind of deliberately conjured cassus belli. Maybe this is no big deal - maybe we should just treat this like a joke until Iran gets 20-25 nukes and then can take their shit the way we have to take shit from North Korea. Why prevent a problem when we can just wait for the first 3-4 nukes to explode? Send e-mail to Bart Better

What he is doing is trying to make it look as though he is actually doing something. Honestly, I would bet that there are some Republicans who see this for what it is, a pathetic attempt to make it look like he is relevant. There are people in this country who should be legitimately prosecuted, but of course will never be held accountable for their actions. Is anyone seriously surprised that the justice Department acts as though it were castrated and totally tone deaf. How many votes will Obama get from this lame move? By the way, by prosecuting marijuana distributors etc, they are not stepping on any corporate toes. Always, always follow the money. The Obama administration does not have the people's back. Would Hillary waste the people's money on this incredibly idiotic move? Doing this provides no jobs, lets no one renegotiate their mortgage, nor does it hold any Wall Street bankers accountable for stealing our money, manipulating the market and ruining the economy. Judy Judy, if Obama and Holder can kill poker and legal pot shops I believe they will consider their administration a great success. Send e-mail to Bart Did FBI go Rogue on Iran? by Lawrence Davidson consortiumnews.com The FBI’s approach to “terror prevention” relies on spinning crime scenarios so as to lure unsuspecting “terrorists” into a criminal trap. The recently announced arrest of the American-Iranian used car salesman turned drug peddler (who has a cousin employed by Iran’s Quds Force, the special operations unit of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards), falls neatly into this MO. The Justice Departmen talleges that Arbabsiar planned to assassinate the Saudi Arabian ambassador in Washington. In this case, the confidential source was a Drug Enforcement Agency operative, who is himself a convicted felon. According to Gareth Porter, the operative is heard on one of the FBI’s clandestine recording “inducing Arbabsiar to agree to the assassination of the Saudi ambassador.” That is entrapment and it is illegal. I fail to see why that matters. If Iran sent the guy money to kill an ambassador on US soil, why does it matter who thought of the murder plot? The real problem here is Obama is seen as very, very weak. He's not being taken seriously because he's lost so much power. His fellow Democrats don't mind embarrassing him, either. Democrats are openly showing contempt for their president - why? Because Obama gave them permission to revolt when he forgave Lieberman's backstabbing. Sometimes Obama seems like a mistake machine, grinding out one after another. Send e-mail to Bart We Have the Right to Protest ...so why are the police arresting them? Link In cities and towns across the country, 1,500 American citizens have been put in cuffs in the first month of the Occupy Wall Street movement. While a small handful of them have been charged with various acts of mayhem, the vast majority were peacefully demonstrating. They were arrested for not complying with orders to disperse, or for refusing to tear down the encampments that have come to symbolize the movement. We have a right to peacefully assemble and protest in this country, so what gives? On its face, “occupying” public space should be guaranteed under the First Amendment. Too bad there are no Democratic lawyers in America. Too bad they can't go to a judge and get an order barring the cops from arresting peaceful people. Remember the Bush bastards f-ing arrested people with anti-Bush t-shirts? Why don't the Democrats fight back? Why can't the Democrats think? Send e-mail to Bart Subject: extra judicial You can't put this under extra judicial. As far as I know, it has always been legal in this country to defend your life, the life of your family and even the lives of others. As a result, there is nothing extra judicial about that. Why is Harv trying to cloud the real issue here? The real issue is can the US government go out and kill someone who they think is a bad guy (whether he is in the US or anywhere else in the world) without showing at least a modicum of proof to an independent body? Personally, I was very upset knowing Dick Cheney sent out death squads to kill anyone he pleased and am not too pleased that Obama is doing the same thing. Dave in Illinois Dave, thanks for that. I'm OK with Obama killing the top-ranking plane bomber on the planet. Send e-mail to Bart Check out the news and toons at

How does anyone survive this mess? Link Students are borrowing extraordinary amounts of money through federal loan programs, putting a huge burden on the backs of young people looking for jobs and trying to start careers. Student loans taken out last year crossed the $100 billion mark for the first time and total loans will exceed $1 trillion for the first time this year. Americans now owe more on student loans than on credit cards, reports the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. So what happens when you graduate with $200K in student loans and you can't even get a job flipping burgers at McDonalds? Do European countries charge their students to attend college? I think a college education is free in Europe, but not in the good-old USA. Is it unAmerican to say their system might be better? They say petrol in Europe costs up to $8 a gallon, but they get free health care and they get free education. We could have a system like that, but the GOP says "that's socialism." And we'd all rather be broke, in debt or dead than commit "socialism." Send e-mail to Bart Subject: Cain's 9-9-9 plan is really 9-9-9-0
Herman Cain has released a new tax plan that he calls the 9-9-9 plan. 9 percent federal income tax, 9 percent corporate tax, and a 9 percent national sales tax. But his plan is really a 9-9-9-0 plan because under his plan the capital gains tax drops to 0. Capital gains is how the top 1% - the super rich - make their money. His plan is a huge tax cut for the rich and a huge tax increase for the rest of us. The 9% sales tax is a tax increase over the current sales tax. So here in California the sales tax would be 18%, not 9%. The 9% income tax is a flat tax with no deductions which is a huge increase for the lower middle class. And corporations which now control government and the super rich get a tax rate cut from 36% to 9%. And - the plan won't being in as much revenue as the current tax system so the deficit will skyrocket. Cains 9-9-9 plan is just an election gimmick to try to trick people into voting for a system that will only empower the rich to take more from the rest of us.
